Ohio Steel Mill, Idled from Free Trade, to Reopen Thanks to Trump’s Tariffs

An Ohio steel mill, forced into closure by free trade and imports, is reopening this year thanks to President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariff on foreign steel imports.

Republic Steel executives told Cleveland.com that the rolling steel mill is set to reopen in Lorain, Ohio, with 60 employees being initially hired to restart production.

“Over 60 employees have been hired and completed training, and the mill has undergone a complete refurbishment,” executives said in a statement. “We have successfully run internal production trials, and now anticipate receiving sufficient orders to support moving to a production mode in the 2nd Quarter of this year.”

The United Steelworkers union, which represents the steel mill’s laid off American steelworkers, said they are looking forward to working with Republic Steel to reopen the facility, but officials said they have to be officially informed by the company of the reopening.

“We have reached out to company representatives, and are waiting for their response,” the union’s executives told Cleveland.com. “At this time, none of our members have been recalled from lay-off. The USW is committed to work with Republic Steel to facilitate the startup and return our members to work as soon as possible.”

Lorain, Ohio, was devastated in 2016 when Republic Steel announced it was laying off about 200 American steelworkers and idling its steel mill due to free trade and foreign dumping of steel in the U.S.

The American steel jobs were subsequently offshored to South Korea, the Phillippines, and Taiwan, where domestic workers are paid much less than U.S. workers. Republic Steel, due to free trade, offshored close to 450 American steel jobs between 2012 and 2015 to countries like Spain and Canada.

In total, free trade has cost more than 275,000 American workers their manufacturing jobs in Ohio from 1994 to the present day. U.S. free trade with Mexico has cost Ohio nearly 35,000 jobs, leaving those American workers displaced. Likewise, about 106,400 U.S. jobs were eliminated due to free trade with China.

^^^^^^^^^ "That giant sucking sound".

George Herbert Walker Bush and Clinton fucked this country for nearly three decades. Now, finally, we can bring the jobs back and unshutter the factories that those bastards closed up.

Romney pisses me off so much. That guy is such a piece of shit. Even after Trump tried to bury the hatchet and helped him get elected he can’t help but do what he can to screw the President over. I sure hope Utah remembers his actions when he’s up for reelection. He’s a disgrace.

Don't count on the folks in Utah getting rid of him. The demographics there in his favor are very strong. He'd probably be able to murder a high official and still get elected. (Now, if he started drinking coffee . . . .)

That’s very unfortunate. It’s unbelievable that people can be that blind as to not see what kind of grade A asshole this guy is. He’s going to turn out to be another McCain.

More Mueller fabricated high drama

A dozen agents in tactical vests, armed w rifles, early morning raid in the dark, w CNN cameras rolling,..... to arrest Roger Stone.

Charges are that Stone lied in testimony that he did not attempt to get Wikileaks emails of Podesta and DNC.

This is all so surreal. Clinton hires a former British spy to get dirt on Donald Trump from Russians in the Kremlin. The dirt is packaged as an "intel" product and fed to the FBI and news sources. It turns out to be unverified and probably completely fabricated.

Mueller ignores that.

But Trump campaign officials who were trying to find out about what Wikileaks had on Clinton are prosecuted w raids like this one on Stone.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Looks like they sent in Seal Team 6 to arrest a 66 year old man that they could have just told to turn himself in. Instead they manufacture this nonsense and leak it to CNN so they can be onsite with cameras rolling. Perfect illustration of what this really is.

I appreciate that. It's all good. After our convo, I read back a couple pages in this thread from the day before and I was grateful you kept me around. Sorry for getting your blood up also.

You said something that resonated with me:

If you think I'm going to tolerate leftist HORSE SHIT in this forum, when it's every freaking where else I go...

I get that. A couple months back you asked me what my problem was. I think I know what it is now. It's the media. It's discouraging and I don't know how you stay so optimistic. Your answer to me in the Ocasio-Cortez thread ("Don't worry") is what I like to hear. To use a Pulp Fiction movie reference, I want to hear Trump do a Marsellus Wallace and say, "You ain't got no problem, Jules. I'm on the mf'er."

Don't get on the wrong side of the wrong people is basically what this is.

I'd expect this in today's Venezuela, but it is sickening to see it going on in this country.

Fuck the FBI. They cuffed his hands and his feet? what the fuck is wrong with these assholes. As if the old guy were going to escape by running away from dozens of younger healthy agents. They invited CNN to the scene so they can do a perp walk and restrained him like he was a death row inmate. I'm so tired of this shit!

When does Hillary get the same treatment?

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Let's not forget that in 2 years and with roughly 27 million spent so far they've only been able to bring charges on things that were discovered as part of the original investigation. I really don't like that they have that additional investigatory power. If they find something out of the core mission they should turn it over to the regular FBI and let them decide to chase it or not...

27 million... I know, just a rounding error. We should have people in the streets with pitchforks and hot tar...
