Other than oil and terrorists.

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People again must learn to work, instead of living on public assistance. ~ Cicero 55 BC

A University of Washington prof is going to have a talk about everything that middle east immigrants have done for us but it's going to be in Olympia. I was going to go to overcome my various and sundry phobias but its an hour drive for what looks like a ten minute talk so I'm going to stay home and phobic.

Violence?
Religion?
Obviously, these two are somewhat related.

The Middle East has been the powder keg of the world long before the world became addicted to their oil exports. It's just that with oil money came expensive weaponry and the whole world got sucked into the violence. Without the oil money, they would still be fighting, but with sticks and swords.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
-- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

It sure seems that way. They were fighting over some of the most worthless land in the world before they knew that it had any value.

Turkey is usually considered as part of ME as well and it is a major economy in that region. Its exports are around $170B a year.

Turkey is part of the ME and has a more rounded economy. They build ships, they're #14 in the world for # of automobiles built (right behind the UK), firearms, and construction camps.
