If you haven't seen the HBO movie "LBJ", its worth watching if you can. I was in my teens during the LBJ years. It was interesting to watch, while remembering all of the history of that time. Love him or hate him, he was a masterful politician who changed the political landscape forever.

LBJ was absolutely corrupt. He directly solicited a bribe from my father for a contract to install mechanical gates on government lands.

Though my father owned the patent for the gates, he declined. He told me this was one of those things that would not end well.

Kind of restating the point I made originally, I hold Johnson and his Great Society responsible for the destruction of especially, The African-American family. That said, families of all colors were diminished by Great Society programs which rewarded single mothers, and made fathers not just unnecessary, but a liability. These programs grew to such an extent that there are women whose “job” is producing fatherless children. That’s my take anyway

I absolutely agree. Saw an interview of Larry Elder by Dave Rubin a few days ago; Larry Elder thinks that is THE greatest problem in America, and ascribes it directly to the "War on Poverty" and "Great Society" programs.

The reality of socialism is for gov't to serve self under the guise of serving the people, which always involves dishonesty.

Chuck Finley's list of Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Jimmy Carter, BHO are probably the top five US Presidential socialists. I think LBJ and BHO may have been the most overtly and covertly corrupt of the group.

He also signed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 which opened the floodgates for immigration that we are paying dearly for now.

Way back when I was in Junior High (late 1950's), Texas public schools taught a required course in Texas History. Our teacher was a big fan of LBJ, to the point of obsession. Her surname was Taylor, which was Lady Bird's maiden name. She had had her own name changed to Lady Bird, and named her two daughters Lynda Bird and Lucy Baines. Sick.

Yes... I agree.
Socialism destroys countries. It's the opposite of the ideal of freedom this country was founded on.

While I enjoy hearing the personal stories and remembrances from JALLEN of the young LBJ, and his skill as a political operator, I think they make it even clearer that Lyndon Baines Johnson was among the worst Presidents in our country's history.

It was his skillfullness, guile, and cunning that enabled him to accomplish so much in a relatively short period of time. From the destruction of the family through dependency to the open-borders policies following the Immigration Act of 1965, no politician has done more to harm this country. Most of what is wrong with our country can be laid at his feet. He was far more impactful than either Jimmy Carter or BHO.

My favorite reason to hate LBJ is Medicare/Medicaid.

A lot of people have no idea that the only reason our health care systems got to the point that they have (Obamacare included) is because of Medicare/Medicaid. Once .gov became the single largest purchaser of health care, the whole industry went to hell. Artificial economies (particularly those that are centrally planned) never work.

IOW, he knew how to get things done that he wanted done.

Every President is under pressure to accommodate the needs and wishes of a certain constituency.

Pressure for Civil Rights legislation had been building for years, decades. Kennedy wanted to do something really meaningful, but he was impotent (in this way anyway.) when it came to working with Congress. Johnson knew how to get it done.

That seems to be the thread through Johnson’s activities. He figured out how to accomplish what he wanted, despite opposition. Like Eisenhower said, "Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it."

Those who supported what he wanted done admired him, character flaws notwithstanding. Those who opposed what he wanted done, didn’t.

He got where he was with the Progressive policies of FDR, Wilson before that, and he was able to sell it to enough voters, for awhile.

Went to Congress a poor teacher and came home a millionaire. Harry Reid had a good role model.

LBJ created the modern day ghetto.

Before his time, blacks had a much higher employment percentage, married households, etc. Now the bullshit that is in Oakland, Compton, etc., LBJ was one of the architects.

Lair. He sent 100's of thousands of draftees to Vietnam which divided our nation.

During WWII LBJ was in the Navy and a plane he was in transporting him and others in the S.Pacific had to make a quick lamding on an deserted island. After a few days they were rescued and LBJ got a medal, the others nothing.
The planes name was the Swoose Goose piloted by a guy named kurtz. He named it after his new born daughter Swoosie kurtz.
