Routing.

What's the weather like across I-40 in December? From AZ to SC?

Good chance for snow in AZ from Williams to Winslow at 6,500' elevation but the plows are out at the first sign of snow
I wics someone would finance a trip back east for me. I'd have to stop in Leadville and have Brian at BTS work his magic on my F-250. At 224K the stock tranny could use some TLC.

I head up near there a few times a year....actually heading from Charleston up near Sylva and Robbinsville area to do some camping and wheeling this weekend. Lows in 30s...ought to be nice.

That rock slide on 40 is only thing you might have issues with...rest should be good still.

As far as carrying....have you checked into New Hampshire and Utah....I have not looked back but I know I can get them as SC CCW holder and opens up nearly every state around.

Even if you cant carry in SC...you can have your fully loaded weapon in any glove box or console in your vehicle...without it being locked. So while not on your person you can have it loaded and ready for use in glove box, center console or any other similar closing storage area without need of permit.

This past Summer I drove from Charleston to Ouray Colorado....great trip. 4 days out was comfortable with lots of free time. 3 days back was a little tight but not unbearable...even had time to stop in Dodge City. Smile

I volunteer to put you up for the night if you take I70 across Ohio, coming or going.

Warm bed and grub for you and yours. Fenced yard too for the critters.

My family & I are used to traveling the Alcan. This is about the same distance, except on paved highways going through civilization. This trip really should be a piece of cake. Still...I like to plan things as much as possible.

We're on the lookout for places to stay, looking for relatives and friends who may be along the route. Hotels aren't always easy to find with 2 large dogs...who are very protective.

Another reason for bringing the truck...dogs can sleep in the back while we snooze in a hotel.

We won't be in a HUGE hurry to make this trip...so probably going to allow for 4 days. If it takes 5...that's fine. We're going to plan on this trip being 3 weeks long.

Any plans for a sigforum Christmas party in Georgia?

Thank you. I don't know if we're going that way yet...but I DEFINITELY appreciate the offer!

Odds of snow and road closure are virtually the same either route.

I've done the NE-I-80 route - mind numbing, but you have some civilization along the way. Can't speak for the KS routing.

Good Luck and drive safe.

Yes it is. Which is why I'm looking into taking another route! Big Grin

It might even be worth an extra 500 miles/ half a day of driving...to go through some states I've not driven through before.

I really wish I had an IFR airplane to make this trip in...

as for the I 70 route once you get out of the mountains it will MOST LIKELY be clear. There usually isn't a lot of snow but there is always a chance of a snow storm blowing up over the plains.

There isn't much through Kansas till you get near Kansas City.

The problems that I have encountered there are massive pile ups.
Partly due to the wicked black ice and the sun glare.
I was there when a few years in a row, accidents of 15+ cars along with the semi-trucks seemed to be the norm.
I've been over most of the passes you've mentioned and yes, every bit as brutal at times.
Other times though, absolutely clear sailing.
If you've got an in with Mother Nature, ask for nice weather. That would be my advice. Big Grin
Whatever you do, just be safe.

All depends on the weather both Flagstaff and Albuquerque can be gorgeous and sunny that time of year or be under snow. My advice is have a couple of routes planned, keep checking the weather and take the route that has the better weather.

I drive these routes all the time as an OTR trucker. As for weather, you must look at the forecast a few days early, and make your decision then. Some of the worst, most dangerous ice I've ever been in was in OK on I40, so there's no telling.

I80 across WY can be more difficult in bad weather than I70 from Grand Jct to Denver. I80 is less hilly, but has more severe weather.

The shortest route from Salem is OR126, US20, US95,I84,I80,Hwy2 in Lincoln to Nebraska City, I29, I70, I64, I57, I24, I40, I26. That's the most fuel saving route, with less hard, long hills and the fewest large cities.

If you want to go a southern route, from SLC go south on I15 to US191, south to I70, south again on 191 towards Monticello, UT, left onto 491 (old Hwy 666) to Cortez, CO, on to Shiprock, NM. Either continue south on 491/666, or east on 64 to Broomfield. East on US550 (great road, like interstate) to Albuquerque, east on I40.

If you wish to get even further south from there, take US287 from Amarillo to Ft Worth.

Good luck on your trip. Drive safely.

I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

OK...now that's some really good info.

Lemme throw this in there also, hills don't bother me too much, but curves are a PITA, and they usually come with hills.

I plan to set the cruise control on my diesel, and plug along at 55mph regardless of higher speed limits. Of course...weather will ultimately dictate speed....but as pointed out in your post, a non-hilly, less populated route is more efficient sometimes than a more direct one.

I'm going to plug that route in...and see how it goes.

191 south to I40 is good road, better weather-wise than the mountain passes in Oregon.

If you're really worried about weather, it's not much longer to go I5 south, CA99 to CA58 over Tehachapi grade to Barstow.

If you take this route, you will pass 2 miles from me. There is a pretty bad construction project going on I57 right now. I don't know how bad it will be in Dec though. It's not really long right now, but it is narrow.

AKSD, I've got to go load now in LA for El Paso, so I've got to go now. I'll check back in tonight and see if you have any questions about the route you choose.

Even though I do it for a living, I still enjoy a good road trip. Smile

Top off your fuel in Cortez. Most of 491 is on the reservation and gas stations can be hit or miss as far as being open or even having fuel. I have no idea what diesel availability would be on the res. You can also see some really "interesting" people in the reservation gas stations...

Avoid Kansas. That place is full of fuck all. If you decide on I-90 through SD or MN on the way to Des Moines, that too can suck in winter, although they do a fair job of keeping it open and it's pretty good pavement once you get east river side.
