Flew with a First Officer that tried the Big Texan challenge. He didn't even come close...

Give me a 12 oz. sirloin cooked to perfection any day of the week. All these challenges with a YUGE steak are pointless...you can't enjoy it. I want to SAVOR that flavor... Cool

Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo

My dad used to tell a story about some (massive) guys he used to work with back in the '80s. I think it may have been in Amarillo, but they were at this all you can eat Steak house, at some point the manager comes out and tells them "If you leave now, it's free"

"Anybody ever had a go at the Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillio? 72 oz steak, cooked your way, baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, in an hour?"

....I have a very close blood relative who completed the Texas steak about 12-15 years ago in his enthusiastic youth.

He said while the steak 'n fixings was first class, about half-way thru he realized it WAS absurd to actually eat that much, and he was cured of ever wanting to mount to the challenge again.

He did stop back on the way thru a few years later and claims to have found his name plaque screwed to the bar or some such story.

Just curious.

The quality of beef in Europe really isn't on par with the US (at least from my experience in France, Spain, Switzerland). Even my french wife and my French in-laws agree that their beef isn't as good as the beef we get in the US.

The steak I had wasn't juicy or tender like a well marbled steak would be. And I don't think the cooking method, whatever it was, did it any favors either.

I agree. However, I also found the beef in Argentina, and Chile to be way better than in the US. The best burger I ever had was in an Irish pub in Santiago.

I’ve eaten at the Big Texan in Amarillo. However Ive always ordered a normal sized 10 or 12 ounce ribeye or sirloin. Those were decent but not great.

I’ve seen people try to eat their big famous steak offering and it’s disgusting. There’s a time limit so people eat like animals, just snarfing it down. That’ll ruin your appetite right there.

I concur and so do my French in laws. They cover up some with exquisite sauces, but only so far.

My wife’s sister and brother in law, with another couple from the village, visited years ago. I introduced them to prime rib at Pebble Beach Golf Club, and neither of them have been the same since.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

When I went there they had a plaque for a guy from Alaska that had eaten TWO of the 72oz steaks.

The new record is a Woman who has Eaten THREE of the 72oz steaks in less than one Hour!!!!

And she only weighs 120lbs!

That is sick.

I attempted this challenge in the early 90s, and I lost. I can eat a lot of steak, but not that much.

Sounds more like torture to me. Why should I pay for the privilege even?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." A Mexican restaurant in the same city as Les Baer offers a 6 pound steak burrito, rice, beans, and a 24 oz. draft beer in less than 30 minutes.

http://the-blueiguana.com/wanna-iguana/

I may try it one of these days, but I need a pal for encouragement.

Simplest explanation as per the quality of beef is this:

Since there are no large properties in Europe, basically noone owns enough land for the cattle to roam, excercise and pasture naturally. They're artificially fed and artificially bred.

Also, in this context, no particular breed is optimal for meat production. They have plenty for milking but none for beef, the best you can hope is a breed that will be a compromise between both ends.

As a result, beef is quite tasteless and needs to be either overcooked, boiled or flame roasted only on the surface. This last method gives you something that you can chew forever. Overcooked is same as a rubber vulcanized tyre.

When I moved to Belgium, my argentine dog refused to eat belgian beef, lucky for him we could get argentinian impoted meat. When we ran out he was in a foul mood for days...

When in England I was taken to an old pub which was originally built in the 1200s and was primarily patronized by the locals.
Being an American, they decided to give me an oversized portion of steak.
It was without a doubt the toughest, most tasteless portion of boiled gristle I ever had.

In fairness, one of the best burgers I've ever had was at a small 'Texas' pub over there.

Trust me, NOTHING tastes like North American beef.

My cousin raises Charolais cattle in SE Ontario, all Triple A stuff. We stuff ourselves when we are over, and live off the memories for the rest of the year.
