That's beyond entertaining. In my neck of the woods, elected officials who cease residing in their city/county (as appropriate) forfeit office as a matter of law. I'd be surprised if there isn't a similar provision in Washington law.

Late Monday the Seattle City Council voted unanimously in favor of a personal income tax on its top earning residents. Individuals with incomes in excess of $250,000 and those filing jointly with incomes in excess of $500,000 would be subject to a 2.25% tariff. People with incomes below those thresholds would not be affected.

Seattle believes the tax will raise around $140 million per year and could help close the wealth gap in the city, while the mayor also cited President Donald Trump’s economic agenda as a reason to introduce the tax.

What is this "wealth gap"? And why do we need to close it? What is wrong with a lazy bum, that doesn't work, making less (aka a gap) than a small business owner that works 80 hours a week?

Sounds like a tax on small business owners. Do these IDIOTS not realize that many small business operate on margins in the 1 to 2 percentage points? An instant 2.25% tax could put dozens/hundreds of small business owners out of business. Instead they will just move their business elsewhere, so that Seattle is left with ZERO taxes, and less jobs, and less available services in the city.

These socialist communist are fucking moroons.

I think I've seen this movie before. Wealthy people either relocate outside of Seattle city limits or find other loopholes to minimize/avoid the tax...tax revenues come in much lower than expected....City Council makes up for the shortfall by raising the tax rate.

These liberals are so damn predictable and not that bright.

Absolute craziness. I wouldn't be surprised if King County will be next. We just got our sales tax bumped to 10% a few months ago. And other surrounding cities may follow Seattle's lead.

Ha! Dow Constantine, King County Exec, wants to raise that by 0.1 to pay for all kinds of liberal stuff.

10.1% sales tax isn't that far away now ...

What will it take for the commoners to say "ENOUGH"? 15 percent? 20 percent? 25 percent? If there are more working class people than parasites, the working class should be stomping a mud hole in the asses of the liberal commies in charge at the polls. If there are more parasites than working class, it is time to declare the city a loss and move on.

This stuff is like gun control. The commies in charge know that they can't do a 50 percent tax on the working. So, they get two percent here, three percent there. Temporary taxes are never temporary. Money to build a school or courthouse will always be used elsewhere. Lies will be told, no one will be held accountable. Until the working class finally says enough.

These self-serving statements always crack me up. Nothing is stopping anyone who wants to be taxed more from voluntarily handing their money over to whatever government entity they think deserves it.

I am curious about the process. Will employers be required to report earning to Seattle on those employees who reside in the city? How will it be enforced or audited? Are they counting on the honor system for residents to report income? Will those below $250K have to report as well and provide financial info to show they don't owe the tax?

As usual, poorly conceived with no thought to the unintended (but predictable) consequences. More flight from the city. This time residents in addition to the businesses that have been migrating away for the past 5+ years.

What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

That is the other way to look at her statement. But the fact that she is in favor of this tax leads me to believe she has some kind of altruistic devotion to giving the government her money. And like 911Boss said, there are already ways to do that.

Most of the wealthy Democrats live on the other side of Lake Washington.
They need to push this East.
Include Mercer Island, Bellevue, and maybe even Issaquah if you are serious about tapping into the wealth.

Meanwhile in Tennessee... If I got this all correct in my head,

we are looking at a $2 Billion surplus, and we have no state income tax.

The legislature just voted to phase out the Hall tax of 5% on unearned income (dividends and interest income) via a 1% decrease each year till 0%.

They also just voted to reduce the sales tax on Groceries a bit.

However, they did sneak in a gradual incremental increase up to a total of 4 cents on gasoline to help soften the impact of the other cuts. One can't help but notice that it was snuck in while gas is at low prices so less complaints were arising from that.

Overall I'm pretty OK with this.

This is what happens when you very actively seek industry world wide... You land investors and create good paying jobs that put people to work, and that in turn pays the bills.

If it ain't woke... don't fix it.

I brought this to my Rep's attention. Wasn't happy with the slight of hand.

The war was lost long ago when Washington opened the borders to those escaping what they destroyed in California. Seattle rules King County now. I wish you luck in your survival.

I love it when they talk about a "fair share". According to the CBO, the top 5% income earners already pay 60% of all revenue to the federal treasury. The bottom 20% of all income earners pay zero federal taxes.

So, what is a "fair share"? Do the top 5% consume more federal services than they pay for in tax dollars? Just exactly what is anyone's fair share?
