Can someone give me the straight dope on these two states?

Am i correct in understanding that WI is GTG for all NFA items via normal channels? But WI is one of only two fucking states that does not allow carry in any way, shape, or form?

And IA is not a shall-issue state? How easy is it to get permits? And on the NFA front, IA only allows ownership of NFA items if you're a C3 SOT?

Is this correct?

I think open carry is good to go in Wisconsin. Let me see if I can find some links.

Another good article:

It looks pretty onerous staying in compliance.

Last I heard in WI, although it is legal, the police publicly stated that they WILL draw down on you and put you on the ground if they see you wearing a gun. Jack-asses.

Sounds like they are trying to make someone rich.

Regarding the IA questions:

-Each county (there are 99 of them) differs between shall issue, may issue, and won't issue. If you have a residence in a shall issue county, your CCW is good throughout the state (lawyers correct me please if I'm off). I used to live in Polk county, got my CCW from the county sheriff's office after passing the course offered at a local Isaak Walton League, and could carry in authorized areas (not on school grounds, gov buildings, etc) in restricted counties.

-IA is not a Class III/NFA state to the general public. SOT dealers can get the good stuff, but transferables, SBS, SBR, DD, and suppressors are out for the average citizen.

Creeping death nailed it. Much more CCW info is here:

Is there a particular county you're considering? The www site has a map showing county policy by red (no issue) yellow (may issue), or green (essentially shall issue).

Specific counties that i know of? No, just two of the jobs i'm applying for for next year are in IA and WI, one at Grinnell and another at UW-Madison.

I didn't realize that IA would be as restrictive as it is on guns. Sounds almost more like IL than anything else...but i guess MO also doesn't like NFA stuff. My image of the political climate for guns in the mid-west is just mistaken, i guess.

Thayer: that was my first stop. Wink

I knew WI was a no-go, for the most part, but didn't look too deeply into the intricacies of what "may issue" implies in IA.

That and i've found lots of unclear stuff about NFA ownership for WI.

When I feel bad about the IA gun laws, I only have to look north (WI) and east (IL) to remind myself it could be far worse. I'm in a shall issue county, and being a reserve LEO helps.

Grinnell is in Poweshek County, and that's green on this map:

MO has really come around on most NFA items.

Madison is heavily occupied territory, way behind enemy lines. Besides, you have to go through IL to get back to PA in either case.

That was the liberal Milwaukee douchebag police chief who made that statement. It's going to vary from town-to-town, but in some places you do stand a good chance of being harrassed by law enforcement (even though it is legal to open carry). Some towns/cities were charging people with "disorderly conduct" for open carrying, until the attorney general issued a statement against it.

The latest push in Wisconsin is an attempt to cut a deal on concealed carry. Some of the Dems want to pass a concealed carry law in exchange for requiring background checks for all sales (no more private sales allowed). I hope they don't take the deal; it's not worth it. Just wait until the legislature changes hands and try to pass concealed carry then (on it's own, without giving anything up in exchange).

MO is good to go on all NFA items, the funky thing is they consider an suppressor a curio so you must have at minimum a C&R ffl to obtain a suppressor. I haven't a clue if you must maintain it once you transfer your suppressor though?
