Wuhan-virus thread for the optimists: Step inside to seek or share inspiration
My boss is in Germany and has been home with his family for the past few weeks. We just started working from home, Tuesday afternoon. He is an awesome boss and I am very proud of him. He posted this over on LinkedIn, much to my surprise.

From my company today...

E&S Employees:

I am pleased to announce that we are donating excess masks, gloves, and gowns to local hospitals that are in desperate need of personal protective equipment to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.  This equipment is in excess of our needs and is largely left over following a transfer of supplies from Montreal when we closed that facility 3 years ago. We will, of course, maintain an adequate supply and reserves for our own needs, but the medical needs are critical and this donation will help protect the first responders, doctors, and nurses who are on the front line.   Thank you in particular to the several employees who proposed this action.

Thanks,
Steve Harris

Thanks for those that have shared what they have and keep the encouraging stories or opinions coming.

Nice post. There are silver linings to this cloud, and the sun will shine again. Both the wife and I are in health care, so jobs very secure, a bunch of new gun owners perhaps realizing the 2nd amendment is a good thing, more contact with children to influence thought and behavior, more family time and catch up on all those back burner projects

Today is my wife’s birthday. We usually go out to eat, but instead we went and picked up food from a local establishment and came home. Stopped by DQ and picked up a cake. As a teacher with 12-year-old twins, we’ve allowed them their “spring break” with down time and such, but informed them we will be doing some schoolwork next week. Our district has held off with online material because a lot of the stuff that people have been putting out on social media doesn’t take into account any student with learning disabilities. My BIL in CA was shocked because his daughter has been doing lessons all week...none of it vetted by the school, so, essentially, they are breaking the law...but I doubt they care.

I share that because I care what instruction I provide to my students of all ability.

Anyway, for as much as this current day and age has handed us, I’m grateful my wife is celebrating. A little over a month ago she wasn’t feeling well and was out of state for work. She barely made it home and went directly to the ER only to have her appendix rupture an hour later. She was hospitalized for a week and then spent the next two recovering. For a short time it was touch and go. She’s fully recovered, but I felt pretty helpless and worthless as all I could do was watch her heal while maintaining everything else around us. It was trying, but it made us stronger.

As Tony said in his OP, God has a plan...we might not always understand it, but this isn’t his first rodeo.

Wishing everyone well...

Great post. Thank you.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Still taking it in stride, but my wife and her mother when out shopping for a bit, then came back here for dinner.

Uneventful , usual evening, except when my M-I-L breaks out that all her friends (this woman is 81 years old) are calling it the WuChina flu. Well, it sounded like she said vagina flu. We both gasped, Then broke down in tearful laughter as she's not like that at all.

My wife and I were out driving around today, noticing a large increase in the number of families at parks, going on walks etc. Before all this madness, it seems like most people were rushing rushing rushing. Now, things have slowed down, and I suspect people are reconnecting with what is really important.

My in-laws live in a small mountain village. My FIL is legally blind from dry macular degeneration. My MIL is frail, suffers from bad knees and bouts of diverticulitis. We called them to make sure they had enough food. They told us they were going to the small country market in the village. Later that afternoon the MIL calls to say once they got to the market a man and his young son helped them shop and put items in the cart sometimes doubling the items. When they went to checkout the stranger paid for everything. He would not leave his name and the clerks didn’t know. A random act of kindness that did wonders for my in-laws. last year in the same market someone paid for my items and left before I could thank them. I then paid for the next persons groceries to keep it going. Acts like this tell me that there are still wonderful decent humans and it gives me hope we will get through this.

Making some REAL progress on a project I'd been putting off for YEARS. I've made some significant progress on the built in the last few days.

Installing that crown molding to the top of that center upper media cabinet ought to be a real pain in the butt, but wrestling that monster with just me and the wife would have been a real bear. Sooooo... I just so happened to have some help available even though I wasn't done installing trim so I took the help and got it done.

The kids were afraid that the power and internet would be off until tomorrow, they were quite happy that I got it all back up and running even in a temporary configuration.

This is the base plan, some of which has evolved without an updated drawing, but this will give you and idea of what it's going to be when completed.

Terrific thread!

Yesterday, I learned that a local BBQ company was going to be set up at a nearby school, handing out free BBQ to those in need. No one even had to get out of their car; just form a line and drive through the school's bus lane to pick up a free meal.

I'm not in need, so I didn't line up with the cars that were there, but I parked and went over and handed one of the pit bosses a $20. They needed to be appreciated.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Up here in NW Montana, a group of us business folks have pooled our resources and are spending our time delivering food and other supplies to those in need.
We are using our wholesale distribution channels (most of them are in the restaurant biz) to reduce the burden on the retail chain.

This is a dry run for a "real" pandemic that is both highly contagious and highly lethal. Imagine a cross between Wuhan and Ebola. Yep, this is a dry run.

I know I am reconsidering some things I need to hoard more.

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People again must learn to work, instead of living on public assistance. ~ Cicero 55 BC
