Forum member Legal Beagle has proposed a group buy of 124 grain 9x19mm and 62 grain 5.56x45mm ammunition of custom manufacture. He is offering up one hundred lots of one thousand rounds each, exclusively to members of SIGforum.

Like many of you, I'm fed up with things as they now stand with the availability of ammunition. We have a forum member who is doing something about it. What I've seen so far looks good to me. I'll let him fill you in on all the details. Ask all the questions you wish.

I've long counseled the laying in of supplies when available and inexpensive. Well, 'inexpensive' has gone by the wayside, at least for now, so we'll concentrate on the 'available' part of that.

Perhaps by the end of this year the commercial channels of ammunition will once again begin to flow but my gut tells me otherwise, and given the nutjobs in Washington right now, my advice to all of you is to make hay while the sun shines.

Mister Beagle, the floor is yours.

LOWER PRICING UPDATE:

Great news!! We were able to negotiate terms with the supplier and are now at:

$795.00/1000 for 124 grain FMJ 9x19.
and
$895.00/1000 for 62 grain FMJ 5.56.

As we approach our deadline, we'll keep working hard to leverage the forum's purchasing power.

What’s this about?

I’m starting a small, veteran-owned ammunition company with a USPSA competitive shooter (US Coast Guard veteran with deployable ops and firearms training experience, certified by USCG, USCCA and FLETC). Our goal is to make reasonably priced match grade ammunition in bulk and make it available to Sigforum members in member-exclusive runs.

We are offering two products:

A) One thousand (1000) brass-cased, bulk-packed, match grade, 124gr FMJ 9x19 rounds made with high quality components from industry-leading makers.

B) One thousand (1000) brass-cased, bulk-packed, 62gr FMJ 5.56x45 rounds made with high quality components from industry-leading makers.

How will this work?

We want to make sure you have the utmost confidence that we can deliver the product on time and on target in terms of quality. Para had some great questions for us to start with, and we’ve thought through the most transparent way to show our progress and ensure delivery.

1) We will take pre-orders for forty-five days (45 days) from April 8 until May 23.

2) We will collect funds from members when the order is placed on May 24.

3) The funds will be held in an escrow account with statements etc. sent to Para.

4) We originally planned for Christmas, but our supplier is working diligently to give SIGforum Christmas in July! We expect to start shipping July 31, 2021.

(It may take several weeks to get the entire shipping order complete, especially if we need to confirm shipping addresses or have changes).

This will be a Sigforum exclusive project.

Only members can purchase, and members will be limited to a four lot purchase of each caliber (4x 1000 rounds of 9x19; 4x 1000 rounds of 5.56x45) so that we give an opportunity to everyone.

Each member ordering will get a lot number assigned, and I will make a public Google Docs spreadsheet that shows how many lots are sold; I will also have a spreadsheet that I will share with Para to show who has ordered and paid, with a spot for tracking numbers to show delivery progress.

Great! How can I get in on this?

Just like any Classified post, you’ll post an “I’ll take it!” and send an email with:

- Forum Name
- First and Last Name
- Street
- City
- State
- ZIP
- Phone
- E-mail
- Number of lots and caliber

I’ll then reach out to you via reply email with digital payment options for the platform of your choice (e.g. Venmo, Zelle, etc.)

(What if my spouse/best friend/co-worker/neighbor wants in? Great! Have them become a Sigforum member and order!)

Why are we doing this?

Between the two of us, my buddy and I run through more than 50k rounds a year between matches and classes. Normally, we would do buys from high volume dealers but the COVID-19 pandemic and new administration’s discussion of gun control measures has ground down distributor orders to a halt. After spending weeks of reaching out to suppliers, we found a partner that will contractually guarantee delivery of components and materials in time for a December delivery. That was great news for us! It turns out, however, that the order quantities start at 100,000 rounds for the /minimum/ order.

I’ve also been frustrated seeing price gouging on Gunbroker and other sites. Several SigForum members have been helping each other out at “pre-crazy” prices and we thought there might be a lot of people in the same boat as us: looking for good quality, reasonably priced ammunition, from a steadily available stream that prioritizes Sigforum members (rather than the highest bidder or the “early bird” hoarders).

We got the wild idea of starting an “ammo Kickstarter” and at first it wasn’t a really serious idea — until I remembered the way SigForum came together on group buys and projects like helping our members who ran into rough times. As it turns out, we have all the required skill sets to actually run an ammunition company: I’m an attorney in government service and serve as an instructor and firearms division liaison at a large training facility, teach business management/business law/accounting classes, and am intimately familiar with project management in highly regulated industries. My buddy is the “brewmaster” when it comes to making and testing loads and works with high-end firearms companies in addition to his experience with running an armory and managing large volume ammunition purchases.

Everybody wins: Sigforum members get ammunition at a reasonable price, the forum now has a source for frequent group buys, and we have enough ammo to shoot for our classes and matches! Further, by working with Sigforum, we can solicit feedback from each of you on how the load performs and “tweak” the recipe with our supplier.

There’s a chance that each of us may be able to find ammo in dribs and drabs at a lower price or that the price of ammo may lower, but the power of an entire forum purchasing together makes it more likely that we can start a consistent supply of ammo for the forum and keep costs down relative to the shifting price of ammo for the foreseeable future.

I have more questions!

No problem! Reach out to me by email and I’ll be glad to answer them or give you my phone number so we can talk through the process.

THANK YOU! - Legal Beagle

Wow!

Thank you for taking the lead on this. Fortunately I was one who heeded the warnings and bought early and often. That said, I will likely be in touch.

I do have one question: What happens if you are “oversubscribed”? Are you able to up the order to meet additional demand, or do the “Tail-End Charlies” have to wait for the next group buy?

This might be a dumb question, but, are the cases reloadable brass or steel casing?

If brass cased I’ll take one.

Great question! We can secure 100k this run, so I will reach out to each member in order to get payment. Once we hit 100k, I'll ask if members want to waitlist for the next group buy and work with the supplier to start another run of components and materials. The sooner we hit 100k, the sooner I can start negotiating a second contract!

Not a dumb question at all; it's brass-cased!

To my knowledge, ammunition has not been made with copper cases since the 19th century or thereabouts.

With the increasing scarcity, I wouldn't be surprised if people start making ammunition out of anything they can get their hands on!

Fortunately, our supplier assures the highest quality components and this run will be reloadable brass-cased ammo. Smile
