Apple cider vinegar as a health benefit? Login/Join

Anyone here use it on a daily basis as part of a health benefit program? Most of the major medical web sites seem to poo poo it for the most part while other places seem to laud it's health benefits.

I've had some stomach issues as of late and the doc seems to think it may be divertykulitis. Had some pretty severe bouts with whatever it is lately. I was put on a regiment of some antibiotics for seven days and has cleared it up for the most part. Makes me wonder if I didn't have a bacterial infection.

Anyhow I have people telling to me to start the apple cider vinegar regimen daily. Two tablespoons mixed with water. The people who tell me this have been doing it for a long time and swear by it. Anyone here have personal experience? My gut (pun intended) tells me it's a minimal benefit if at all.

Diverticulitis is not likely to be helped by apple cider vinegar. Changes in your diet will help. Your doctor should have given you some suggestions. DK your age, if the problem continues a colonoscopy is in order.

I agree, unlikely to help, probably won’t hurt. Just one of those “things”.

I’d follow the Drs advice, be cautious with diet, etc.

My mom had a pocket rupture in 2015 and nearly died. I don’t recommend that.

I would get the capsules and swallow a couple with plain water instead.
It will lower the pH of your stomach acid and should help digestion.
Also, drinking raw cabbage juice helps rebuild your stomach lining and is my go-to cure for heartburn, which I rarely get.

You could start here WebMD.

However, it mostly says "Research doesn’t back most of these claims".

Yea, the medical sites down play it while the cider-related commercial sites laud it. Go figure. Roll Eyes

Avoid, like the plague, nuts, seeds, alcohol and tobacco.
Get a colonoscopy asap.

I listened to people who swore it was an invaluable tool in my quest to lose some weight a few years ago. So I tried it for about six months. It did nothing. I didn’t lose one single ounce of weight. What did help me was the age old method of diet and exercise. As far as I’m concerned all apple cider vinegar does is help the guy that makes it become richer.

If you want to use apple cider, there are lots of good gummy supplement options. We have taken them in the past, but never noticed too much of a change in anything. Magnesium has been a better supplement for me for overall health and digestive assistance.

It resolved an acid reflux issue with me. It seems a contraDiction to add acid to an acid problem but a lack of acetic acid can cause your flap to not close. I started it and within a week I could sleep without GERD. The medicines helped but now I am off all meds.

It also shows to help regulate blood sugar slightly.

As far as being a cure all, it’s not.

You need to find a good physician that you trust and talk to him (her) about this shit.

Have the colonoscopy scheduled for the middle of Jan. after the holidays. Drank a number of beers this past Thanksgiving with family without any ill effects. I asked the doc about diet and she didn't say anything specific. I have heard about nuts and popcorn being a no go. Have had a number of slices of pecan apple pie the last few days without and ill effects as well.

Just seems like some bacterial infection that the antibiotics dealt with. Time will tell.
But I don't think the vinegar is going to be a part of my daily life.

Diverticulitis is the infection of small sacks in the lining of the colon. The Old School theory is that Diverticulitis becomes symptomatic when food particles get trapped in the sack and start to rot. BTW, these particles are small fragments from nuts, seeds, and other hard to digest foods that tend to be chewed into small chunks and swallowed. It's fine to eat nuts if you chew them into paste but most people don't do that. Basically creamy peanut butter is fine but the chunky version is verboten. Note, seeds include Tomato seeds which are thought to be one of the primary triggers for Diverticulitis.

That is the current medical advice concerning Diverticulitis. Problem with that is some newer studies indicate the exact opposite. One recent study indicated that Adult Males with a high nut intake actually do better that those who forgo nuts. Some diets recommend going low fiber but recents studies are now indication that a high fiber diet may be mildly curative.

With all the conflicting information on Diets for this condition my approach is to take things in moderation. I'll also note that I am a real believer in high fiber diets because I've found Oatmeal is a real aid for the constipation I get as a side effect for some of my heart meds.

Diverticulitis can go hand in hand with a tendency to form hernias, so if you have ever had a hernia it's very likely that you have diverticula (sacks) in your colon. BTW, the sacks that form in the colon are technically small hernias in the lining of the colon.

As for the No Alcohol recommendation, as I understand it that is because Alcohol can act to suppress the immune system and it's standard practice for anyone with an infection.

Final note, this is NOT something you want to ignore, if that small infection goes out of control it can turn into Gangrene which is typically Fatal in the intestinal tract. If your gut hurts bad then get yourself to an ER and do NOT "wait to see if it gets better". I'll also note that if you are symptomatic a Colonoscopy is not a good idea, it is much better/safer to go straight to a CT scan. So before going in for your Colonoscopy make sure to talk o the Gastro Doc about any symptoms you may be having.

BTW, for me hernias are hereditary, as is Colon Cancer. So I am well acquainted with both issues.

I've stopped counting.

After my colonoscopy last year, the GI doc told me that I have diverticulosis (the little pouches on the intestinal tract are present...diverticulitis refers to those pouches becoming inflamed or infected) as well.

Anyway, he said that it's estimated that 50% of us Westerners (men) have diverticulosis, and it is primarily due to not having enough fiber in our diets. Now, you could probably ask 5 different GI specialists, and receive 5 different answers, buy my guy recommended daily fiber supplement, particularly psyllium. So, I started taking Metamucil daily, for what it's worth.

Oh, and I have not tried apple cider vinegar, but I don't think I could handle that anyway...whew!

I use it on my daily lunch. I haven't had a stomach issue (no pains, no upset feeling when hungry and no burning when I lay down) since I started using it. That's purely anecdotal, of course.

I just finished my sixth bottle from Costco. They sell a 3 pack and I mix a bit with water. I haven't noticed any effect over the last year and I probably won't continue as it is just another chore for me to get the bottle out of the frig. and mix a small amount with my water. No, I don't measure but I am sure I use more than the bottle's recommended amount.

I buy the Costco 3 pack and mix an oz in a 12 oz glass of ice water. Taste isn't offensive and I never have heartburn. Don't see a downside to using it.

It lowers your blood sugar ( I'm type 2 diabetic).
I just use a shot glass. Mixing it with water just prolongs the disgusting taste. I chase with booze to kill the taste.
