Bishop confirms National Catholic Reporter is not a 'Catholic' publication

January 25, 2013

Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Missouri, has confirmed that the National Catholic Reporter should not advertise itself as a “Catholic” publication.

In a column appearing in his diocesan newspaper, Bishop Finn notes that he, as the bishop of the diocese in which the Reporter is located, has the duty to “call the media to fidelity.” He cites the Code of Canon Law, which (in #1369) calls for “a just penalty” for anyone who “excites hatred of or contempt for religion or the Church.”

The National Catholic Reporter, Bishop Finn remarks, has taken an editorial stance that puts the publication at odds with the Church, by “officially condemning Church teaching on the ordination of women, insistent undermining of Church teaching on artificial contraception and sexual morality in general, lionizing dissident theologies while rejecting established Magisterial teaching, and a litany of other issues.” He reveals that he has received numerous complaints about the Reporter’s editorial policies.

Bishop Finn reminds his readers that in 1968 his predecessor, Bishop Charles Helmsing, directed the editors of the Reporter to remove the word “Catholic” from the title of their publication. The newspaper’s editors refused. Bishop Finn says: “From my perspective, NCR’s positions against authentic Church teaching and leadership have not changed trajectory in the intervening decades.”

The bishop discloses that soon after arriving in Kansas City, he sought to engage the Reporter editors in a discussion of their fidelity to the Catholic Church, but was rebuffed. “At other times, correspondence has seemed to reach a dead end,” he adds.

Bishop Finn concludes that “I have a responsibility as the local bishop to instruct the Faithful about the problematic nature of this media source which bears the name 'Catholic.'” He says that he remains willing to discuss the issue with the Reporter staff, but as things stand, “I find that my ability to influence the National Catholic Reporter toward fidelity to the Church seems limited to the supernatural level.”

Thanks for the post.

For those who don’t follow the knitting/guillotine reference, during the “Terror” of the French Revolution, some women reportedly who were at the execution site to watch the beheadings occupied their spare time between blade drops by sitting and knitting.

This guy’s reference thereto is obviously intended to state that not only does he believe conservatives should be executed (and evidently for nothing more than being conservative, just as being an aristocrat was enough to be executed during the Terror), he would be happy to watch merely for the spectacles’ entertainment value, and would therefore also need something to stave off boredom between killings.

If we analyze his position to that extent, it is yet another stark demonstration of how deranged some members of the left have become in their blind hatred of those whom they disagree with. And in his case it’s even more telling that someone who is at least ostensibly a Christian would not hesitate to express such views in public.

As a Catholic, I thank you for further emphasizing the clarifying. I will repeat that I think this is a distinction without difference.

Sigfreund seems to grasp the depth of what this guy is proclaiming. I didn't want to believe it a few years ago, but these people would be happy to watch us die if it meant their way.

Yep. This publication is beyond inappropriate and is deserving of a reaction. It's disgusting.

Attacking Catholics is acceptable to the left...

Hopefully he's in the first wave.

I'm not sure he knows what is entailed in being a revolutionary. FARC tried it for 50-60 years, most end up dying. Is he willing to die for whatever his cause is?

To be fair, he’s not attaining for the high aspirations of actually doing anything in his revolution, much as the old ladies who knitted by the guillotines weren’t the ones storming the Bastille and the homes of the bourgeoisie. No, he wants to sit on his ass while the able-bodied carry out his revolution. By definition, this makes him a “useless idiot” in direct contrast to the “useful idiots” who actually perform a function in these sorts of hoo-haws, which I will be sure to pass along to his editor. The email is beginning to take form.

Ok, a question for the Soy Boy Reporter, who is leading and fighting for your side in the revolution? Antifa, a bunch of masked mixed up gender pansies? Who else, BLM (their people and folks are too busy killing each other),Pelsoi, Schumer, Warren, Sanders????

While you are day dreaming about this revolution where you are knitting front row at the guillotine, just remember this one thing that is unlike the French Revolution: our side has around 300 million guns and a trillion rounds of ammunition, your side can't decide which restroom to use.

my sister a retired school teacher sent me a meme afew days ago, I think it's been here, but what the heck. It said: "People are choosing sides for the civil war. One side has a trillion bullets, the other side an't decide which bathroom to use." She asked me if I was doing my part.

As to Madame deFarge; when asked what she knitted as she watched every execution, she responded, 'shrouds, mostly.' I'm surprised the lefties don't want a postage stamp with her on it.

Thank you sigfreund. I did not get the reference.

This is just another weak leftist who thinks that someone else will fight the war he dreams of.

Just as a clarification, this web thread is about some doofus who supposedly works for an entity called the “National Catholic Reporter”.

Do not confuse it with the ”National Catholic Register” which is a legitimate news organization, even though they have similar sounding names.

Every day it becomes clearer an clearer why the left loves muslims so much. They want the exact same thing. Either you submit completely and totally to their ideology (with them in charge of course) or you need to be eliminated.

Like the savages there are not many that will say this to your face, but this guy appears to be one.

Both of them are completely incompatible with a free western world.

You know, so far, it only seems to be a handful of folks that don't seem to be reading the thread and evidently only read the title and yet feel the continual need to "clarify" that this fucker somehow isn't one of our own, like modern Catholic churches aren't replete with these types. I mean, guys, come on.... Roll Eyes

I'm not worried about Catholics....or Baptists....or Mexicans, Greeks, Asians, Blacks, Whites, Greens, Mormons, 7th Day Adventists, Hari Krishnas, Women, Fishermen, Skydivers etc. I'm worried about Leftists who also happen to be Catholics, Baptists, Mormons Greeks, Geeks etc. I can distinguish the essential characteristics that Leftists bear in spite of their other identities.

I'm sorry, I'm thinking about the cats again...
