You must have mean coyotes down south. We have lots of them and their big cousins (wolves) up here and they're not that scary.

They run in large packs of 15-20. If they are hungry enough, you might get the first 3 or 4, but his kin folk are gonna have you for a snack. We've seen them take down cows, so a human, even an armed one, against a determined pack, the odds are not in your favor.

I live next to an 80 acre open space with at least one pack. Now that it gets dark this early, I carry my P229, with laser grips when I walk the dog every night. I don't expect I will need to shoot, but I would rather have my pistol and not need it. . . I also carry a Surefire 6P so that I can shine it at them in an attempt to scare any critters off before pulling the pistol.

Oh, and I am walking an 85 pound Rottweiler.

Its only a hill, if you think its a hill. . .

Since this is a theoretical confrontation, I'd have to go with my theoretical G-18 w/ three 33 round magazines (Stuffed down my pants 'to be discrete') filled up with Hydra-Shoks because coyotes are quick so I'd need to spray the forest...Unless there's a full moon, then we might need to go to that other discussion about Werewolf ammunition...just in case...

I've handled coyote problems with everything from a 22WM through 12 gauge OO to 50-70 (that was FUN!).

For discreet purposes, I'd think any 9mm or larger handgun that you can carry concealed would do the trick. G19, G23, G32, G30SF, any of the above would do for me. I wouldn't worry about capacity too much, most 'yotes I've dealt with are stealth-hunters and cowards - the first shot is likely to scatter the pack like a covey of quail. If you can get a "double" you'd have to be right on the money with some fast shooting...

Regards,

Kevin

Knowing that I'm going into an area where there is a high likely hood of crossing paths with them: Well, I have my G26 with 3 spare mags (2 are +1) so total that would be 44 rounds of Rem. Golden Sabers and Fed. Hyrdoshocks.

If they make it to me after I've exhausted all 44 rounds or I drop the pistol then it's hands on. Pull out the Kershaw and start going all crazy.

I think though that after a few pops from a pistol they'll scatter.

There is a reason why in quite a few states there is no closed hunting season for coyotes.

Ok, here's what I'd take Para, to be "discreet" as you say: 1) a Beretta 92 on my right thigh with two spare 15 round mags, all loaded with 127 gr +P+ Rangers, 2) a Sig p230 BUG in my left-hand back pocket with two spare 7 round mags running 90 Gr. Rangers, 3) my trusty Colt Python with 125 Gold Dot HPs on my right hip with two spare HKS speedloaders. And to top it off, 4) a short-barrelled mossberg pump shotgun with a pistol grip hanging in an Andrew's Narc shotgun shoulder sling, and a full-body bandoler slung over opposite shoulder with 50 rounds of 2-3/4 inch, low-recoil 00 buck. All this is covered with a long winter coat. The coat is wool, as is my all-wool Filson fedora hat. You've got to have a little style you know when dealing with that many zombie coyotes at once. If it were just one or two zombie dogs, the python would be the way to go, if you wanted to take them on with style. I would also carry an 8-oz flask loaded with whiskey, to help wind down and celebrate after killing every last one of the bastards. Oh yea, and don't forget the steel-toe boots, for kicking a few after they receive a bullet a little off-center but are still coming. Oh yea, the shotgun has the minimum 18-inch barrel.

So what have I forgotten ?

When hunting down in Richland, GA, I could kill one or two at 400 yards before they'd scatter.

They absolutely mess up deer, quail and turkey hunting.

Even a bobcat doesn't stand a chance against a pack of them.

Now here up at my place, my neighbors got themselves a Jenny Ass to kill them and I just shoot them with the AR.

I absolutely won't go outdoors without at least a .38.

Eek

SIG P220 with 200 gr +p Gold Dots. (you said no long guns, right?)

Best case scenario, I shove a Quarter Pounder with cheese into the nearest fat kid's back pocket, run for cover, then unleash mag dumps on the pack as they feed on big boy.

SIG P229 in .357 SIG. Normally carry 37 rounds (13 in the gun, 2 spare 12 round mags). I usually keep 4 loaded mags in the car. That would add up to 85 rounds. 5 extra in case I miss. Big Grin

Of course there is always the pro-active course, hunt them. An AR would do.

I use a different gun, but that's what I do when there is a report in my area.

From my current toys?

Hmmm, probably my G34 with Gold Dots, but the XD45 tactical would be hard to pass up too.

Given how the situation described is becoming more and more dire, perhaps anything I could point at my temple fast enough would do.

This is a tough one. Normally, were I walking in the woods I'd be inclined to carry a revolver but knowing that there was a roving pack of rabid, vampire-zombie coyotes would inspire me to carry .357 SIG in an auto. It would be a Sig P229 with Mepros, no rail. Load me up with two extra mags, "high" capacity. I'd feel pretty confident with that setup.

I'd just like to take a moment to thank Para and ASG for the first really good laugh I've had in weeks. Smile

From personal experience hunting yotes, the pack will scatter after the first shot. I took out three packs over a 5-day period. It took that long simply because after the first two shots/kills, the rest of the pack would scatter. Eventually however, they surprisingly returned to the same spot. It varied in time from about a half hour to half a day. I would think any quality pistol with at least one extra mag would be fine for any predatory pack.

Sorry I used to work at Central and 4th, south of central is the Ghetto, even crak dealers dont go down there. They dont call is cocaine key for nothin!

As for what gun:
FN5-7 can I really be the first guy to think of this. A rifle round in a pistol with a big capacity. Sounds like the money aswer to me.

6 to 10 coyotes? yep
175 rabid Zombie Coyotes? bring it!
80 or so steroid-fed trained killer lhasa apsos? It just gets better and better...

This _possibly_ may be overkill, but honestly, isn't overkill way better than underkill?
(accept my apology for using the words 'honestly' and 'way better' in the above sentence)

Understand that while utilizing the following, I cannot be responsible for the elimination of slum neighborhoods, meth-infested single wide trailers and senior government bureaucrats, so there isn't a downside.

First (not me btw, just a pathetic stand-in)...

Next...

Finally...

If it's good enough for Ash...it's good enough for me. Could even cut me up some coyote steaks on the spot.
