With both wife and I working from home I am burning through toner and, although I have always used Brother brand I started to look at some of the third party/aftermarket brands.

Anyone had any luck good or bad?

All are Chinese junk. I lost 2 Brother MFC 5800's to junk purchased from Amazon. In my Brother color lazer I have used Amazon cartridges wiith mixed results. 3rd party toner has less volume & many leak toner.

Use the good stuff. I think working from home opens your eyes to all the office perks. Good coffee is expensive and toilet paper and paper towels add up.

We have a Brother printer. I just looked it up and we bought these from NewEgg:
Rosewill RTCA-TN450 Toner cartridge (OEM Brother TN-450, TN-420) 2,600 pages yield (black). With the discount, I got these for appx $15 each.

NOTE: We are very light users (just personal use - I'm retired and have no home based business), but these have lasted a couple of years each before running out.

I changed over to lasers years ago... cartridges cost like crazy but last a good long time... but always have a replacement... this is especially costly if you have a color laser printer with the cost of about $90 for each... and the thing won't even print in black and white if one of the color ones goes empty... at least with Brothers.

I would not trust off brand ink or cartridges...

2 years ago I needed a new replacement toner cartridge for my Brother multi-function all in one laser printer.

At the time I just didn't want to spend roughly $100 for one.

Based on a friends recommendation ( IT guy at work) I looked on ebay.

I found a seller who had something like over 2,000 positive feedbacks of over 99.5% and was US based.

Got 2 of them for just under $20 total, including shipping.

They were brand new.

Of course they were from china, I think they all may be, but I'm still using the 1st one, it has not run out yet.

Someone posted above about ruining their machine. I don't know about that, mine continues to work just fine. The printed sheet produced is crisp, clean and clear. No muss, no fuss.

I have no complaints at all.

I'll suggest you look at ebay, price them, seems like they're all sold as a pair for an extremely good price. Look for a seller with a LOT of completed sales and excellent feedback ratings.

It worked for me.

Good luck to you.
.

EDIT to add: I just looked on ebay for a replacment toner cartridge for my model. Found a seller with over 313,000 sales and a 99.1% positive feedback for brand new cartridge, seller based in Long Beach CA. If I needed one today that's probably who I'd order from.

Are you using the larger toners? My Brother takes either the TN-630, or the larger TN-660.

The 660 gets more than twice the pages of the 630, for less than twice the price.

The other thing is to run it past the "low supplies" warning. I think it's a setting in the general menu, to allow it to keep going.

I run it until the print quality degrades, take it out and shake it, then run it again. Gets me a couple hundred extra pages that way.

So on many Brother printers, toner usage is based off of pages and not actual words or amount of print on the page.

Try this:

Open the top of the printer, then simultaneously press the "Secure" and "X Cancel" buttons. This will put the printer into a special service mode. Use the + and - buttons to scroll to whichever toner you want to reset. Each color should have three options which, I believe, allow you to tell the machine what type of 'new' toner cartridge is installed. I think "Y.TNR-STR" is yellow cartridge standard, "Y.TNR-HC" is for the high yield yellow cartridge and "Y.TNR.STD" is for a standard yellow cartridge. Once you've selected the cartridge you want to tell it you're installing hit the "OK" button and will get an "OK reset cancel" type screen. Hit the up arrow to reset. Now you're back to printing in style!

This allows you to use the toner until the page fades...which is when the toner is really empty.
