Last time I checked fighter jet pilots don't fuck with their cell phones while flying. I guess a train full of souls don't matter much to a union train driver. Same thing with Navy Ships - fucking cell phones. Stupid shits.

I watched an Captain (Navy) chuck an IPhone over the side because he found a kid playing on it during an all hands drill. Mustered the entire division topside to do it.

Current indications is that the driver may have been 'distracted' on this new route? Bollocks.

This evening the southbound lanes of I-5 were opened. Just two lanes but maybe all lanes in a day or so.

I-5 is now open in all lanes.
Positive Train Control (PTC), a safety mechanism, was promised almost a year ago. This could have prevented the accident.
"Eleven months before a speeding Amtrak train flew off a bridge and onto I-5, David Smelser of the Washington State Department of Transportation's Rail Division made a promise to the Lakewood City Council.

At a meeting January 17, 2017, Smelser addressed positive train control, or PTC, the system that can automatically slow a speeding train.

"PTC will go in in the forthcoming months -- before we start service," Smelser said.

Positive train control systems were largely installed but not operating when the train derailed during its inaugural trip on the Point Defiance Bypass on Monday morning."

To me it sounds like they didn't test the system thoroughly prior to starting service. I don't know how the DOT can promise PTC before the start of service and have passengers on the train before the system is even tested. Somebody is a major fucking idiot.

I find myself saying that a lot these days, especially concerning the People's Republic on Puget Sound, the socialist trough formerly known as Seattle.

Why have conductors/engineers if you have this automatic control system? Why can't the crew obey the rules??

When so many of these train accidents are operator error (this one appears to be), I question the training/certification process.

Am I missing something?

Amtrak will pay derailment costs, governor says

December 20, 2017 06:34 PM

Gov. Jay Inslee released a statement Wednesday confirming that Amtrak has agreed to pay derailment costs following Monday’s tragic event in DuPont that killed three passengers.

“The swift response to this tragedy has been the result of cooperation from all the involved jurisdictions,” Inslee said in the release. “The priority has been on taking care of those on board the train and restoring access to I-5 as soon as safely possible.

“This response, however, does not come without financial costs.”

Inslee spoke with Amtrak president and co-CEO Richard Anderson about the matter Wednesday.

He said in the release the corporation will pay for costs including medical and incidental expenses for injured passengers and their families, road clean-up and repairs, and restoration of rail service.

He also said Amtrak committed to make Positive Train Control (PTC) operational on trains in Washington as soon as possible, and before the federal deadline on Dec. 31, 2018.

“I want to be clear there are still many unanswered questions about how and why this incident occurred,” Inslee said. “I have confidence the NTSB’s investigation will provide those answers.

“Crews have made commendable progress on restoring I-5 and I ask that travelers continue to be patient as they complete opening of the lanes.”

All they seem to be able to talk about right now is the Positive Train Control system, like that will take care of it.

At work the old saying is make it idiot proof than you will create a bigger idiot. Much of the time it is so true it is almost spooky.

I've found it comes down to hiring the right person for the job. But far to many HR people do not or will not ask the right questions.

To me, the safety systems that should have been put in place were not. So regardless, the project stakeholders that made that agreement need to be held accountable for this failure too. Just because operator error could be a factor, doesn’t mean it’s ok that you’ve under-delivered on the safety systems that were promised.

How do we know if the engineers were trained properly when it appears the whole thing was a rush job and a waste. I believe I read that the transit time savings is 10 mins on a 3.5 hour trip. I’d love to know how much daily revenue this route generates. My guess is it doesn’t break even and cover costs.

Seems like this accident was very preventable.

Amtrak pay? The governor must be misinformed. We pay...

I continue to be amazed and thankful that only 3 people died. The rail cars jackknifing and sliding sideways must have bled a lot of energy off. When I saw the first pics I just knew it was going to be dozens...

Tired of the whole PTC cop out. Yes, they should’ve installed but didn’t. Question, how do you mot-ate at 80 MPH and not know it? Also, how do you not know that this 30 MPH curve is ahead of you? Is this your first time on this track?

NO, Most companies will not pay what you need to pay to get the right person.
