I've got these Ultrafires all over the place and in cars, boats, etc. Decent light and have been reliable, no failures after 3-4 years.

AMZN link - $3.50 each.

I'd vote for Fenix. I have several of their lights and given them as gifts.

This is a very nice light. If you choose the optional momentary end cap switch, you get variable light output from a barely visible glow with light pressure applied to full output with heavier pressure, a very nice option to have. It can also take a rechargeable lithium ion 14500 which gives a higher output than a conventional AA battery will deliver.

If you can answer a few questions it might help us flashlight nerds....
For what purpose do you require the light? EDC? SHTF?
What do you want to see?
The entire backyard? Spotting a critter across a field?
What kind of operational interface?
Momentary? Clicky? Reverse clicky? Twist? Side Button? Combination?
How many modes?
High, low, Moonlight, medium, Turbo (high bursts for short time before stepping back down to preserve heat and battery?)
What mode do you want to come on first?
Do you care about preserving night vision?
What kind of batteries?
Are you feeding it Alkaleaks? Or would you be open to Eneloops or lithium primaries or even 14500 Lithium rechargeables?

It's like guns- there is no one gun solution so I am not being a dick. Well not on purpose....

ETA: Ok, well 556Fan hit a homerun- peaks are awesome and bombproof and affordable- if you like what they have, there are many options. I also like SOME Surefires but usually with tweaks. And I like Malkoff's and ElZetta all of the above for serious uses.....

Obviously, you hit a nerve- in a good way- I love lights and have many. Just wanted to add, if you have means and desire there are also many CUSTOM light makers and modders that do amazing things. From milling the bodies of lights out of hunks of exotic metals to tweaking cheap-o lights and making them awesome..... Just thought I'd add that.

Beat me to the punch. I usually toss my link into these threads. Smile

I really like the LD12. It will work fine with AA, but it really shines when using rechargeables.

+1. Got half a dozen of 'em here and there. Little hard on batteries but WAY bright and you can't beat the price.

I have, and like, the Pelican 1910. It is not a blinder, but useful around the house for finding things. 106 and 21 lumen settings, <$25 at Amazon.

Zebralight is the Cadillac of flashlights; they have an excellent selection of AA lights. They are probably the best built factory light out there in terms of construction and UI.

Little more info: just looking a for a basic back up edc.

My daily carry is an HDS Rotary as my squeeze which I love and a peak eiger as my keychain back up.

Looking for a AA to have as aback up, throw in the car, keep in one of my travel kits, can’t find CR123 batteries for my HDS etc.

I want a push button for one handed operation. Will probably just use standard Duracell’s etc.

In that case, Amurr and since ( as I suspected) you already have quality gear, (and since you have a potentially serious use in mind,) I would say look at the Malkoff EDC line. I have a few and they are GREAT at what they are great at- being bomb proof- but not too huge. They are awesome IF you like the modes...

I got my father a 2xAA Olight for just that use. I'll probably get a 1xAA for backup myself.

I had a long reply (I know, another) written out and my DSL dumped. Whatever. I have legoed together some Surefire and Malkoff stuff that is handy as crud in 2AA format. But you are spending $100+ for most of this stuff. I personally don't like anything (other than some of the out of production surefires because I think they are cool) UNLESS they have potted electronics. I am just too nerdy that way: I have literally thrown my malkoffs and HDS lights on concrete with nothing but cosmetic scuffs. Even $50 or so 4sevens and Fenix lights of mine have failed from simple drops.

That said, you can make a 1AA 4Sevens that uses either the Pro or Turbo type of head and has a momentary rear activation by watching their online store. They are pretty robust even though they aren't lights I carry without other options.

I don't think I even scratched the surface of details from my last attempted post but I am tired of typing and you guys don't want to hear from me anymore anyway. Smile

Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA. It runs on either CR123 or AA, no adaptor needed. Simple UI, great pocket clip and very respectable run times on Energizer Lithium (don't use alkaline batteries in your flashlight).
