This is not meant as sarcasm, but please list for me who you think at CNN qualifies as a 'journalist' who plays it straight. I ran the list in my head and couldn't think of a single person that would meet that description.

You have to get off the main page where all the political news is. If you look at the financial pages, the health pages, and the science/tech pages, there are some excellent journalists there doing great work reporting stories. Their political coverage is largely egregiously awful, but, as in life, not everything is politics at CNN.

I've got to quibble with you a bit here. It is not the job of the press to hold anyone to account, that is the mandate of the people. It is the job of the press to report, truthfully, always, so the people can do their job. Of course that doesn't get you laid by impressing the honeys in a beltway saloon or promoted because you 'told truth to power', but that's the job.

Don't make stuff up. For instance don't repeatedly, habitually, tell me that my senator is one of the most powerful people in Washington when anyone with eyes to see and wit to understand knows that she is one of the dumbest people in America (That would be Patty Murray)tell me what she has actually accomplished, anything, anything at all that rates all of this praise, there's your job Mr. man-bun reporter.

"holding to account' implies a legitimate authority. I think pols need to be held to account, but a degree in fake-news doesn't invest one with that authority. They, the press pukes, should either report the facts or turn to fiction, but since most of them can't write that's out, but at least look like you are trying.

And yes I think as they are currently functioning they are an enemy of the people, of truth, of justice and the American way of life.

It is routinely considered a function of the press in our constitutional system to "hold the government to account." I don't think that's at all controversial. While the press is not a branch of government and does not have specified powers under the Constitution, it is widely regarded as functioning as a check on those in power. That is why freedom of the press is in the First Amendment. Typically, restrictions on the press were those that favored the ruling class, preventing criticism or airing of grievances. The founding fathers wanted a press that could freely report on the government and the politicians. Hamilton thought of the role of the press as keeping those in power in line through fear of shame and embarrassment.

I think that most of them (journalist) don't think they are enemies of the people and think they are just "doing what's right." BUT in actuality - they are enemies of the nation.

they are fomenting discord and division. Remember the "good old days" when you could believe everything you heard on the national news ? And the news people would even keep a lid on things that they knew would hurt america if it got out. now days - who cares if it hurts the country, publish it anyway.

Like Walter Cronkite? Like Dan Rather? Like the New York behind-the-times, since practically forever> Remember the Maine anybody? Like all the reporters that piled on Teddy Kennedy's driving mishap (remember, silence can be a lie).

Oh, they don't like having this pointed out? Then, they should have done their job in an ethical manner. Don't point fingers at us when we state the fucking obvious.

They can't have it both ways.

In the vast sea of any voice, no.

But, the "press" has traditionally been a unique thing in our country. It was newspapers and pamphlets at the founding.

Those voices using a "press" were imbued with First Amendment recognition so as to allow enlightenment through news and opinion.

When it was once a special way of mass communication, it had a power and role to let the people think.

Yellow journalism has always been around.

In our time when every one of us can be an instant mass communicator, it seems that there are many enemies of the people - and many friends.

So much of hard news has been replaced by opinion that the traditional media needs to be evaluated with near the same skepticism of the basement blogger.

So, "journalist" isn't even a category that is readily recognizable by mere name anymore (CBS, NBC, ABC, & etc.).

Journalists, whether found on websites or television anymore are a seemingly rare commodity.

Maybe fake news stories or trends of stories are the enemy of the people but like drawing the line between regular pornography and obscenity, we may only know it when we see it. And, we don't all see it the same way and draw the same lines.

CNN's threat to President Trump that unless he played ball with them that CNN would run him down in all these competing foreign capitals seemed like CNN was nominating itself for "enemy of the people" status but everyday news banter seems to have a lot of counter-notions too.

True journalistic balance seems missing from coverage anymore. That seems to leave us with drawing lines wherever we will.

I cannot blame President Trump for trying to knock the established media off its historical pedestal when coverage is so slanted. I know about two scoops. You know about 2 scoops. Why? Of all the news, that became the news cycle and counter cycle. The media just gets lost but if not an enemy, any real journalist sidetracked by that kind of stuff does not seem like a journalist to me.

When I was growing up we had 30 minutes of news. Fifteen minutes of local news and 15 of national.

That was enough.

Today we have a 24/7 entertainment medium that hides behind the First Amendment. They have to fill all the air time. Everything is "breaking news."

Too many of them or perhaps most of them, don't report news they push an agenda. Even the most mundane story is skewed toward their liberal agenda.

I would say yes!
You Won’t Believe What Obama Did in South Africa

Wayne Root August 9, 2018 Commentary
Do you know what Obama did in South Africa?
You’re not going to believe it. It’s the biggest disgrace in the history of the U.S. presidency. But the mainstream media won’t say a word- it’s a total blackout.
This is (as Obama would say) a “teachable moment.”
90%+ of President Trump’s coverage by the U.S. mainstream media is negative. Terribly negative. Horribly negative. Remarkably negative. That same media adores and idolizes former President Obama. The difference in the way they are treated is remarkable.
Remember it was Obama who first separated illegal alien parents from children. The media said nothing. When Trump did it, he was a “Nazi” and racist. Suddenly it was compared to the Holocaust.
Remember when Obama used the IRS to go after conservative groups and conservative critics? I’m a witness. Obama’s IRS tried to destroy my life. Judicial Watch proved it was a political witch-hunt based on my conservative political beliefs. I was targeted, intimidated and persecuted because I’m a conservative. Judicial Watch can prove it. The mainstream media didn’t care. They refused to cover the story.
Can you even imagine if President Trump used the IRS to go after liberal critics, liberal groups, Black Lives Matter, or the NAACP? I can’t even imagine the protests, rioting, Million Man Marches and screams for the impeachment and prosecution of Trump.
That brings me to one of the most incredible examples in the history of the U.S. media. It happened in South Africa two weeks ago. You’re won’t believe what Obama did. Nor will you believe the mainstream medias has chosen to cover it up. But they did.
Anyone remember apartheid? That was the political and economic system of South Africa that saw blacks purposely kept in misery and poverty by the white minority. It was illegal for blacks to own property. This was a horrible, inhumane, evil system. Americans of all races and political ideologies should have been offended and outraged by apartheid.
But are you aware South Africa has a new version of apartheid? I’ll bet you’re not. No one in the U.S. media has covered it. No headlines this time around. As a matter of fact, not a word. To my knowledge, only one national TV or radio host in the country has been exposing this terrible new apartheid for months on end- yours truly.
Only because in my second career as a business speaker, I’ve lectured on entrepreneurship all around the world. I’ve spoken a half dozen times in South Africa. I’ve given speeches in front of thousands in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durbin. I’ve gotten to know the people of South Africa. I’ve made many wonderful friends for life.
That’s why I’ve been aware for months of this new apartheid. But this time it’s human rights and civil rights violations by the black majority of South Africa. This time it’s blatant discrimination, racism, and hate crimes by the black majority. This time it’s legal for blacks to steal the land of whites. This time it’s blacks murdering whites with impunity.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his ruling ANC (African National Congress) have made it legal to forcibly take land from white farmers and property owners. That was the first step.
Now comes the next radical step. The president and his Congress are changing the Constitution to allow the South African government to forcibly take any white person’s land, this time without any compensation. Pure theft. Because of the color of their skin, white families are left in poverty. Left homeless. Left without a livelihood.
Worse, the president and several of his political allies have threatened to murder white property owners who refuse to hand over their property. They actually said they have no plans at the moment for a “genocide.” The inference being that if white farmers and property owners put up a fight, the next step will be a genocide.
An emboldened citizenry is already taking matters into its own hands. A UK newspaper reports one white farmer is murdered every five days in South Africa. Hundreds of white land owners have been killed or badly injured in mob attacks since 2016.
Yet the world says nothing. The media says nothing. Politicians say nothing. Hollywood celebrities say nothing. There are no protests, or calls for boycotts. Hard to believe.
Enter Obama. The former US President recently accepted a speech in South Africa. He undoubtedly collected a fortune for that speech. That’s called “blood money.” Obama was paid with money tainted by racism, theft and murder. How badly does an ex-President need money? Why would he accept this money?
Worse, he didn’t use that platform to say a word about the new apartheid.
Worse yet, he stood on that stage next to the president of South Africa, lending him credibility.
Then, worst of all, he praised the president who presides over a country stealing white owned land, murdering whites and threatening genocide.
This could be the most disgraceful speech ever by a former U.S. president. Yet the media said nothing.
President Trump calls Don Lemon of CNN “dumb” on twitter. It creates a media firestorm. Trump “must be a racist.”
Obama praises the president of a nation murdering and robbing white people because of their race. No one says a word.
What Obama did in South Africa should the biggest news in America. The fact that you never even heard about it, tells you everything about the fraud, deceit and fake news of the mainstream media.

The left has always attempted to dominate the press and education. In my estimation they have destroyed education, and obviously dominate the media. They have succeeded in keeping a big percentage of the population ignorant. And it seems that their domination of the press is paying off for them. How else could anyone vote democrat? The good news to me is that I felt this way before 2016, yet DJT was elected anyway. There is hope afterall.

Any journalist who reports their opinion, and not facts, is an enemy of the people, and not, in fact, a journalist.

It is not a matter of Opinion over the facts as sometimes the facts are murky.

But, they, who make up the facts to suit their own agenda at the cost of a segment of our populace, in this case all people who do not think as they do, are the true enemies of the people.
