Caught these on our surveillance system the other night. The system has caught them before, but not this close.

We have those, too. Next door neighbour spent a goodly amount of time, last summer, evicting and re-evicting one from under his shed. They used to make home under our's, until we had a new shed built and I surrounded it with packed crushed stone--which they seem to dislike for digging.

My wife keeps trying to convince me to terminate the resident groundhog--with prejudice. But, beside the fact discharging a firearm within township limits is verboten, there are homes "downrange." They're maybe as much as 1,000 ft. off, through very dense woods and brush, and I'd only use a 22, but, still...

I kinda miss seeing raccoons, used to be lots of them here but rabies seems to have wiped them out.

Back not long before I retired my wife spotted one in our yard in the middle of the day. Called a next door neighbour over. He called a friend, who came over, verified probable rabies, and dispatched it--township ordinances be damned. (Neither they nor the county would send anybody.)

Our small critter population (racoons, groundhogs, bunnies, roaming cats) waxes and wanes, depending upon whether the coyotes are about.

Coons.

Sometimes they make a strange bird-like chirping sound. Pretty freaky if you never heard it before.

About 15-20 years back hunters, actually their damn barking dogs, treeing raccoons often kept me up at night. Noticed a big female that nested in a pine tree with her little ones one year and man were they cute!

Unfortunately some idiots in eastern WV or western VA decided to relocate raccoons from Florida and among them was at least one with rabies and rabies has spread westward through the raccoon population. Some agency, I suppose DNR, is dropping rabies vaccine bait to try to get it under control. They decided the Ohio River is somewhat of a natural barrier so they started there and have been working east. We'll see.

Live trap, baited with canteloupe chunks. use the rind to smear over the outside of the trap to kill your scent. Woodchucks cannot resist it. Once trapped, remove to safe area and either relocate or terminate. They are destructive bastards. One chuck can move 150lbs of dirt a day. Foundations are at their mercy. if you get a family under your property, it's a nightmare.

Yup, racoons. A few years back on a very cold winter night I got up about 3 AM to go to the kitchen and have a cup of coffee. I heard all kinds of rattling and clattering in my attached garage and opened the door to see what was the matter. (Sounds kind of like "It Was The Night Before Christmas" doesn't it?)

And what to my wandering eyes did appear, was one big assed raccoon siting on the seat of my Honda CV500 motorcycle! Eek
