Don't speculate or rely on what the news media said. Commander Bauer went down fighting with this thug in a manner that will make even the most harshest Police critic proud. He performed like a true warrior and we all should be proud. Sometimes a guy goes up the chain of Command and never stops being the Police no matter how many stars he has on his collar. Commander Bauer was one of them. He was NOT your typical Police executive. A while back he became quite vocal about the "catch and release" method of criminal justice in Chicago. He never stopped fighting the good fight or doing what's best for the citizens of Chicago and the men and women in his Command. He was a true gem.

This +1.
Over the last tree years, I came to know more about the man. He was indeed a rare guy. Vocal about crime, but had a real concern about the men and women of this job, and the people in the community. He was a true gentleman.
I always felt as if I was working "with" him and not "for" him. There were many times I was on a high risk stop or job, and who'd I see backing me up, Paul Bauer. He wasn't there to critique, supervise or check up on us, he was there as a man, a fellow officer. I can count on one hand, possibly two, all the people I've had in my lifetime that have earned my respect. He was at the top of my list. Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't give that praise out lightly. I am old school through and through. Respect is earned and not merely given. I can honestly say that we have lost a great man and fellow officer.
