Several sources are reporting she is in failing health and was moved from a hospital to hospice care. Link to BBC because they don't seem to have a lot of popup interference (and they're not CNN):

And from Blues Brothers:

Yep, an icon indeed. She opened up a trail in the music scene that many other musicians followed. She will be missed.

Love her song , Tramp, sung with Otis Redding. My wife and I scored tickets to one of the Grammy Awards shows back in the nineties at Radio City Music Hall. Someone on the show was scheduled to sing an operatic aria and cancelled at the last minute. They announced that Aretha would sing it instead. It was an amazing performance in a genre she was not known for.

She could sing!

She picked a day to go. Elvis died on August 16, as did Babe Ruth. On a happer note, my parents were married today, in 1943.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Only saw her once live, at Pine Knob/DTE Energy Theater in 1996. Probably tenth row. I was not disappointed.

NK402, you may be mistaken about "Tramp". The original song was done with Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas's daughter, unless there was a later cover done.
