Parkland students who led March for Our Lives get Robert F. Kennedy human-rights award

WASHINGTON
A group of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who started a gun-control movement after the nation's deadliest high school shooting received an award previously bestowed upon Chinese democracy dissidents and a Sudanese doctor who treated victims of torture in Darfur.

The March for Our Lives activists were honored by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights in Washington on Tuesday, alongside groups promoting changes to immigration law, fighting for indigenous rights and promoting African-American political involvement.

"I’ve had the privilege of working with the students in Florida and we know what incredible people they are and the difference they are making," said Sen. Bill Nelson. "These students were the first ones to stand up and challenge the NRA."

Nelson talked with Parkland students David Hogg and Cameron Kasky after the RFK organization doled out the human rights award to Color of Change, International Indigenous Youth Council, United We Dream and March for Our Lives. Nelson said Kasky and Hogg told him they plan to campaign in all of Florida's 27 congressional districts ahead of the 2018 election.

Nelson also talked with Hogg about an attempted "swatting" incident on Tuesday, in which a SWAT team was called to Hogg's house to in an attempt to harass his family. Hogg and his family were in Washington receiving the award and were not home at the time.

"These students are getting all kinds of threats and it's going beyond threats, they're getting actual incidents," Nelson said. "And it's a shame that we can't have a discourse in America over the issue of gun safety that people have to take it out in a way of attempted intimidation of these students."

Hogg said the swatting incident was an attempt to distract him from his political work.

The Parkland students received the award from Ethel Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy's widow, and the March For Our Lives organizers will receive help from the human rights organization for their work, which includes a voter registration tour around the country and a political action committee that will pay for negative advertising for lawmakers who do not support the group's gun-control push. The March For Our Lives activists will also receive a portion of $30,000 prize money that will be split between the four winning groups.

The March For Our Lives was created by a few dozen Parkland students after a mass shooting on Valentine's Day. Initially, the group's efforts were focused on a march in Washington but their efforts have expanded to include political efforts in affiliated March For Our Lives chapters around the country.

“It’s an inspiration to see how vocal, engaged, and committed today’s youth are in their fight against injustice, and our 2018 Human Rights Award honorees reflect that passion for social justice,” said Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights President Kerry Kennedy in a statement. "The young leaders from the March for Our Lives, United We Dream, Color of Change, and The International Indigenous Youth Council carry on my father’s legacy of advocating a more just and peaceful world.”

In addition to the work on voter registration, the March For Our Lives activists are ready to help Nelson's reelection effort against Gov. Rick Scott.

Nelson walked up to activist Emma Gonzalez and after a brief hug Gonzalez beamed while offering her support to the longtime incumbent as he faces what could be the most expensive U.S. Senate campaign of all time.

"I get your emails all the time," she said with a smile.

I would not be a bit surprised if Hogg didn’t arrange the whole “swatting” thing.

Crap, they're coming to Iowa. On the bright side, they're not coming to the Quad Cities and hopefully I won't see them on the local news.

This article does not mention the - cue ominous music - NRA, but I'm sure they will blame us for every shooting anywhere in the solar system.

Parkland shooting survivors plan 3 Iowa events during national March for Our Lives

Kevin Hardy, Des Moines Register
Published 10:33 a.m. CT June 15, 2018 | Updated 10:46 a.m. CT June 15, 2018

Students from the Parkland, Florida school where 17 people died in a February mass shooting will bring their political movement pushing for gun control to three Iowa communities next week.

The massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sparked a high-profile campaign to lobby for stricter gun control. It has since spread to schools across the nation. Thousands of students in Iowa and across the country walked out of school in April to push lawmakers for change.

Now, the group March for Lives will bring its Road to Change tour through Cedar Rapids, Marion and Sioux City. Events include:

An event Wednesday in Sioux City. The group has not announced the time or location.
A 1 p.m. youth meetup Thursday at Noelridge Park, 4900 Council St. NE, in Cedar Rapids.
A 7 p.m. town hall Thursday at Linn-Mar High School Gymnasium, 3111 10th St., in Marion.

March for Our Lives is calling for universal, comprehensive background checks, better database technology for tracking guns, a ban on high-capacity magazines, a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles and public funding "to research the gun violence epidemic in America."

"The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to assure that no special interest group or political agenda is more critical than the timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country," the group's website says. "We demand morally-just leaders to rise up from both parties in order to ensure public safety."

The two-month tour began Friday in Chicago. They plan at least 75 stops in more than 20 states. A separate tour will make stops in each of Florida's 27 congressional districts.

"We can fix the political system," Cameron Kasky, one of the group's leaders told USA Today earlier this month. "Our generation and the many generations that are helping us can change the game."

So they're doing this from July 15 to August 15, when all of the kids will be out of school and nobody will be paying attention. Great. Well, they haven't been drawing many kids anyway, and I'm sure all the grumpy old people who've made up the bulk of these rallies will be happy to work around the tour schedule.

Parkland PAC formed to take on the NRA scales back

The group spent roughly half of its money on consulting services, with the biggest chunk going to Empire Global Ventures, a New York based firm primarily focused on corporate clients but whose founders boast political campaign experience.

Former MSD school resource deputy fails to appear before public safety commission
'He's a piece of garbage,' school shooting victim's father says

SUNRISE, Fla. - The then-sheriff's deputy on campus during the Parkland high school massacre was scheduled to testify Thursday before a state commission investigating the shooting, but he failed to show.

Former Broward County Deputy Scot Peterson was subpoenaed to appear Thursday before the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission.

An attorney for Peterson approached the podium instead and said his client would not attend the meeting and that he had a filed a complaint Thursday morning seeking to declare the subpoena of his client illegal.

"He's a piece of garbage," Max Schachter, whose son Alex, 14, was killed in the shooting told reporters. "He could have gone in and saved six children's lives and he chose to do nothing. After all those other officers went in to the line of fire, he stood behind a concrete pillar for 45 minutes and did nothing. He's a despicable human being."

Members of the panel were expected to ask Peterson why he didn't enter the building where 17 people were killed Feb. 14 and try to stop the shooter. Panel members said Wednesday that he was "not a real cop" and "a coward."

Peterson told investigators he didn't know where the shots were coming from and that he heard only two or three. His attorney did not respond to an email Wednesday seeking comment.

While Peterson was a no show, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel and school Superintendent Robert Runcie both testified at Thursday's meeting.

"There are some questions about what they did or didn't do, beginning with Peterson, and there are some questions about those deputies that were up on Holmberg Road and why they stayed up there and why they didn't react," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. "There are some questions about some of the delays in acting, but again, we have to look at it in its totality."

Runcie took to the podium shortly after Peterson's attorney addressed the panel, at which time Gualtieri, who is the commission chair, thanked him for his professionalism, transparency and cooperation with the investigation.

"I understand and appreciate the critical importance of the work of this commission and how it will inform the district practices and policies -- and not just here in Broward County -- but throughout the state of Florida and at a greater level on a national basis," Runcie said.

Runcie also apologized to the families who lost loved ones in the massacre.

"I am so, so sorry that you sent your kids to school on that day, like any other parent would, expecting them to return. And somehow, we failed to live up to that promise to you," he said. "I know there's nothing that we can do that's ever going to be enough to remove the loss, the pain, the hurt and the anger, but I'm committed to being present. I'm listening and providing whatever help, resources and assistance that we possibly can."

At least one of the victims' relatives said they were encouraged by Runcie's words.

"What I was encouraged by though was that he's viewing this as a 9/11 for the education system and so, if he will continue to follow through on that and actually make the changes and make security part of his responsibility, and he'll take an active role in making sure his schools are safe, then I'm optimistic we can have some changes," said Ryan Petty, whose daughter, Alaina, 14, was among those killed in the massacre.

Israel also faced tough leadership questions as the panel has suggested his deputies were not properly trained.

"Since this catastrophic event, we've been working at the Broward Sheriff's Office feverishly to do everything we can to not only keep children safe in school, but to make children feel safe in school," he said.

Public comments will be welcome at the end of Thursday's session.

Gualtieri asked those who attended the meeting to refrain from outbursts and to withhold any remarks until the public comment portion begins.
