Rising Numbers Show Tim Tebow a Real MLB Prospect

by Robert J. Marlow 28 Jul 2017
Former NFL quarterback and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow, continues to impress at the New York Mets Single A minor league affiliate the St. Lucie Mets.

In his first 29 games, the 29-year-old fan favorite owns a solid .302 batting average, which includes four home runs, five doubles, and one triple. On top of that, he knocked in 16 runs and enjoys a super OPS (on base + slugging) percentage of .885.

Two weeks ago Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said that the University of Florida legend would not be included in the varsity’s expanded roster come Sept. 1. But, that pronouncement may have been premature given Tebow’s latest achievements in the batter’s box.

Wednesday night Tebow collected three hits in five at-bats, showing once again that the struggling New York Mets might reconsider keeping him in St. Lucie for the remainder of the season.

Mike Vaccaro writing at the New York Post suggests that it’s probably better for Tebow’s development to hang in the minors this year. “It would behoove both the Mets and Tebow to proceed accordingly. Under no circumstance would a player—even one enjoying a breakout year—make the jump from Port. St. Lucie to Flushing. To do that to Tebow would only exacerbate the notion he’s a freak show.”

However, Vaccaro points out that considering Tebow’s St. Lucie performance, “there will be 95 percent less snickering if Tebow starts next year at Double-A Binghamton, and even less if he hits his way to Triple-A Las Vegas. And then…”

Regardless, if the minor leagues most famous player gets brought up to “The Show” this year or not, Tebow proved wrong naysayers that consider him a promotional gimmick to increase ticket sales. Although he still has a long way to go, Tebow deserves to be taken seriously as a legitimate major league prospect.

How Tim Tebow became the greatest value in minor league baseball

Tim Tebow contributed to the greatest rise in minor league baseball attendance in 23 years.

That number is quite appropriate because only one man, Michael Jordan, has done more for minor league baseball crowds than Tebow did this year. And Jordan -- who wore No. 23 for the NBA's Chicago Bulls -- had the benefit of playing Double-A with bigger ballparks to fill.

Thanks to Jordan, the Birmingham Barons' 1994 season attendance of 467,868 fans, with an average of 6,884 fans per game, still stands as a franchise and league record. Although Tebow's popularity didn't fill that many seats, the impact of the former NFL quarterback is undeniable.

Tebow's biggest impact was drawing fans to games. Statwise, it's fair to say he has significant room for improvement, but did provide notable moments.

The Columbia Fireflies, the Class A team Tebow played for through June 28, saw their attendance increase by nearly 54,000 fans, a 21 percent rise from 2016. The second team Tebow played for, the St. Lucie Mets of advanced Class A, saw attendance rise by 35,803 fans, up 37 percent from last year.

And that's just the beginning.

On the road, Tebow's Fireflies drew a crowd, too: to be exact, 2,591 more fans than the home teams averaged against other opponents. Baseball America calculated that Tebow was worth nearly $1.6 million in additional tickets, parking, concessions and other revenue for the rest of the South Atlantic League.

For the owners of the Fireflies, Tebow was the greatest value in all of sports. The New York Mets paid his salary -- $10,000 for the season -- and the Fireflies reaped the benefits, including merchandise revenue for what figures to be one of the 20 highest-selling clubs in the minors.

At most venues, Tebow went down the line and signed every autograph opportunity until he was finished.

Although Tebow hit just .226 with eight home runs and 52 RBIs, there were highlights on the field, including a home run in his first at-bat after he moved from Columbia to St. Lucie and an unforgettable moment when Tebow reached through the netting while in the on-deck circle to shake hands with an autistic boy during a July 29 game in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tebow then walked to the plate and hit a three-run home run in front of one of the many crowds packed in to see the former Heisman-winning quarterback take his shot at baseball.

Thanks,

Sap

Tim Tebow invited to Mets major-league spring training camp

http://www.al.com/sports/index...ed_to_mets_majo.html

The New York Mets have invited former Florida and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow to their major league spring training camp, the club announced Friday.

Tebow, 30, spent the 2017 season playing in the Mets' minor-league system, posting a .226/.311/.336 slash line with eight home runs and 52 RBIs between the Low-A and High-A levels. It was his first attempt to play competitive baseball since his junior year of high school, the spring of 2004.

Teams do not typically invite players of Tebow's caliber to big-league camp, but the Mets no doubt eye the former football star's ticket-sales potential. The two clubs he played for in 2017, the Columbia (S.C.) Fireflies and the St. Lucie (Fla.) Mets, set various attendance records during Tebow's tenure with those teams.

Tebow, a left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder, participated in the Arizona Fall League in 2016, but did not do so this past year. Following the end of the 2017 season, he returned to work as an analyst for the SEC Network.

Tebow won the Heisman Trophy at Florida in 2007, and helped the Gators to national championships in 2006 and 2008. He later spent three seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets, but failed to catch on with the New England Patriots in 2013 and Philadelphia Eagles in 2015.
