I'm disappointed in the sentences she and the husband received. Not much more than the other defendants that admitted their sins immediately and took their punishment.
These two have cost the taxpayers a tremendous amount in legal/court costs, wasted time, and reinforced the idea that money can often get you a different version of justice.
Hopefully this would diminish their future job prospects but it's probably going to be played as some sort of victim-hood in their circles.

The punishment needs to be true punishment and sitting at home, like you said, isn't punishement for them but just another luxurious day of self confinement they're supposed to be under anyway. So yes, actual prison time, wearing the green PJs, would be appropriate for them.

$500,000.00 in bribe money (lost and no degree), plus $400,000.00 in fines? That's almost a million dollars down the drain for the spoiled brats. Any time in custody (including home arrest) for this kind of crime is frosting on the cake.

While I'm glad to see them receive this kind of punishment, a big part of me is still concerned that the offender who steals the old Honda or Toyota owned by "Joe Citizen" (who can only afford to pay for liability insurance, and has put every cent he has into personal transportation) gets off with straight probation, leaving "Joe" to hitch a ride with friends or take a bus (for how long?) in order to save up for another clunker. The offender might be ordered to pay restitution, but typically they claim to be impoverished, so there's no practical way for Joe to be compensated for a loss that (to him) is very substantial.

Maybe I'm cynical, but I've dealt with a lot of victims like these and it's shameful that they're treated like dirt, while the guy who's $100k MBZ or Porsche (fully insured for theft) is treated much better. High dollar car thieves sometimes get actual time in prison, if the $$$$ add up. In the wonderful socialist state of California, former governor "Arnold" even wanted to make vehicle theft punishable as a misdemeanor, if it's value was below a certain amount.

I always thought this should have been handled as a civil suit by the colleges against the parents. Other than the tax fraud implications, I don't see why this is a federal crime, and if it is, the statutes they're charging them under need to be rewritten and narrowed.

I don’t know how you concluded I meant that. I don’t resent or detest wealthy people. I admire those who became wealthy through hard work, ideas, inventions, education, entrepreneurship, etc.

What I mean is that I resent those who behave and act in a way that they they behave, act, and believe can get away with things because they are wealthy, and believe the rules don’t apply to them.

I would add to this whatever big $$ they are paying to their lawyers, too. And their therapists, and their (fill in the blank)….

This entire thing has been a waste of time. There are way more important things to worry about than this. What about athletes who are barely literate getting degrees just because they can play a sport well, just to name one.
This is the sort of thing that has been going on for decades and longer. Wealthy elite (or supposed elites) give colleges huge amounts of money to get preferential treatment and often end up with their name on buildings etc. I despise the fake outrage by these colleges and officials.

Not likely. They're non-violent white collar criminals. Very low security risk. They'd be sent to some low security federal correctional facility (note I didn't say penitentiary) or camp. Not pleasant, but not the gladiatorial games the USP's can be. In east coast terms it would be someplace like Allanwood or Otisville for the husband. I'm sure there's the equivalent in CA.

I'm not, by writing this, excusing their behavior. These people are wealthy, self-entitled and consider themselves "Elite". That said, they were overcharged. Doing jail time for lying on an application to attend college is disproportionate, cruel, and unusual. The prosecutors added on additional charges in an effort to intimidate them to plead guilty. What they did was wrong but sending them to jail for this isn't, in my mind, the right level of punishment.
