How does this make any kind of sense? Only three of the original 24 women stuck with the program but they are going to design submarines to accommodate them.

The U.S. Navy is redesigning the interior of its newest submarines to accommodate the needs of female crew members.

General Dynamics Electric Boat, the primary contractor for Navy submarines, told the Associated Press they will add more doors and bathrooms to accommodate separate sleeping quarters for both genders. The contractor also said the current design of overhead valves were designed with male strength in mind, so they will be changed to make them easier to turn.

“We have a clean sheet of paper, so from the ground up, we’ll optimize for both men and women,” General Dynamics executive Brian Wilson told the AP. Some of the changes also include adding steps for bunk beds and laundry machines for shorter female crew members. The newest submarine with these features won’t be delivered until 2021.

The Navy first opened submarines to female officers in 2012 and added female crew members in 2014. The submarine program has had some trouble retaining female enlisted submarine crew members. Only three of the original 24 female crew members who signed up for submarine service stayed in the program.

“I would probably expect that most of the women are going to get out,” a female naval officer told Navy Times in 2015. “I don’t know exactly what everyone’s personal reasons are for it, but I think a lot of it has to do with co-location.”

What is more important to the military: military effectiveness or PC?

So, in summary, women have shown to be incapable at cutting it as sub mariners, but the US is going to spend millions if not billions redesigning subs to accommodate a very small, diminishing handful of women, all for PC purposes. And I'd bet, truth be known, those three women still serving in this role don't want to be treated any different than the men.

More of the stupid on steroids approach to spending US tax dollars.

That only makes sense.
Women are in the Navy to stay.... sorry if you don't like it.

My daughter graduated from USNA in 2011. At the time of her service selection I asked her if she would be interested in being among the first class of female sub officers. She said "No way!" primarily for this reason. Smart girl.
Still, once you have the Naval Academy with 22% or so female officer candidates you can't exactly exclude them from this service.

Slight thread drift:
They shouldn't try to force the women to be the same as the men. It's OK to let them be feminine...
For example, let them continue to wear the female headgear (below).
The wide headgear worn by the men looks silly on women.

The military takes its orders from elected officials. As much as I'd love to rail against PC generals, they are that way because our civilian masters have only approved promotions for GOs who fit their mold. I know you know this HD, I'm equally frustrated with the PC > mission mindset. I just don't know what will make it change.

You are right - I am railing against the wrong org (US govt vs Navy).

I don't want to spend money in retrofit situations but if it is a clean sheet design I think that is just being smart.

I want the best sailors in the subs. I don't care if they are boys or girls.

No, no, don't let logic, and common sense, get in the way of some old fashioned emotional ranting.

My boss is an ex sub guy. He rants about killing the culture of the crew.

I tell him the new crews will develop new cultures. It's what happens.

If it is a matter of brute strength that is one thing but so much of today's world is automated...

Well, we've been going downhill for 100 years...
First the 16th and 17th Amendments and the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913 and then...
Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote.

Women vote in greater numbers for a bigger social "safety net". They've been disproportionately voting Democrat for a long time. Our drift towards socialism coincides with women voting.

OK, what is all of that supposed to mean?

Confined spaces for long durations. If it will make you feel better, just make sure only females are assigned to duty on the boats.

Confined spaces for long durations. Get it?

Free tampons for the entire crew as well? I hate to say this, but it may have been best for me to quit ROTC in college (with scholarship) and go into business. Things are so wacky now and I have a hard time not speaking my mind.

I totally get it... and I'm glad my daughter gets it too. She wanted nothing to do with it.

BTW I was opposed to opening the submarine service up to women back in 2010 when it was debated.
Still, once you have allowed them in, you have to try to accommodate them. I would personally be fine with going back to an all male service for submarines.... but once that decision was made they now have to be accommodated. This is about adding steps for bunk beds and laundry machines for shorter female crew members.

No one seems to be complaining about the female officer who launched the missiles on Syria the other day.
