I'm not familiar with the 5.7 mm weapon(s) the Fort Hood shooter is reported to have used. What does that choice of weapon say about his planning? Sounds to me like this was long-planned and the guy did not just "snap."

Why, any more than any other handgun?

The 5.7 is an extra deadly assault pistol with no legitimate sporting use. I guess.

Considering that his family members commented that he did not like guns or going to the range, I wouldn't make the assumption he was a collector... your average non-gun-person is more likely to own a glock or revolver, not such an expensive and odd firearm... unless they were hung up on the high capacity or ap potential.
Damnit... although I truly do not believe this was racially motivated (I believe this man was a selfish coward who was using any excuse he could find, including his birth-religon to avoid being deployed), it does start to smell like he planned this a bit. www.joshua-davis.com/ The Free State Project "If somebody says there ought to be a law there probably ought not." - Penn Jillette |

The media is going to blame the gun store rather than the shooter. Watch and see.

He sounds like someone with a major chip on his shoulder over not being allowed to leave service, getting stressed out over being deployed. Include a narcissistic personality disorder to the mix... and boom.
I will wager that he wanted the attention, and had no intention of getting killed. He wanted hero status in his little world, and recognition. As for the choice in weapons, I agree with MisterJoshua, and also suspect that this was a planned event. I think he probably could not gain access to an M-4 and ammo... The FiveSeven is easy to conceal, and has a high mag capacity, but he could have pulled this off easily with a Glock as well. ............................................................. ‘When the people fear the government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty”- Thomas Jefferson |

This caliber and firearm are somewhat popular with police units who may enconter perps with vests or with heavy clothing in lieu of vests. The projectile is extremely pointed and aerodynamic. Here's a page with a photo and some info. It's a pricey piece, as most FN weapons are. I wouldn't trade my Sig for an FN, however. Just MHO of course. http://www.impactguns.com/store/818513002509.html |

The Five-Seven seems to be an odd "main-stream" choice to me. It's kind of a uncommon and unique pistol unless I'm mistaken. And it's not like you're going to run into any Walmart or what have you and grab a couple boxes of 5.7mm ammo, it's an uncommon caliber. He probably chose it for it's lethality.
Isn't there something about the 5.7mm round and it's muzzle velocity? While the projectile may not be particulary large in size the fps on it is unreal or something like that. ______________________________________________________________ "After one week with me in my dojo, you'll be prepared to defend yourself with the strength of a grizzly, the reflexes of a puma, and the wisdom of a man." - Rex, Founder of Rex Kwan Do |

He was a coward trying to avoid deployment... so he went on a shooting spree on a military base. Hmmm... "I am a Soldier. I fight where I'm told and I win where I fight." GEN George S. Patton, Jr. |

It is probably a pretty good bet. But, this is a gleaming example of how guncontrol just doesn't work. It just outlines "victim" control. _______________________________________________________________________ Upcoming GGI classes www.grayguns.com Want free GGI training? My friend has one. I've never shot it though. Not you typical pistol.
Did they say he had two of them? If so, that's weird b/c they are pretty expensive and his family said he's not into guns.

Well if it shots a .224 bullet, it is close enough to the 22 Jet.

Yeah, I agree Tank, it sure sounds like another pacifist against violence to me. He knew darned well that the people he was going to go after would not be armed. I'd be willing to bet (and no way to ever prove it, of course) that he figured he'd end up wrestled to the ground, not shot and paralyzed by a brave young woman, and after he was wrestled to the ground, found not guilty by reason of insanity (or whatever the technical term would be) and ever after worshipped by his Muslim brothers and sisters for the murder of Americans - which he did not consider himself. He even listed his nationality as Palestinian when he went looking for a burka-wrapped servant for a wife. And I think my head may explode if I hear, or read, one more person using the term PTSD in relationship to this mass murderer. According to the NIMH, PTSD "is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat." He had no traumatic event, no ordeal, no personal assault, no military combat, no nothing. He treated others, yes, but his big event is he was a... forget it, I don't curse in public and this was about to be a post chock full. Forgive me, please, tanksoldier - I respect you no end, but I had to speak my mind. I hope I am misunderstanding what you meant with your post. I think that Tank feels as I do. (hope I am not being toopresumptuous...) Ironic the guy does not want to "go to war and kill" so he kills his fellow man and comrades, whom he took more than one oath to defend, the Hippocratic and the Oath of Office as U.S. Army Officer. Wings without Hooters is just chicken. ✡ |
