Impressive photos in article.

“The US Air Force has dropped 40 tons of laser-guided bombs on what it called an 'ISIS infested island' in Iraq.

F-15 and F-35 jets were used to bomb Qanus Island, which sits in the middle of the Tigris River in central Iraq, in order to destroy hiding places for jihadi fighters.

Colonel Myles B Caggins, spokesman for Operation Joint Resolve, tweeted: 'Here’s what it looks like when US Air Force F15 and F35 jets drop 36,000 kg of bombs on a Daesh infested island.'

Daesh is a derogatory Arabic term for ISIS…”

If they had just let that island keep filling up with terrorists it would have eventually flipped over and drowned them all....

I would have been a lot more impressed if a dozen B2s had unloaded right there, but I suppose the F35 drivers like to have a bit of fun sometimes.

At first I thought, "Huh...40 tons of bombs doesn't sound like enough". Calculating that each laser-guided bomb weighs 500 or 1,000 pounds, that would be only 160 or 80 bombs, right? But then I saw the strip of land they called an "island" and determined every bomb probably fell within 100 yards of each other, blanketing the entire area. Then I thought, "Yeah...that should do it". And to RichardC's post, yes...what did this accomplish in the long-term fight against ISIS? Looking for that carpet bombing activity with B-1's, B-2's, and B-52's wingtip to wingtip... Smile

So, the overpressure should take care of what the actual blast doesn't take care of? I agree with the, "seems like a good start."

While looking like the grande finale of a fireworks show, it's not as effective, efficiant or econimical to carpet bomb. The % of target(s) affected is much less and a wide swing in the %.

Precision weapons are in high 90s% of targets rendered scrap.

Every one of those munitions had a name on it.

Carpet bombing is as to shooting as is "supressive fire". Precision weapons are snipers.

"Authorities said they dropped the bombs on the island to 'disrupt Daesh the ability to hide in the thick vegetation'. "

We dropped 40 tons of laser-guided bombs on grass and bushes???

Maybe dropping DC-10 tankerful of Roundup® and a C-5 load of Monsanto-suing lawyers in wingsuits on the island would have been more cost effective?

No flight, the Iraqi SF dudes on the ground moved in to assess. I'd like to know the BDA as well (if any).

Slight drift - How can we get word to the daesh that ALL of our munitions, from the biggest bombs to the lowly 9mm rounds, are manufactured in pig slaughtering facilities?

It might give them something else to ponder when there is incoming....
