It seems that in the suburbs west of Atlanta, out Douglasville way, a pack of coyotes has been seen roaming around, and have exhibited aggressive behavior.
That got me to thinking- let's say there is a wooded park adjacent to your neigborhood, and you walk it's meandering trails each day. Your state laws allow you to carry concealed, and you are armed on your treks. You are aware of the reports of the coyotes in the area, and you base your choice of handgun on this knowledge. What do you carry? Myself, I think I'd have to go with my G20SF and three 15 round mags loaded with Silvertips. My S&W 317 3" in an ankle holster, loaded with eight CCI High Velocity solids, would serve as a last ditch bug. You're looking at anywhere from 6 to 10 coyotes. Sorry, no long guns. You have to be discreet. |

Coyotes aren't big. You won't likely have to shoot more than one of them before they scatter, and they are hard to hit as they are small and really quick.
I'd say G17 or G19 with a gold dot JHP. I think it would be pretty hard to hit the buggers with a handgun when they were all wound up. If i didn't need CCW, i'd say a 12ga. Karma? Karma is just justice without the satisfaction. |

We have them around here, on an individual basis havent seen them "Pack Up" but I have seen dogs do it.
I have used a S&W 65 3" but I would rather have had my Glock 22 or Sigpro 9mm. Coyotes are not "supernatural" and I will trade flat shooting and mag capacity for excess power of bullet diameter. [Grandpa always said,"If all you got is a stick, don't go around pokin' the Bear."] |

I think KevinCW is right, except I would carry a SIG and not a Glock. 9mm is certainly enough for what are essentially medium sized dogs, and I suspect once the first shots and the howls of the first wounded coyote rang out, they'd scatter. There used to be a pack living in an old abandoned vineyard where I used to walk the dog I had back then. He was a lab / shepherd mix mutt mix, about 65 lbs., and they wouldn't come near him even when he wandered pretty far away from me. And this was in CA, where the coyotes had to know I was unarmed. _______________________________________________________________________________ “Stand your ground. Do not fire unless fired upon. Seriously...any handgun would be sketchy against a small band of little wild canines in the rare event they'd attack. I shot a rabid raccoon with my 226 once. It wasn't moving that fast, and it still took me 5 or 6 shots to put it down. I'd go with capacity...my G19 with a few 15-rounders. ______________________________________________________ Fighting apostrophe abuse worldwide since 1967. |

Shoot the one that looks the bravest. The others will run. They aren't like the north vietnamese army or ants. The gunfire will scare the hell out of them becasue the prey is now fighting back.

Wish I still had my Ruger SP101 .357 but I only have 9mm's, so I'd have my P6 ready to roll with 3 magazines.

If my experience while hunting them is any indication, when you shoot the first one, the others will unass the area with rapidity.
Any high capacity 9mm would work well. Typical coyotes weigh 40 pounds or so. It won't take a 10mm to put one down. |

OK, these are rabid coyotes, really pissed off. Pretty close to Zombie Coyotes.
You just had a bacon cheeseburger and you smell like meat. Your shirt is the very same color as their favorite chew toy. You get the idea |

Something in 9mm with a big mag. Take a dog with you. Not a fat ugly woman mind you but a canine type dog.

I'd not change my normal carry of 226 and 19 124gr. Gold Dots. They're coyotes not cyborg black bears so I think the 10mm is overkill, unless that's your normal carry.
If I had the S&W 317 I'd probably pull that on the coyotes first though. |

Does it have to be a concealable firearm then? Do they make any concealable belt fed weapons? Karma? Karma is just justice without the satisfaction. |

Large packs of coyotes are common around my house. The other night I saw and HEARD a pack of them chasing a dog. It was LOUD!
So, having two young daughters, I think about this quite a bit. Plus- I like to take walks at night. I no longer have my G20, but that does seem appropriate. My 226 will have to suffice. I think, as another poster put it, they'd scatter with little prompting. So one 147 gr. Golden Saber should do the trick. But there's 17 more rounds if I need 'em. If I'm out walking by myself at night in no particular hurry- maybe my SW 610 would come along. |

OK, we've got coyotes that routinely cruise through my neighborhood. We've got the riverbed a couple of blocks behind the house, open desert to the north and a couple of greenbelts running through the neighborhood.
My normal "dog walking" gun is a Smith 642 in the pocket. I don't expect trouble from them as they are generally more afraid of people than people are afraid of them. If I did have one or a pack acting aggressively, I'm pretty sure they would scatter at just the sound of gun fire, let alone one of them going down. Even in Arizona, I'm sure some soccer mom would freak out and call Sheriff Joe if I went on my neighborhood dog walks with an AR-15 or an 870 slung over the shoulder. Realistically if I feel the need to "uparm" from coyotes in the neighborhood, I'd carry my Dan Wesson Razorback 1911 in 10mm. |
