Will be laying some pavers this summer; have questions Login/Join

I want to replace the pavers outside my back door this summer, and have some questions.

It's only about 12 square feet in size, and is being replaced because a couple of them are broken, and they didn't use any weed barrier beneath.

Is there a website out there that shows paver patterns and then calculates the number of pavers/sizes needed?

I like a few different patterns, but also want to do a minimal amount of cutting/sizing along the way.

Typo in title. Pavers you mean, not papers.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Lol, I corrected it twice in the body of the post as it kept "correcting" it for me, but didn't notice that one.

I can't help with your original question (website calculating # of pavers needed). However, if you have multiple broken paver stones then it's a good indication that the base under the existing patio wasn't done right. In other words, you may have a bigger problem than just the lack of weed barrier.

It was just Bubba'd together by previous homeowner I'm sure. Doesn't look like any polymeric sand used either. They probably just dug down, laid some sand below, and laid pavers over that.
It's just a small patch outside the back door into the yard.

I plan on doing it right.

If you go to your local hardscape supplier they will be more than happy to help you out.
It's not very difficult. To do a small job like this.
We use Belgard most of the time.

I celebrated retiring with a home-patio project of pavers in a 12x24 configuration of complex 3 sized pavers with a short wall around 1 end.

Not only are there youtube sites to give ample tips, all the actual suppliers had their own table for calculation of such, since block size and pattern can affect that number you use.

In my new site application (sloping old lawn/weed patch) I had to prep the site allowing 1/2" per foot drainage tilt to the run of the pavers.

Also had to go deep enough with gravel under the sand under the pavers. Required power vibrator to set pavers properly, you may get by with hand tamp.

Took about a month of pleasant mornings, in the shade before the sun came around the tree.

Biggest issue was an improperly filled/tamped/settled old hole that now has a bit of sag in a small corner. Until our little earthquake a few years ago the walkways I also built were absolutely flat.

Do your research and the results will be what you want.

Tips:

  • Don't use sand, use rock dust.
  • if you need to level, don't use sand/rockdust, use clay rich dirt.
  • Renting a power tamper is recommended, for that size you can use hand tamper, but tamp the crap out of it.
  • If you need to level anything significant, definitely get power tamper.
  • Finish with polymer sand, NOT regular sand.
  • Use leaf blower to remove excess polymer sand before watering, it stains.
  • Don't make multiple cuts at same time, if blade gets hot it will be toast, or use wet saw.
  • If meeting up with concrete or other flat surface, leave pacers 3/16-1/4" higher, they will sink.

Did a search, there are lots of paver patterns out there. Much would depend on the paver and the pattern used.

Added the word "calculator " to my search string and came up with several.
Like was mentioned, each manufacturer seems to have their own calculator.

Due to the small area to be paved, I can't go too intricate, so I was thinking something these lines.

An area of 4' x 3', using 6" x 6" and 6" x 9", I should only need to cut a couple.

Hopefully it stops raining by summer, sheesh

I'm a function over form kinda guy but I wanted pavers on a 1000 sq ft area between my house and garage. I would have paid the price but the guy I trusted was so booked up that it was going to be mid summer.

I've got a good concrete guy so I had a slab poured last week.

See? Now that's too easy Big Grin

My neighbor did the same a few years ago.
But I like the contrasting colors (versus the colors of the brick) I can get with the pavers, so I'm still leaning that way.
