Is Biden the Democratic front-runner by default?

"Former Vice President Joe Biden is coming off his worst week on the campaign trail and has seen his lead shrink in Iowa amid new attacks from Democratic rivals hoping to close the gap with the race’s front-runner.

The rough patch, topped with a flip-flop on the Hyde Amendment that brought unwelcome comparisons to other Democratic candidates on the keystone issue of abortion rights, has brought new scrutiny to Biden and his campaign.

The former vice president is facing questions about whether he is too much of a centrist for a party leaning left, and whether those supporting him in public opinion polls really hold any passion for his candidacy. "

Biden a front-runner....maybe not so much Roll Eyes according to some deep thinkers I know.

Would you believe Buttigieg? - I know, but that's what I'm hearing...

just a thought off the top of my head...

he has the benefit of national 'name brand recognition' among Dems

which makes him several steps ahead of many of his more 'regional' competitors

this will flush out a bit as the real race gets closer IMO

Creepy Joe is still Creepy Joe... but many people are conditioned to choose the known over the unknown - even if the unknown is the better choice

they're all socialist / communists to me so it makes no difference (Trump 2020)

Joe Biden is his own worst enemy. He's a moron. It really is that simple...the guy is dumber than a post. A walking example of why term limits are a good idea.

Unless the DNC pulls some shenanigans like they did last time to keep Bernie out, there's not a snowball's chance in hell that he gets the nomination.

I sure hope so!

Trump mops the floor with Creepy Joe easily. I would almost worry about low voter turnout.

Biden probably has a smart staffer or two who's told him to lay low - it can only mean he makes fewer gaffes. He's letting his lead and name recognition dissipate while he can. Once he has to start working hard, the gaffes will be legion.

I would say so. As Gustofer said, he is a moron. He is also pretty creepy. Those are the most offensive things about him really. Against the current backdrop of really awful, extremist democratic candidates that almost makes him seem like a good guy. He's dumb, but mostly harmless. He doesn't hate America like the rest of them. He's shotgun Joe, lovable village idiot.

I would imagine this makes him a strong candidate with a lot of moderate democrats, kind of like the hold your nose and vote for him situation we had with McCain a few years ago. He isn't a good candidate, but he's the best of what they've got.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

It seems the Dems would have done two things as the campaign season has kicked off:

First, decided as a group that the establishment is broken, and that the voters are looking for a fresh face. Not an unknown, but not someone who is not old, tried, and going to spout the same old thing that failed them in the previous election.

Second, decided to rally around a few strong candidates, rather than parading out a dozen or more people who they know have no chance.

I think Biden is their front-runner. They don't have a back-bench, just a bunch of bench-warmers.

Case in point of Democraps eating their own. Keep it up!! Smile It's "Yahoo News", but here it is:

Biden’s ‘deluded’ remark about working with Republicans after Trump triggers backlash

Joe Biden has triggered a furious backlash among Democrats [emphasis added] after suggesting Republicans would be willing to cooperate with the party once Donald Trump is out of office.

The former vice-president, who is leading the race to become the 2020 Democratic nominee, made the remark at a fundraiser on Monday night, according to a Daily Beast reporter.

“With Trump gone you’re going to begin to see things change,” Mr Biden reportedly said. “Because these folks know better. They know this isn’t what they’re supposed to be doing.”

The comment came at the end of what was considered a damaging week on the campaign trail, after the 76-year-old appeared to flip-flop on federal funding for abortion and was attacked by rivals for pushing “the same old politics”.

“Biden's delusion that somehow Trump is the only problem with the Republicans is disqualifying,” tweeted David Rothkopf, a prominent political scientist who supports the Democratic Party.

“It shows either a faulty memory, a gross analytical failure, wishful thinking or a willingness to lie in order to make his ‘bridge-building’ candidacy seem more plausible.”

Biden's only upside to most dem voters is he is closest to the center. Bernie had that going for him untill Biden joined in.

I don't think that the majority of dems are as comfortable with the extreme swing of the party as the party thinks they are. The party leadership is listening to the vocal minority and mistaking it for the voice of the masses. This will be what causes dem voters to stay home and keep trump in for another term.

Booty-gig is younger and more articulate. That certainly helped Obama v. Hillary in 2008. The gay thing is a plus in a Democrat primary.

Still, Biden probably remains the Democratic front-runner by default, until someone gains traction (maybe in the debates when more people start paying attention).

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Biden may be the dim front runner for now but more intense exposure coming up will expose him as the creepy guy he is. Seriously something wrong with that guy and he (they) won't be able to conceal it.

He probably is, but it is also too early to know who may emerge as an alternate, if anyone.

Bernie is close-ish to the center? Is this the same Bernie I am thinking of?

Closest, not close-ish
It says a lot about the Democratic party when before Biden joined the race, Berie was the canidate closest to the center. Still a long way from center, but closer then the other ones.

"Booty-gig" Big Grin

The theory is that Biden will self-destruct. Very likely! Smile

Booty-gig will emerge as the preferred candidate because of the youth and articulate manner as noted above. Plus, the Demo's just love to have a candidate that is the first [fill in the blank]. Black, woman, illegal alien, Islamic, etc. You know, whatever is hip and cool Cool . In this case his name says it all "Booty-gig". Also, because of this, they (even the candidates) will not attack him - so careful to be p.c. - you know.

The Dems view Biden in one of three ways: a) has-been candidate (his train left in 2016 and was exposed as a lesser candidate in 2008), b) Creepy Joe (feminists hate males especially handsy males), c) Out of touch old white man.

There's a number of long-time Dem strategists who have astutely saved Biden, by limiting his appearances and recognizing that he's the only candidate among them that has any appeal to non-urban voters. Unfortunately for them, the sounds of hate and outrage from the many other candidates makes Biden appear to be an outsider, thus he gets ostracized.
Buttigieg checks many boxes traditional Dems want: not-too rural/not-too urban, young, gay, former Navy officer, Rhodes scholar. When Biden falls-out, they'll jump to Mayor Pete, however in this age of identity politics and everything needs to change, the Dems are attempting to burn their playbook and rewrite everything, to include the ability to court non-Dem votes.

He's their front runner because he's the only one that sounds remotely sane to the general election voters.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, he's tried to run several times before but can't stand up to any sort of scrutiny. He's a gaffe machine and has no appeal to the Democrat primary radical voters except that he isn't Trump.

They Dems are in a lose/lose situation. If they go with Creepy Joe they alienate a small but extremely vocal far left base, but one big enough to keep him from making any headway by just sitting home on election night. If they go far left and run a Bernie or Warren, they will IMO alienate the quiet majority of Dem voters who just aren't interested in socialism, free everything and open borders so many of them will sit home. The media is not encouraging a moderate middle ground either, they keep stoking the far left fires. Either way it's great for 4 more years of MAGA.
