You can't let go, you are harnessed onto the kite.

I've whatch them endanger beachgoers at Panama City Beach until the safety officers show up and stop them.

It's all and fun if there are no people on the beach for the kite strings to lacerate.

No sympathy from me. HE wanted to act in such a manner. HE deserves what he got. "Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid". Just like the car surfers, street racers and so on. Time wounds all heels.

People that get gored/stomped while running with the bulls = "Sorry but while highly unlikely to happen, it does and it's a risk. You'll be back next year?"

People who do extreme sports = "You knew the risks but took all reasonable precautions you could to minimize them. Hope you get better."

Dumbsh!ts who kite surf in hurricanes = "You are the dumbest son of a b!tch around. I'm surprised you aren't a bag of bones after hitting the brick wall but I'm glad you didn't die so I can ridicule you as someone who has the smarts of a day old bagel. Did I mention you were stupid?" I then give him a pity laugh for being an idiot and not dying because of his incredibly defective thought process. He's probably a product of public education.

what other possible outcome was he expecting?

I doubt if he'll be doing that again anytime soon.

Being blown hundreds of miles out to sea... IF the wind had been blowing in the opposite direction. Of course then the storm never would have made it to shore.

Yeah... I cannot fathom what he though was going to happen. The results would indicate that his plan wasn't that thorough.

This link has some more information on this guy. It seems that he was taken across a street were he could of been struck car. He had a emergency release on the harness, suppose panic prevented him from getting lose.

A vehicle would probably have had a little more give than the concrete apartment building that he flew into face first. I also suspect that he was... "stunned" from being slammed into the beach at significant speed. He was pretty much just along for the ride after that.

If you want to smoke, fine. If you want to do, heroin, go for it. The thing that really bothers me is when you strap yourself to a kite in a 60mph windstorm, you are also probably the kind of person who wants society to pick up your slack.
