Ted Cruz: El Chapo's $12.6B fortune should fund Trump's border wall Login/Join

Preach it Ted!!

Republican Opens a New Window. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is re-upping a proposal to fund President Trump’s border wall – by requiring drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Opens a New Window. and other convicted drug lords pay for it.

In an interview with TMZ released on Thursday, Cruz said El Chapo’s criminal enterprise is worth billions of dollars, which should be used to secure the border.

The comments come after a federal judge in New York sentenced El Chapo to life in prison. He is believed to have smuggled about $12 billion worth of drugs across the U.S. border.

He was ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture.

Cruz wants the money forfeited by El Chapo – and other drug lords – to be funneled to border security and toward funding the wall.

“I think the next step is to criminally forfeit his entire global criminal enterprise – it’s worth billions – and we should use every penny of that money to build the wall and secure the border,” Cruz said.

Cruz acknowledged that finding and obtaining those assets would be no simple task.

Trump is allegedly on board, Cruz told TMZ. The president has promised Americans that Mexico would pay for the construction of the border wall.

El Chapo was charged with allegedly moving nearly 500 tons of cocaine across the U.S.-Mexico border, murder and money laundering, among other things.

He is also known for his legendary, and elaborate, second escape from a Mexican prison in 2015, which featured a mile-long tunnel and a motorcycle track.

Guzman was head of the Sinaloa cartel and is considered by the U.S. government to be one of the most powerful drug lords of all time.

Cruz originally unveiled the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (EL CHAPO) Act two years ago – at a time when a debate over funding for the border wall threatened to shut down the government.

Trump has harped on the border wall as an instrumental tool for stopping drugs from pouring into the U.S. and poisoning America’s youth.

You’d think the demorats would be all over this, since it keeps taxpayer money out of the wall. The reality is, they are already trying to think of ways to line their pockets with it.

It’s a damn good idea, which is why it probably hasn’t got a chance.

Such a simple and appropriate use of confiscated funds that it shouldn't even be remotely confrontational, which tells you everything you need to know about the current Dem party. Nothing will be permitted to impede their new voters from making it into this country. Nothing.

Maybe not, but at a minimum it will be one more club to use next year in savaging the Dems and their presidential candidate as America hating filth who don't give a damn about the Americans that elected them.

Of course, the commies won't go for it. Anything to derail Trump's plan to secure and make America great is what they'll do.

Mexico's new president wants the money returned to Mexico. Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Democrats will have to fight over it.

Returned to Mexico, hmmm. Would it be a safe assumption that the majority of that money came from the U.S. in some form or fashion? If so, I'm thinking the money ought to remain here - especially as this country is the only one with the fortitude to capture this violent criminal and put him on trial.

Trump should call this midget and tell him, "One more word about these funds and I'll turn off all remittances passing from the US to Mexico. Got it Juan?"

As was all of the things the guy did to many, many people, so do we really care what the Mexican president thinks?

Nah, I didn't think so.

Now this (if followed through) is a legitimate application of asset forfeiture.

Yeah, ill-gotten gains and El Chapo was convicted. That's what asset forfeiture should be.

Anyway, I doubt the US gov't gets a dime out of him unless it's physically located in the US. It's not like we're gonna auction off his property in Mexico. Pretty sure Mexico is gonna take that for themselves and not send a dime of it north.

Good luck finding any of his fortune. You might find tiny bits and pieces, but the bulk of it is going to be in so many shell corporations, cash, and hidden so deep that nobody can find it except his main guy below him and his book keeper. Otherwise rival cartels would simply just burn it all to the ground in a turf war. Also I highly doubt he has every single dollar he ever made either...….I'm sure he does have a lot, but so are drug traffickers carrying costs like security and the army they employ as well as bribes.

Yeah, all those dollars....must have originated in Mexico! Roll Eyes

Two possibilities.
  • It was counterfeit, printed in Mexico, so in that case it originated in Mexico but is worthless...no point sending it anywhere but the trashcan. I don't think this is the case, but it's the only case where this money 'originated' south of the border.

  • It is suspected of being proceeds from illegal operations and thus subject to US civil forfeiture, and so is subject to being appropriated by law enforcement like any other suspicious cash. (Note: I'm not saying that civil forfeiture is reasonable, just pointing out that if Joe Shlabotnik - American citizen - is subject to having his cash 'civilly' forfeited because it's suspicious, then so is El Chapo.)

  • It's not "suspected" or "suspicious".
    It IS drug money.

El Presidene is playing real nice, probably motivated by a little fear.
One of El Chapo's bargaining chips for a reduction in sentence is to start singing. IIRC, he said he'd give up a TON of government officials- Mexico, America, Europe... that were on his payroll.
