...not the same thing.

I know quite a few of my fellow Sigforumites have been around long enough to remember what liberalism used to mean. If you think about it, today's "liberals" really aren't liberal at all. They're more left-end-of-the-political-spectrum-fascists.

True liberals, or what are becoming known as "Classic Liberals," find leftists as odious as the most conservative of conservatives.

Classic liberalism is closer to libertarianism than anything else--mainly differing in whether government should have a role at all, and, if so, how much.

This "gimme free stuff/suppress free speech/white privilege" crowd ain't liberals, that's for sure.

God Damned Commies, of course.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

They may not have been, but they are now the same thing. Leftists camouflage themselves with benign cover to conceal their true nature. In doing so they tarnish that cover forever. Classic Liberals fled to Libertarianism while Leftists dragged Liberalism to the extreme. We know today that Liberalism and Leftism are functionally identical.

Brain dead.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Sorry!

I just think the struggle between ideas is what gets us the best result. When the left or the right has unfettered control, it ain't pretty.

Must be a Washington thing. I was going to state a yin to the yang. Without evil how do you measure good?

That pic speaks volumes. In addition to all that has been said here, maybe liberals are naive. They somehow believe they will not get burned themselves by the programs they promote.

They may not have been, but they are now the same thing.

Not so true as it was, say, a year ago, and becoming less true by the day.

I'm seeing more and more liberals, I mean true liberals, aka: "classical liberals," disavow the character and goals of leftists and seeking to re-establish liberalism as distinct from the leftist agenda.

Ironically, it's the radical left's attempts to stifle free speech that I think finally provided the impetus for liberals to distance themselves from those who've hijacked liberalism.

I used to be a liberal. Then liberalism became not so liberal. So I became a libertarian. But I've never quite subscribed to the entirety of the libertarian ideal of nearly-no-government-at-all. In truth: Classical liberalism more closely aligns with my ideals than does libertarianism.

Liberalism, true liberalism, is getting close enough to divorcing itself from leftism that I'm beginning to almost become comfortable with calling myself a liberal, again.

I have nothing but disdain for leftists.
