My very last awful migraine turned out to be an aneurysm, which got me to the ER, went home and ended up rupturing the next morning. Definitely a life changing event. Don't delay having it checked out if it's severe, it could possibly save your life too. I was extremely lucky but not without costs.

Regards, Will G.

In addition to seeing a neurologist who specializes in Headache Medicine, the following is a useful resource both for patients and physicians with migraines. In Central Illinois there should be specialists available for treatment. Here is the link http://iheadachemd.com/

My wife has suffered from them for years. Not many of the medicines do much more than take the edge off for her, and a couple made her too loopy to function. The only thing that has helped her - along with avoiding certain triggers - is the botox shots. They're not pleasant but they can keep her migraine free for up to two months or so at a time. Might be worth checking into, if the usual medicines don't help.
Best of luck with them - definitely no fun!

I get them in the right side of my brain. Behind the ear and high up

I had a stroke 2 years ago and I can't take Zomig again...

Now I take, 2 aspirin, caffeine some kind of prescribed NSAID....or go home and take a Percocet to knock me out, if Iv'e gotten to it too late.

Mine are from stress and dehydration....

I try and drink 1 liter a day and avoid stress-yeah right.!!

Just recently had some kinda seizure around my old stroke injury that gave me the same symptoms...so stress is back and I had one (migraine) yesterday...it lasted 8 hours....ugghhh

I have had migraines all my life. I took Imitrix for a while and now take maxalt when suffering.
I have found weather or changing barometer as a trigger. Lack of hydration another, too much sunlight another. Sinus also triggers mine. I take 3 spices for sinus problems along with sinuzyme. They really help my sinuses.
I am not sure your wife has a migraine. I had a severe migraine one time that last for 3 days and hospitalized me. I was vomiting and could not eat.
Feverfew liquid, taken daily is supposed to prevent migraines. She should also take potassium/magnesium for prevention. They have greatly reduced my migraines. You can get that stuff at health food stores.

What "defines" a migraine? Does it have to be excruciating pain or can it just be a persistent headache?

Migraines are not headaches. I have had migraines for over 35 years. Average 25 a month. Have tried all types of preventable medications but none helped. Also tried alternatives like Botox, chiropractor, acupuncture etc. no go.
Everyone's migraines are triggered different so the best thing to do is keep a diary. Could be light sensitivity, smells, diet, caffeine, cheese. So many different things. I use sumavel Pro shots which is a needle less injection. It just pushes it thru your skin. Very expensive but insurance covers it.
Headaches take a little time and go away, migraines just keep building and keep getting worst if untreated to the point of taking over your life. You get Nausea, and I also get aura which are flashing lights right before migraines begin.
Topomax helps some people.
Dark quiet room helps a lot.

My wife has tried most of the medications here for her migraines. She recently had a Daith piercing in an effort to help. She said it has reduced the number and severity.

I used to get horrible chain migraines in college. One would start, I would take some meds and sleep it off, and within 15 minutes of waking up the next one would start again. It was debilitating as I couldn't see or speak properly in addition to the pain. After a few days of chains I'd go to the emergency room. They would pump me full of Demerol until the pain went away, I'd pass out and sleep for 10 hours. When I woke up I'd be good for a few months.

Eventually I found a neurologist that helped. He prescribed me Maxalt MLT 10 mg. It dissolves under your tongue and gets into your bloodstream 2X faster than normal meds. I always have a pill on hand and take it at the very first visual symptoms. This has helped to control the much less frequent migraines when I get them now. I still feel like crap but I can still mostly function once my eyesight returns, and no more chains. I was on Imitrex before and it never did a thing to touch my migraines.

I also keep a regular workout schedule, avoid caffeine, eat very healthy, and make sure I don't get too low on sleep. I still have too much work stress and will occasionally get the "holiday/weekend migraine." After a couple stressful weeks, when I'm finally on vacation and the stress is removed the migraine comes rushing in. Thankfully with Maxalt and the other lifestyle changes it's just a minor annoyance now. Find a good neurologist, they can really help.

The chain migraines you describe are called rebound migraines. They are caused by the medication that are supposed to relive your pain. That's why they keep coming back. When I get that a round of prednisone ( steroids) for one week breaks the cycle. Taking it instead of your regular meds.

As far as pain mgmt, my dentist turned me on to an over the counter method that works as well as Vicodin, 2 ibuprofen and one Tylenol. He uses this for patients in his international missionary work because he cannot transport narcotics. This actually works well.

I use hydrocodone 10/325 3 times a day for back pain but it does nothing for migraines. Like I said, everyone is different that's why there is no cure for migraines Frown

Glad it helps you out.

Migraines are not headaches.

Most neurologists might disagree. A migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by recurrent headaches that are moderate to severe.

mi·graine
ˈmīˌɡrān/
noun
a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea and disturbed vision.

the root is latin and means one sided...thus Migraine...they only hurt on one side of the head.

With mine, I can pinpoint it to and area no bigger than a golfball when it starts...but if I cannot get it under control it evolves to a throwing up, smells make it worse, light hurts, noise hurts, I see "floaters", and sometimes it causes loss of vision...

You will know if you get one!
