Johnson is fascinating, but I can't support his politics. He may have thought he was helping, but he was wrong. Socialism doesn't help.

Understood, but the point of resurrecting this thread with the pictures and commentary from the F-105 pilots was to further illustrate how totally misguided Johnson and “The Whiz Kids’” Vietnam war policy, tactics, and leadership was. I don’t disagree that FDR’s New Deal started us down the road to socialism, and that we’re not likely to ever reverse the damage he did...BUT, at least it seems to be true that Roosevelt’s conduct of the War is generally accepted as competent.

Johnson’s conduct of the Vietnam War wasn’t incompetent, it now appears to have criminally sacrificed the lives of many of the 58,000 Americans, killed on the altar of some sort of attempt to send our military to war so hamstrung with his idea of a politically correct war, that it is impossible to estimate how many died unnecessarily.

Might that be because the US came into the war in a full blown, no holds barred determination to prevail, whatever it took, to unconditional surrender?

None of this “let’s try a little of this, and a little of that, don’t be too hard on anyone, someone may get mad.”

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

The triumvirate of Johnson/McNamara/Westmoreland with a heavy dose of Gen Taylor, were the misguided, out of depth heads of that era. It wasn't until Nixon came to office, Abrams replaced Westmoreland at MAC-V and Colby became head of CIA did things turn-around but, by then it was too late.

My mom was absolutely certain that LBJ had JFK killed so he could ascend to the Presidency.
