Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said some 60 letters were sent out to registered owners of .40-caliber handguns, asking them to voluntarily submit their weapons for testing on Saturday and Sunday at the Okfuskee County Courthouse at Okemah.

Brown said 40 of those owners showed up with their guns, which were fired outside the courthouse.

She said about five owners contacted the OSBI to say they no longer owned the weapons, although they did provide the names of the new owners.

“We’ll be checking on them,” Brown said, as well as the 15 or so registered gun owners who did not show up for the test firings.

The fact that the OSBI is looking for a .40-cailber handgun is the newest revelation into the murders of Skyla Jade Whitaker, 11, and Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13.

Both were shot several times and left for dead on County Line Road, about four miles northeast of Weleetka.

Two guns were used in the killings, though authorities never would identify the caliber used until now.

Brown would not identify the other caliber of bullet which was used in the slayings.

While a Federal gun registry isn't allowed (supposedly, anyway), many states in fact have them. While it is certainly possible, the odds are that the shooter is not a registered gun owner.

There's no way I'm voluntarily turning over a gun for testing; warrant required, thank you.

This is wrong for a few reasons.

No one is going to submit their gun if they used it in a crime or think it was used. Come on what a waste of time and money. This is because they have no good leads and want to look like they are doing something but instead they are wasting resources.

What happens with the test data. If the gun is found to have not been used where does the data go.

Once the state determines the make of the gun, the manufacturer can tell the state which distributors got those guns. Then the distributors can tell the state which stores got the guns. Then the stores can check their records and tell the state which buyers bought those guns.

Or am I missing something?

This actually may be worse than just talking to LE during an investigation.

Guess that the 40 that showed up never watched that video... NEVER speak with the police.

No offense to officers - just not gonna do it.

this is definitely stoopid. the reason have already been enumerated. these 'volunteers' are just lining themselves up to be chosen for blame when the trail to the real killers goes cold, as it seems it might have already.

and you guys are right, the whole 'voluntary' thing... BULLSHIT. 'checking up on them' means that they are now serious suspects, simply for owning .40 cal handguns and choosing to stand by their Constitutional Rights.

Sounds like the DNA crap they did here when we had the Baton Rouge serial killer. They were taking DNA samples from all these white males. The serial killer turned out to be black.
