I've found it's really trial and error. I tried many and eventually settled on a cream soap.

I would rotate between Col. Conk Glycerin soap and some Country Uncle stuff that was half soap half glycerine. The last couple years life's been hectic and I've been lazy so my straight razors haven't seen much use.

Col. Conk Bay Rum or D.R. Harris Lavender.

The D.R. Harris lathers up faster.

I like Cella and Proraso White. Between those two I've never felt the need to try any of the expensive ones (even though I'm sure I'd like them.)

Another vote for Tabac. Lathers good in the hard water here, and I love the smell of it.

I'll second Tabac, especially the smell. Though when my skin needs some help and especially in winter months I use Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap.

Meißner also puts out some incredible shaving soaps.

I liked what I was looking at on that website, until I realized the razors use Gillette blades, the quality of which have taken a real nosedive the last few years. I still use them, only because I haven't been able to find anything better, and haven't had a decent shave since they moved production to Mexico.

As to the soap, I'll have to check out some of them next time I'm at a drug store. The last one I bought was many years ago, made by Colgate and nothing special.

I just use their creams. I shave with my father's old Shick injector. I have a few DEs and a straight razor. The old single blade injector is my favorite. And the blades last months.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

I don't know how you guys do this every day.

I suppose that there is something somewhat romantic about lathering up a brush and scraping away the whiskers, but...nope. Not for me. Trimming the beard once a week is about all I'll tolerate.

Definitely second this recomendation. Col. Conk makes a very reputable product. I use the bay-rum and the almond shaving pucks.

After trying several mug soaps I found Creamo shaving lotion and it's better than everything else imo.
