You will note that the IRS does not take the blame here for paying out the money. Offenders were told not to share information with other offenders. It is their own fault they say and taxpayers foot the bill.

Either the article is really, really poorly written, or no one seems to really know what is going on.

Oh, and FYI, Green Dot money cards is the currency of criminals. If you ever transact any business with anyone, and they want a green dot money card, they are likely a scam.

Every scammer out there uses and requests the victim to obtain green dot money cards. No one really has any idea of what scammers make off with through the cards, but I'd not be surprised if it isn't in the trillions per year.

So we're victim blaming here?

It's somehow the fault of the IRS that these crimes occurred?

Millions of returns get filed each year, and everyone wants their returns processed quickly, and those foolish enough to overpay want their refunds processed quickly. Yet no one seems to be screaming for a larger IRS, that can both quickly process everything, while also aggressively identify and combat fraud.

Further, when the scheme was identified the IRS did work to investigate, and stop the crimes.

So stop acting like the IRS is at fault.

The IRS is a wonderful organization. Remarkably efficient governmental service at its best. Just ask Lois Lerner.

No one is saying you should cheer that the IRS exists, or not be upset about the Lois Lerner scandal. However, fraud schemes against government organizations have gone for a long time, and you shouldn't blame the victims.

IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) has roughly 3,500 people, of which about 2,500 are Special Agents. That's not many people to combat the constant attempts to rip off the tax system in this country.

So again, it's ridiculous to blame the IRS, rather than the actual criminals who committed the fraud.

Lots of broke people with fucked up credit use Green Dot cards for legitimate reasons, as well as lots of lower income college students whose families use them like cheap Western Union services.
