I know a lot of people on this board are quick to shit on Austin as a liberal dump full of hippies and Cali transplants. All but lost is what they would have you believe about the whole city. I often take exception to this blanket assumption, as I am sure many of you have witnessed. Today I present the following to give you all a little hope. On this day when kids across the country were supposed to walk out of school like sheep to parrot the talking points they have been force fed, the 2500 students plus faculty and staff of my kid's high school stood at attention and honored Marine Corps First Lieutenant Matthew Ryan Vandegrift, who was killed in action on April 21, 2008, for whom their school is named.

This is valor day, an annual event but not the only demonstration of pride and respect from these teens and the staff of their school. At every home football game a wounded warrior is honored on the field before the entire stadium rises for the anthem. Yes sir, right here in Austin Texas there is a public school that still teaches respect, patriotism and the value of duty and valor. So next time you hear that Austin is lost just remember the 2500 kids that stood today to honor our country and one of it's heroes.

It looks like it is in Indian Country out in the hill country northwest, not down in Hippy Hollow proper. Probably still have a bunch of bitter clingers out there still.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

And the little critters weren’t walking out to protest gun violence? Wow!

That means so much more to have a school named for a marine who died in action.

And it's a great tradition to honor him annually. It's a great teaching moment.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

THIS is the America I know and love. Now if we can just get the news to cover this, instead of the garbage protests.

In full agreement with this. And it is heartening to see this in at least on public school in this country.

I love it. This is the America we know and love. It lives, we just need to keep building and caring for it.

TXJIM, you need to encourage their ROTC leader to get their MidwayUSAFoundation account started. Free matching money for their shooting team.
