Judge Tanya Chutkan

some things about her

appointed by Obama in 2014 to U.S. District Court for District of Columbia

from 2002 to 2014 she worked for Boies, Schiller, & Flexner LLP,

Boies is the lawyer who represents Weinstein and just got fired by the NYT.

When Huma Abedin was being questioned about Clinton emails, Abedin's lawyer was Karen Dunn (a partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner)

Karen Dunn was a senior advisor to Clinton when she was in the Senate.

Chutkan was the judge in the Imran Awan case (don't know current status of that)

Chutkan's husband was nominated by Obama to Superior Court of the District of Columbia in 2011.

Do you think you get appointed to things, hired to these jobs just because you have a pretty face?

Nope. DC is the pro “jobs for the boys” league. You have contacts, mentors, are deserving, somebody has an opening, you get recommended by one of your guys. Do a good job, have a reputation for being “sound” the word gets out. Stink up the joint, that word gets out even faster and your phone stops ringing.

Contacts!

LOL I am going to remember that one. I actually have a Rolodex on my desk. I inherited it from the last guy. I keep it for historical purposes. Scary thing is I remember a few of those names and ranks from twenty years ago when I was a pup. Sad thing about it, kids ask what the hell is it? Bryon York putting some event dates in perspective

Did dossier trigger the Trump-Russia probe?

http://www.washingtonexaminer....robe/article/2640470

The first report in the dossier compiled by former MI6 agent Christopher Steele was dated June 20, 2016

funded by Clinton thru Fusion GPS

Steele told the left-leaning publication Mother Jones that he took the first part of his dossier to the FBI " near the start of July ."

James Comey, when he was FBI director, told members of the House Intelligence Committee the Trump-Russia investigation began "in late July ."

on July 7, Carter Page, whom Trump had named to a little-used foreign policy advisory board, began a three-day visit to Moscow, where he gave a public commencement speech to a university known as the New Economic School.

In a dossier report dated July 19, Steele wrote that Page had met in Moscow with Igor Sechin, the CEO of Rosneft, the giant Russian oil company, and, separately, with Igor Divyekin, a senior figure in the Putin government

Page, in testimony to the House Intelligence Committee on November 2, denied meeting with Sechin and Divyekin in Moscow, and it's not clear there is any evidence, beyond the dossier, that he did

The dossier information made its way from Steele to the FBI to Capitol Hill. On August 27, the Senate's then-Minority Leader, Harry Reid, wrote a letter to Comey noting "a series of disturbing reports" about whether "a Trump advisor who has been highly critical of U.S. and European sanctions on Russia…met with high-ranking sanctioned individuals while in Moscow in July of 2016, well after Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee."

Steele continued to file dossier reports to the Clinton campaign and, apparently, to the FBI during the July-August-September-October time frame

At the "end of September," and again in October, according to British court papers, Steele personally briefed reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, the New Yorker, and Yahoo.

on September 23, Yahoo's Michael Isikoff reported that "U.S. officials" had "received intelligence reports" from a "well-placed Western intelligence source" that Carter Page had met with Sechin and Divyekin during Page's July trip to Moscow.

The allegations "have been discussed with senior members of Congress," Isikoff added, quoting from Reid's August 27 letter to Comey.

Fusion, acting on behalf of the Clinton campaign, directed Steele to brief Mother Jones. David Corn's article, which stayed away from the most incendiary parts of the dossier, was published on October 31, 2016.

One day earlier, on October 30, Harry Reid tried again to push the information into public view with a letter to Comey stating that the FBI possessed "explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his advisors, and the Russian government."

Unfortunately, despite overwhelming evidence that there was real collusion between the Dems and the Russians, despite evidence that Comey and Lynch had already begun the exoneration process for Hillary, despite evidence that Obama and his minions unmasked people for political purposes, our empty suit of an AG could give a shit. You want to drain the swamp? Start with Sessions. Unless you happen to be a beaner who jaywalks he has no interest in justice. Trump should fire him immediately.

another good article. this time from WSJ

https://www.wsj.com/articles/l...e-curtain-1510274070

The dossier amounts to one of the dirtiest tricks in U.S. political history . It was perpetrated by Team Clinton and yielded a vast payoff for Hillary’s campaign.

The Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign hired the opposition-research firm Fusion GPS in April 2016 to dig up dirt on Donald Trump. Fusion in turn hired former U.K. spook Christopher Steele to assemble the (now largely discredited) dossier. That full dossier of allegations wasn’t made public until after the election, in January 2017. And the media and Democrats continue to peddle the line that it played no role during the election itself.

“Details from the dossier were not reported before Election Day,” ran a recent CNN story. Hillary Clinton herself stressed the point in a recent “Daily Show” appearance. The dossier, she said, is “part of what happens in a campaign where you get information that may or may not be useful and you try to make sure anything you put out in the public arena is accurate. So this thing didn’t come out until after the election, and it’s still being evaluated.”

This is utterly untrue . In British court documents Mr. Steele has acknowledged he briefed U.S. reporters about the dossier in September 2016. Those briefed included journalists from the New York Times , the Washington Post, Yahoo News and others. Mr. Steele, by his own admission (in an interview with Mother Jones), also gave his dossier in July 2016 to the FBI.

The Clinton campaign commissioned a foreign ex-spy to gin up rumors, which made it to U.S. intelligence agencies, and then got reporters to cite it as government-sourced

it is fair to ask if the entire Trump-Russia narrative—which has played a central role in our political discourse for a year, and is now resulting in a special counsel issuing unrelated indictments—is based on nothing more than a political smear document. Is there any reason to believe the FBI was probing a Trump-Russia angle before the dossier? Is there any collusion allegation that doesn’t come in some form from the dossier?

The idea that the federal government and a special counsel were mobilized—that American citizens were monitored and continue to be investigated—based on a campaign-funded hit document is extraordinary. Especially given that to this day no one has publicly produced a single piece of evidence to support any of the dossier’s substantive allegations about Trump team members.

https://www.washingtontimes.co...-paid-journalists-w/

Fusion GPS, the liberal research firm that funded and distributed the anti-Trump dossier, has paid three journalists for work related to Congress’ Russia probe, according to court filings.

Lawyers representing the House Intelligence Committee made the assertion in a bid to force Fusion to turn over additional bank transactions involving reporters, law firms and a media company.

“The committee seeks transactions related to three individual journalists,” stated the House general counsel court filing, “ each of whom have reported on and/or been quoted in articles regarding topics related to the committee’s investigation.

The journalists’ names are blacked out. Documents list 10 House-demanded bank transactions from Fusion, or its conduits, to journalists.

Fusion’s two law firms, Cunningham Levy Muse and Zuckerman Spaeder and Cunningham, are asking a U.S. District Court judge to block access.

****************

speculaton: it would be interesting to know the names of the "journalists". How convenient if these journalists were paid to spread the dossier story

***************

a better report:

http://www.washingtonexaminer....firm/article/2641454

Newly filed court documents confirm that Fusion GPS, the company mostly responsible for the controversial “Trump dossier” on presidential candidate Donald Trump, made payments to three journalists between June 2016 until February 2017.

The revelation could be a breakthrough for House Republicans, who are exploring whether Fusion GPS used the dossier, which was later criticized for having inaccurate information on Trump, to feed anti-Trump stories to the press during and after the presidential campaign. The three journalists who were paid by Fusion GPS are known to have reported on "Russia issues relevant to [the committee's] investigation," the House Intelligence Committee said in a court filing.

But the recipients' names, the amounts, and purposes of those payments were either redacted from the documents that Fusion GPS filed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia or were not disclosed.

Fusion has asked the court to issue a restraining order against the House committee, which is demanding documents from the company that, among other things, explain the payments it made to reporters. Most of the documents sought are banking records.

Fusion GPS’s lawyer, Josh Levy

Levy also dismissed the Republican idea that these payments were somehow aimed at or otherwise used to help get anti-Trump stories written by the press.

"This is simply another desperate attempt by the president’s political allies to discredit Fusion GPS's work and divert attention from the question these committees are supposed to be investigating: the Trump campaign's knowledge of Russian interference in the election," Levy said.

One of the documents filed by lawyers for the House Intelligence Committee said each of the three reporters who received payments had written about the Russia probe

Additionally, a filing by lawyers for the House Intelligence Committee asserts that Fusion GPS “brokered meetings for dossier author Christopher Steele with at least five major media outlets in September 2016, including Yahoo news.”

The meeting by Yahoo resulted in one of the first media reports based on the dossier, which specifically mentioned Trump adviser Carter Page

At least two people have accused Fusion GPS of running smear campaigns by planting stories in the media with friendly journalists . Bill Browder, who was instrumental in initiating and promoting passage of the Magnitsky Act through Congress, has made that accusation

we are slowly learning about one of the dirtiest campaign tricks in modern political history. Paid for by the Clinton campaign

Wife of demoted DOJ official worked for firm behind anti-Trump dossier

A senior Justice Department official demoted last week for concealing his meetings with the men behind the anti-Trump “dossier” had even closer ties to Fusion GPS, the firm responsible for the incendiary document, than have been disclosed, Fox News has confirmed: The official’s wife worked for Fusion GPS during the 2016 election.

Contacted by Fox News, investigators for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) confirmed that Nellie H. Ohr, wife of the demoted official, Bruce G. Ohr, worked for the opposition research firm last year. The precise nature of Mrs. Ohr’s duties – including whether she worked on the dossier – remains unclear but a review of her published works available online reveals Mrs. Ohr has written extensively on Russia-related subjects. HPSCI staff confirmed to Fox News that she was paid by Fusion GPS through the summer and fall of 2016.

Fusion GPS has attracted scrutiny because Republican lawmakers have spent the better part of this year investigating whether the dossier, which was funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, served as the basis for the Justice Department and the FBI to obtain FISA surveillance last year on a Trump campaign adviser named Carter Page.

Top DOJ official demoted after contact with dossier authors

“The House Intelligence Committee,” Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., told Fox News in a statement on Monday, “is looking into all facets of the connections between the Department of Justice and Fusion GPS, including Mr. Ohr.”

Until Dec. 6, when Fox News began making inquiries about him, Bruce Ohr held two titles at DOJ. He was, and remains, director of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force; but his other job was far more senior. Mr. Ohr held the rank of associate deputy attorney general, a post that gave him an office four doors down from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The day before Fox News reported that Mr. Ohr held his secret meetings last year with the founder of Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, and with Christopher Steele, the former British spy who compiled the dossier, the Justice Department stripped Ohr of his deputy title and ousted him from his fourth floor office at the building that DOJ insiders call “Main Justice.”

The Department of Justice has provided no public explanation for Ohr’s demotion. Officials inside the Department have told Fox News his wearing of two hats was “unusual,” but also confirm Ohr had withheld his contacts with the Fusion GPS men from colleagues at the DOJ.
bruceohr

Former FBI Director James Comey has described the dossier as a compendium of “salacious and unverified” allegations about then-candidate Donald Trump and his associates, including Page, a foreign policy adviser. The dossier was provided to the FBI in July 2016, shortly before then-candidate Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination. As Comey later testified, it was in that same month that the FBI began a counterintelligence probe of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The disclosure by Fox News that Bruce Ohr met with Simpson and Steele last year expanded the reach of the dossier’s creators from the FBI into the top echelons of the Justice Department. Initial investigation suggested that Steele, a longtime FBI informant whose contacts with Mr. Ohr are said to date back a decade, might have played the central role in putting Simpson together with the associate deputy attorney general. Now, the revelation that Mrs. Ohr worked for Simpson calls that account into question.

A review of open source materials shows Mrs. Ohr was described as a Russia expert at the Wilson Center, a Washington think tank, when she worked there, briefly, a decade ago. The Center’s website said her project focused on the experiences of Russian farmers during Stalin’s collectivization program and following the invasion of Russia by Nazi forces in 1941. She has also reviewed a number of books about twentieth century Russia, including Reconstructing the State: Personal Networks and Elite Identity in Soviet Russia (2000), by Gerald Easter, a political scientist at Boston College, and Bertrand M. Patenaude’s The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (2002).

Contacted by Fox News late Monday, DOJ officials declined to comment.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the intelligence committee, declined to comment on the original disclosure about Mr. Ohr’s secret meetings, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Mrs. Ohr.

While Nunes has issued numerous subpoenas to DOJ and FBI relating to the dossier, and has threatened contempt-of-Congress citations against Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray for what congressional Republicans have termed “stonewalling” by the two agencies, Schiff has mostly objected to the demands for documents and witnesses, casting the entire dossier probe as innately political. “I think there's a hope that if they can impeach Christopher Steele, and they can impeach the FBI and DOJ, maybe they can impeach the whole Russia investigation,” Schiff told MSNBC in September.

Wife of Demoted DOJ official receievd a hsm license.

quote:
A month after Hillary Clinton hired Fusion GPS (April 2016) to sub-contract retired British MI6 agent Christopher Steele to write the opposition research report “the Trump Russia Dossier”, Fusion GPS employee Nellie Ohr applied for a HAM radio license (May 23rd 2016); a communication tool that would allow Nellie Ohr and Christopher Steele the ability to communicate outside the normal risk of communication intercepts.

Keeping in mind, both Bruce and Nellie Ohr’s subject matter skill-set within the DOJ would provide them with a comprehensive understanding of how to network and communicate with international actors outside the traditional risk of communication intercepts. In short, Mrs. Nelli Ohr would know that using HAM radio frequencies would be a way to avoid the risk of U.S. intelligence intercepts on her communications.

The Clinton Campaign hired Fusion GPS in April 2016. Fusion GPS then sub-contracted retired British Intel MI6 agent Christopher Steele to write the Russian Dossier. A month later, May 23rd 2016, Fusion GPS employee Nellie Ohr gets HAM radio license.

So are we to believe it’s COINCIDENTAL? All of a sudden, a 60(ish)-year-old woman decides to use a HAM radio the month after contracting with Christopher Steele for a Russian opposition research dossier on Donald Trump?

Nonsense.

The more plausible scenario is MI6 Agent Christopher Steele and Mrs. Nellie Ohr knew any communication with foreign sources/actors could be easily monitored; and this need for communication was, most likely, going to lead to an organized operation where an FBI counterintelligence operation would exist -per Agent Peter Strzok- and, due to the subject matter being constructed, confidential communication would be required.

One way to ensure secure communications with parties external to the U.S. would be the use of HAM radio operations. You simply establish the frequency to use, and the time of the conversation, and presto. That’s it. “Red-Dog-One to Red-Dog-Two, come in?” etc.

Fortunately, this FCC license application now becomes evidence of an intent to subvert traditional communications intercepts… which, when combined with the other growing trails of evidence showing Fusion GPS schemes around the manufacturing of the Dossier, gets more interesting.

Mrs. Nellie Ohr, a Fusion GPS contracted employee, gets HAM radio license May 2016.

Following along the timeline:

In June/July 2016 an initial DOJ FISA request is denied. This is simultaneous to FBI agent Strzok direct contact with Christopher Steele and the preliminary draft of the Russian dossier.

Then in August 2016, Christopher Steele goes to Sir Andrew Wood to ask him to act as a go-between to reach Senator John McCain. [Trying to give his dossier credibility]

Meanwhile throughout July, August and Sept 2016 Fusion GPS is paying journalists (NYT, ABC, NBC, Washington Post and Mother Jones, etc.) to listen to Christopher Steele and simultaneously shopping the dossier to them.

Soon thereafter, October 2016 – The Obama administration, through FBI Agent Peter Strzok and DOJ Deputy Bruce Ohr, submits a new, more narrow application to the FISA court, now focused on a computer server in Trump Tower suspected of links to Russian banks. The second FISA application is accepted and a surveillance warrant is granted.

Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who was reportedly scheduled to testify behind closed doors in front of the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, will instead meet next week due to a "scheduling error," Department of Justice officials told Fox News.

McCabe’s testimony was likely to, at least in part, focus on Peter Strzok’s role in the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

Strzok is a former deputy to the assistant director at the FBI who was removed from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's staff after Mueller learned Strzok had exchanged anti-Trump texts with a colleague.

House investigators previously told Fox News they have long regarded Strzok as a key figure in the chain of events when the bureau, in 2016, received the infamous anti-Trump “dossier,” which launched a counterintelligence investigation into possible Russian meddling in the election.

“This was a routine scheduling error after the dates were switched on an internal email that we are happy to provide the committee,” a Justice Department official told Fox News. “The FBI regrets the error, and we look forward to making both witnesses (the alleged FBI handler for Christopher Steele and McCabe) available prior to the Christmas recess."

bruceohr
Bruce Ohr Ohr was recently demoted from one of his two senior posts, Fox News has learned. (AP)
Steele is a former British spy who reportedly compiled a dossier of allegations about President Trump’s ties to Russia.

Fox News was told by those familiar with the matter that the intelligence committee is suspicious of the purported scheduling error. One source said they believe the schedule issue arose after Fox News' report Monday night on Department of Justice official Bruce Ohr.

Ohr was recently demoted from one of his two senior posts. Fox News reported that Ohr’s wife, Nellie Ohr, worked through last fall for Fusion GPS, which was behind the anti-Trump dossier.

The precise nature of Mrs. Ohr’s duties – including whether she worked on the dossier – remains unclear but a review of her published works available online reveals Mrs. Ohr has written extensively on Russia-related subjects.

“McCabe has an Ohr problem,” one congressional source said.

The supposition is that Justice Department officials realized McCabe would face questions about Ohr and he is not prepared to respond.

The committee is prepared to subpoena all Justice Department documents and records related to the scheduling debacle, the source said. The committee is also prepared to subpoena McCabe to compel his testimony later this week.

Some Capitol Hill sources have expressed reservations that McCabe could retire before various congressional investigators get to him.

BREAKING: Nellie Ohr, Wife of Demoted Justice Official in Trump Dossier Case Who Worked for Fusion GPS, Also Worked for CIA

December 11, 2017 by Kristinn Taylor

Nellie Ohr, the wife of demoted Department of Justice official Bruce Ohr, who worked at Fusion GPS last year when the firm was working for the Clinton presidential campaign compiling the controversial anti-Trump Russian dossier, is listed as working for the CIA’s Open Source Works department in a 2010 DOJ report.

The report lists Nellie and Bruce Ohr as expert participants along with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson. Bruce Ohr met secretly with Simpson last year, as well as dossier author Christopher Steele, according to a Fox News report last week.

Fox News’ James Rosen broke the exclusive news on Monday that Nellie Ohr worked for Fusion GPS while her husband held the surreptitious meeting with Fusion GPS last year.

HPSCI staff confirmed to Fox News that she was paid by Fusion GPS through the summer and fall of 2016.”

The Fox News report also notes Nellie Ohr “was described as a Russia expert at the Wilson Center, a Washington think tank, when she worked there, briefly, a decade ago. Patenaude’s The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (2002).”

A June 2010 report posted by the DOJ entitled, “Expert Working Group Report on InternationalOrganized Crime“, lists Nellie Ohr as a participant representing “Open Source Works” Bruce Ohr is listed, right above his wife, as “Chief, Organized Crime and Racketeering Section, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice” Glenn Simpson is listed as, “Senior Fellow International Assessment and Strategy Center”. (The Daily Caller reported the think tank apparently cut ties with Simpson earlier this year.)

Open Source Works was reported by the Federation of American Scientists in 2011 to be the Central Intelligence Agency’s ” in-house open source analysis component”.

Open Source Works, which is the CIA’s in-house open source analysis component, is devoted to intelligence analysis of unclassified, open source information…according to a November 2010 CIA report, Open Source Works “was charged by the [CIA] Director for Intelligence with drawing on language-trained analysts to mine open-source information for new or alternative insights on intelligence issues. Open Source Works’ products, based only on open source information, do not represent the coordinated views of the Central Intelligence Agency.”

But wait, it gets even better.

Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.

Simultaneously in October 2016 – Through the media in the past week we discover – Associate DOJ Deputy AG Bruce G Ohr, Nellie’s husband, is in direct contact with Christopher Steele, and the full dossier, along with secret meetings with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson.

Again, Timeline Recap:

♦April ’16 Clinton hires Fusion GPS
♦April ’16 Fusion GPS hires Christopher Steele
♦May ’16 Nellie Ohr gets HAM radio license.
♦June/July ’16 FBI Agent Strzok meets w/ Steele
♦June ’16 DOJ FISA request denied.
♦July ’16 FBI counterintelligence operation begins
♦Oct. ’16 Peter Strzok and Bruce Ohr meet w/ Christopher Steele
♦Oct. ’16 FISA request granted.

Last week U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras, the judge that appears to have granted Oct ’16 FISA request, is mysteriously recused *AFTER* accepting Mike Flynn plea in the first hearing.

No explanation is given for the recusal or why Judge Contreras waited until after the initial plea hearing.

It would be EXPLOSIVE if it turned out the October 2016 FISA warrant was gained by deception, misleading/manipulated information, or fraud as a result of the Russian Dossier; and exponentially more explosive if the dossier was -in part- organized by the wife of an investigative member of the DOJ who was applying for the FISA warrant; the same warrant that led to the wiretapping and surveillance of the Trump campaign and General Flynn, and was authorized by FISA Court Judge Contreras.

A co-founder of the opposition research firm Fusion GPS acknowledged in a new court document that his company hired the wife of a senior Justice Department official to help investigate then-candidate Donald Trump last year.

The confirmation from Glenn Simpson came in a signed declaration filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., and provided a fuller picture of the nature of Nellie Ohr’s work – after Fox News first reported on her connection to Fusion GPS.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on whether a new special counsel should be appointed to investigate whether the anti-Trump dossier was used in Russia investigation, says the president has 'great concern' over some of the conduct that has taken place and would like it looked at.

Her husband, Bruce Ohr, was demoted at the DOJ last week for concealing his meetings with the same company, which commissioned the anti-Trump “dossier” containing salacious allegations about the now-president. Together, the Fusion connections for Mr. and Mrs. Ohr have raised Republican concerns about objectivity at the Justice Department, and even spurred a call from Trump’s outside counsel for a separate special prosecutor.

Simpson’s statement shows Mrs. Ohr was indeed involved in the Trump research. He said bank records reflect Fusion GPS contracted with her “to help our company with its research and analysis of Mr. Trump.”

WIFE OF DEMOTED DOJ OFFICIAL WORKED FOR TRUMP DOSSIER FIRM

Further, Simpson said he disclosed to the House intelligence committee that he met personally with Bruce Ohr, “at his request, after the November 2016 election to discuss our findings regarding Russia and the election.”

Fox News first reported last week that Bruce Ohr had been demoted at the DOJ amid an ongoing investigation into his contacts with Fusion GPS. Evidence collected by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), chaired by Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., indicates that Ohr met during the 2016 campaign with Christopher Steele, the former British spy who authored the “dossier.” Additionally, as acknowledged in the court filing, he met with Simpson after the election.

On Tuesday, Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow called for the appointment of a separate special prosecutor to look into potential conflicts of interest involving Justice Department and FBI officials.

A group of House Republicans for months has called for the appointment of a second special counsel to probe certain Obama and Clinton-related controversies, something Attorney General Jeff Sessions is reviewing.

When asked Tuesday about the Sekulow call, Sessions noted he’s already ordered that review following the prior call from members of Congress.

“I’ve put a senior attorney, with the resources he may need, to review cases in our office and make a recommendation to me ... if things aren’t being pursued that need to be pursued, if cases may need more resources to complete in a proper manner, and to recommend to me if the standards for a special counsel are met,” he said, calling that the “appropriate” course.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

The Dems continue to eat their own. Now they've turned on Rosenstein Big Grin

Democrats are attacking Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s credibility after the Department of Justice released text messages showing a top FBI agent on both the Clinton email investigation and the Russia probe rooting for Clinton while he was investigating her and discussing an unknown “insurance policy” against Trump in case he won the election.

The pro-Clinton, anti-Trump messages were, ironically, discovered as part of an investigation into the DOJ and FBI launched by the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General (IG) in response to Democratic politicians demanding a probe into possible anti-Clinton bias at the FBI.

Democratic politicians and left-wing media have attacked Rosenstein’s credibility in response, claiming he should have blocked the messages’ release.

Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, one of 58 House Democrats to vote in favor impeaching Trump, attacked Rosenstein and the Department of Justice on the House floor on Thursday.

Raskin claimed the release of the text messages show “that there are people in the Department of Justice who apparently are cooperating with this effort to undermine the integrity and the strength of this special counsel investigation.”

The DOJ, Raskin argued, should have withheld the damning messages, which were exchanged on taxpayer-funded cell phones.

Raskin said “the key thing to understand is that all of those text messages are totally irrelevant” and claimed they were nothing more than political opinions.

Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Mother Jones on Wednesday that the messages “are being used for propaganda purposes.” She added: “I think there’s an ongoing effort to malign both Bob Mueller and the work that that Special Counsel Office is doing. They are grabbing at every single thing to try to demean him.”

The text messages go well beyond simple political opinions and are part of a larger pattern of bias on Mueller’s team.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley noted that some of the texts “appear to go beyond merely expressing a private political opinion, and appear to cross the line into taking some official action to create an ‘insurance policy’ against a Trump presidency.”

Benjamin Wittes, a staunch ally of former FBI director James Comey, claimed in a blog post that the text messages’ publication were part of “a partisan circus.”

Wittes is a close friend of Comey and has been one of his strongest public defenders since he was fired as FBI director. In May, Wittes relayed that Comey had “concerns” about Rosenstein as assistant attorney general. Now, as an internal DOJ investigation sheds light on a troubled FBI under Comey, Wittes is ramping up the attacks on Rosenstein.

“Rosenstein here has, at a minimum, contributed to that circus—at the expense of his own employees. In throwing a career FBI agent and career FBI lawyer to the wolves by authorizing the release to the public of their private text messages—without any finding that they had done anything wrong—he once again sent a message to his workforce that he is not the sort of man with whom you want to share your foxhole,” Wittes wrote on his LawFare blog.

He added a warning: “The DOJ and FBI workforces will not forget that. Nor should they.”

Journalists circulated Wittes’ criticism of Rosenstein on social media and left-wing pundits echoed his points.

“These were government documents – texts on government devices. So the formal privacy claim is limited,” Talking Points Memo publisher Josh Marshall conceded, before arguing: “But let’s be honest. It’s still a massive breach of privacy. Political and personal chit chat and sounding off between two lovers?”

That the DOJ released some of the Strzok texts, Marshall argued, showed that Rosentstein had become “bent and deformed.”

Marshall didn’t note that the DOJ released just a small fraction of the Strzok-Page messages and redacted personal details in the messages it did release.

Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker, who has praised Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his handling of the Russia investigation, said last week that the Strzok scandal reflects “disarray” at the FBI “that is left over from the Comey era.”

In his testimony on Wednesday, Rosenstein said the DOJ “consulted with the inspector general to determine that he had no objection to releasing the material” before doing so. “If he had, we would not have released it,” Rosenstein said.

A report on the IG’s findings is expected sometime in the spring.

Democrats had previously praised both Rosenstein and the IG probe.

“I think Rosenstein is 100 percent honorable, and I think Mueller is a 100 percent professional,” Democratic Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse told Politico in June. “And you know, Mueller has to report to somebody. I’d rather have it be Rosenstein than anybody else I can think of in the department, particularly with [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions recused.”

Democrats were similarly more receptive to the IG’s probe when they suspected anti-Clinton bias at the FBI.

“In our committee one of the things that we say is that we have integrity, and of all the organizations that we have, the FBI is the one that we must have trusted,” Democratic Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings told reporters in January following news of the IG probe.

“And I think this investigation by the IG, I don’t know what it will reveal, but you know I think we need to go through that process, because if we’re not careful we will reach a crisis of legitimacy with regard to the very fabric of our country and the fabric–when I say the fabric, I’m talking about organizations like the CIA, FBI and others.”
