It originally had cocaine in it. So maybe that isn't so surprising.

Would you care to narrow your focus?

There are a lot of successful products out there. Viagra? The Cotton Gin?

Where are you trying to go, and why?

Arc.

The internet. I remember using a 300 baud modem to go on single phone line bulletin boards and post. Who knew it would turn into this!

Surprisingly. As in not obvious or apparent like an iPhone. Products that aren't mainstream but have sold millions.

At first glance, it does seem unlikely.

Then I realized a couple of things:

1. Not everybody has a good well or city water than doesn't taste like Clorox.

2. Road trips. I always take a 12 pack or so of bottled water if I'm going to be away from home overnight or longer. To me, most city tap water would gag a maggot. And compared to most motel/hotel water, city water is nectar.

3. Fancy coffee machines. My travel Keurig (I drank motel coffee...once...) is happier from a maintenance standpoint on bottled water and the taste is consistent.

Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Looks like most people are just suggesting wildy successful products. Perhaps elaborate in your OP?

Though, it might be hard to name something that satisfied "not mainstream," that is also "surprisingly successful," as success typically makes a product well known.

Flex seal

I laughed at the TV commercials initially then after using a few products to seal my gutter seams, which didn’t work well, I purchased a quart from HD. To my amazement, after 18 months where I applied the product I have no leaks

I still doubt seriously I’ll be putting a screen door in the bottom of my boat and using it....
