That’s odd, smithnsig. Maybe an allergy? Does grape juice irritate your esophagus too?

Could be acid reflux or a hiatal hernia.

I was never a wine drinker until last year when my girlfriend got me into it.

Years prior to this, I found out I had acid reflux that was tearing up my esophagus. Between meds for the first couple years and adjusting my diet, it has gone away.

Drinking wine doesn't give me any issues so far, ( and hopefully it doesn't! )

Yes it does a bit, but not like a dry red wine.

Some cheaper reds (read real cheap) can give you heartburn. I don't know why. I can't drink "julio gallo" red wine - heartburn city. that's cheap wine right there. A decent but not expensive red - no problem. i just looked on wiki, seems that sulfites are added to cheaper wines as perservatives, with concurrent negative physical side affects. that prob explains why i can't drink some cheap reads.
