My liberal-lite retired doctor golf buddy and I were enjoying a beer after a round when I opined that liberal politicians spread falsehoods when they talk about wealth redistribution like there was a finite pile of wealth. My example was a couple of wealthy old Apple managers I met. They created their own wealth, I said.

He started to interject something about income disparity when I interrupted with "That's not what I'm talking about". That's when he said "Well, there is an ambition disparity". Well said, sir. I have known this fine man for decades and have the utmost respect for him. I didn't even know he was liberal, as he doesn't talk about national politics.

No... you don't say!
And the alternative, which is "wealth redistribution", another term for socialism, doesn't give anyone motivation ... it only tears down those who are self-motivated.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Are you sure he's a liberal? Might be a closet conservative.

You should have used the Socratic method to keep drawing out his thoughts and continue to refine that statement in light of liberal policies and wealth re-distribution. It could only lead down a conservative path.

His "ambition disparity" led him down the extremely long, expensive and risky path of becoming a doctor. When his peers were partying he was doing nothing but school. When his peers were out of college at their first jobs with spending cash and a great social life, he was eating Ramen and working 80hrs/week as a intern.

Then he worked long hours, paid his dues (and outrageous malpractice premiums) to finally pay off the student loans and carve a decent life for himself after all that sacrifice. Now, why does someone else have the right to help themselves to more of his money?
