RadioShack's parent company, General Wireless Operations, has filed for bankruptcy. It's the second time in two years Radio Shack has been the subject of a Chapter 11 filing.

"For a number of reasons, most notably the surprisingly poor performance of mobility sales, especially over recent months, we have concluded that the Chapter 11 process represents the best path forward for the company," said Dene Rogers, RadioShack's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We will continue to work with our advisors and stakeholders to preserve as many jobs as possible while maximizing value for our creditors."

Radio Shack will close 200 stores and is "evaluating options" for its remaining 1,300 locations.

"(Radio Shack) and its advisors are currently exploring all available strategic alternatives to maximize value for creditors, including the possibility of keeping stores open on an ongoing basis," Radio Shack said in a release announcing the bankruptcy filing.

Fort Worth,Texas-based Radio Shack last sought bankruptcy protection in 2015, selling 1,500 of its stores to General Wireless. Since that time it has added "stores within stores" for Sprint products.

In a separate statement, Sprint said its agreement with Radio Shack was designed to protect it in the event of another bankruptcy. As such, several hundred Radio Shack stores will be converted into Sprint-branded stores.

"We will redeploy to other Sprint stores assets such as signage, displays and inventory currently at RadioShack locations which are closing," Sprint said in its statement, adding existing Sprint employees will transfer to those stores.

Radio Shack has not confirmed which stores will be closed.

In its filing, General Wireless listed assets and liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million.

When I was younger Radio Shack used to be one of the best places to find cool stuff. I built one of their short wave radio kits.
Had that for 20 years. They had excellent stereo equipment. All kinds of electronic parts etc.
Now all they are is a cellphone store. Just what the world needs, another place to buy a stupid cell phone.

They still have 1,300 locations?!

Unfortunately there will be more named brand retailers in the queue later this year as well, compliments of Amazon and its quest for total domination in the retail space.

I guess after all the times they wanted my phone number at checkout, they wont be calling me.

The one near me is 80% Sprint crap and 20% radio Shack stuff, mostly very overpriced cables and stuff. They did have a battery for my Honda key fob that I could not find anywhere else though.

I think this is the beginning of the end of them for real now. The stores are deserted.

I think a lot of things they did was dumb.
Yeah the stuff they decided not to carry was one.
When I was younger I graduated from Tech school and was trying to get a job close to home without moving. I applied to Radio Shack and they told me they would not hire me. When I asked why they said that is the Shacks policy to hire people who know retail, not electronics now. I asked the manager how long he expected his store to stay open with that policy? I said I used to get frustrated when I came in here because people who worked here knew nothing about what they sold. Well that store closed about a year later. I got a better job and then a better one and here they are floundering. Another Radio Shack in the area closed about 4 years after the first one. Now, I think one is still open and if you ask anybody around town only 1 out of 100 would know where it is at.
Like the one poster said, they used to have electronic kits and stereos and meters and lots of gear, kinda unique.

There are none around here anymore. Not that they were useful the last 5 years or so anyway.

They have a great model. You can purchase just about anything, have it delivered for free the day after tomorrow, if you don't care for it you can return it for any reason, and they have excellent customer service. What's not to like? Until they get some competition that does as well or better than they do at any of the above, they're running with it and I would too.

I chuckle, because for the past decade or so it has been an occasional form of entertainment to go to a Radio Shack just to see if the clerk would tell me that I didn't really want what I came in to buy. They never disappoint.

Last time, I saw something with a sale sign on it, and thought it was a pretty good deal, so I started to take it down off the shelf. The clerk immediately piped up with "That sale price is obsolete...I can't honor that."
I just chuckled, said "Oh, OK" and walked out.

Good for scanner frequency books back in the day, but that's about it. Their wafer cell batteries are (were) also way overpriced compared to other national retailers.

Their name itself is pretty anachronistic. They try to do consumer electronics but everybody and his mother is in that game: Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, etc.

And who does hobby electronics now-a-days? Not enough of them to support a national business.

And for those who still do hobby electronics there is Frye's brick and mortar and a dozen online stores that provide more variety, better quality, and lower cost.
