A lot depends on the door design. What kind of doors are they ang how do they open?

put one end up under the door knob and the other end 12 inches from the door , on the floor

Are these French style doors? A picture would be helpful.

If the doors themselves are flimsy there is really much that will keep them "secure"

That is a good point that I forgot to mention we are not so much trying to secure the doors as we are trying to get a visual I'm some type of device that would indicate whether the door has been opened or closed I would like to just take some wooden secure the door to the frame but I do not think the landlord will allow her to alter the doors like that a chain loop is an excellent idea

Check state law. Many states require landlords to have deadbolts installed on all exterior doors.

Does the loft have its own door? If so, secure that one. If the downstairs doors also serve businesses, I don't see how the roomer upstairs would even be allowed to "secure" them--that is the role of the businesses and they wouldn't want her to be able to lock out their customers.

If all that is needed is a warning that a door has been opened, could you just use a motion sensor aimed at them from upstairs?

Door open or closed = stick-on wireless contact with alarm panel. Can usually be configured to alarm or just give visual indication.

Assuming the doors open inward:
They make door stops that can be jacked up to increase the tension and better resist being opened. They can cause damage if hit too hard.

If you're looking for something to keep someone from opening the door, but can't technically keep them out, as well as know if it was opened - a regular door stop will likely do the trick. Someone can still push through it and the stopper would be left out away from the door. Most honest people wouldn't keep going once they hit resistance.

If they open out:
Something as simple as a child cabinet lock around the handles would be a similar deterrent. Can still be forced open, but will keep the honest out.
