I’ve been roasting my own beans for about 10 years using a dedicated cast iron pot, whisk and a hot plate. It makes a mess so I do it on my back porch, all year ‘round.

When the temp reaches 200 degrees in the pot I add the green coffee beans and stir non stop until after first crack. Once it’s done I pour the beans into a colander, place it over a box fan and stir to cool and remove the chaff. I make enough batches to fill my grinder and a half gallon canning jar.

I use a gas blower to clean up afterwards.

I It takes about 90 minutes to fill the jar and clean up.

It’s definitely a labor of love. It is much easier to buy roasted beans but I enjoy variety and there is no comparison to the taste. There is a learning curve but after 10 years I felt that I had it dialed in. Everyone raves about my coffee.

I’ve looked at drum roasters for years but preferred to keep things simple and I’m cheap. I finally broke down last week and bought a Behmor’s 1600 Plus drum roaster.

Oh. My. God. It’s obviously easier and less messy. With the built in smoke suppression and chaff collector I can roast indoors. The difference in the taste of the end product is astounding. Truly. I discovered that my previous roasts were uneven. A drum makes it even, a perfect every time.

There are several automatic roast profiles programmed in or you can change things like drum and fan spoken, temperature and time if you prefer to use the manual functions.

For those that roast your own. Give the Behmor a look. It’s pricy at $399. They aren’t discounter anywhere but at Roastmaster.com shipping is free and they include 8 pounds of green beans to ease the learning curve.

Patriot, great idea.

Up for Karma is 1 pound of fresh roasted coffee.

1. Must love Coffee
2. Must be in USA

Tha Karmanator will pick a winner at the end of the week.

Where do you get your beans, and which do you get (if there's more than one type)?

I used to roast in a air popcorn popper. I gave it up because it was so messy. Count me in.

Great karma; would love to try some of your freshly ground coffee!

I just ordered some Montecristo Perlados; I think they would pair nicely.

Thanks for the opportunity!!

In. I love good coffee. I buy from a guy locally that visits most of the growers he buys from and roasts as you purchase.

I would love to try your coffee, Jeff. I have tried roasting here at home, but I also have to do it outside because of the smoke. I have a roaster, but it is a cheaper one.

If I don't win the karma, I would like to buy a pound from you. You can email me if that is possible.
