M.L. Baseball question
Could this happen?

Would it be possible for the world Series winner to have less points ( for the entire year) than the second or third or fourth place team?

example :
world series winner : 398 total score
2nd place : 410
3 rd place : 404

If you are talking about an accumulation of runs (points) for an entire season, then yes. I'm sure it has happened on numerous occasions. A team may not be scoring often, but may have superior pitching and defense, which allows them to accumulate more wins through the season. It isn't even always the "best" team that wins the WS. If my recollection is correct in 2010 the SF Giants made the playoffs via a wild card spot and went on to win the WS.

If you mean "runs scored," yes.

The winners may have won many low scoring games. Any others may have lost games in which they scored many runs.

most low scoring games are a sign of strong Pitching/defense etc. so having a bunch of runs may just mean the team is in a weak league/conference.

That's right. I was just simplifying the point for him.

In 2016 the Cubs won the series and were 3rd in runs scored.

In 2015 the Royals won and were 7th.

In 2014 and 2012 the Giants won and were 12th.

...and the Giants were 17th in 2010.

Which really illustrates the point...they had the pitching.

There are no points in baseball. There are no touch downs, no field goals, no 3 pointers...no additional scoring methods... there are ONLY runs. Also, in baseball you play until there is a WINNER. If a winner can be determined in 9 innings then fine...but if not then the two teams stay on the field, no matter how long it takes, no matter how many innings it takes, until a winner is determined...unlike several other sports there are no ties...and no clock (well, until recent years and the rules implemented to speed the game up).

The ONLY thing that matters in baseball (as well as several other sports) is your WIN / LOSS record. If you can win with 6 runs then great- fantastic, if you can win with 1 run then great-fantastic.

No doubt home runs/ runs are exciting, but it could be argued that lower scoring games demonstrate a level of proficiency in pitching and/ or defense...or maybe a better way to express this relationship is efficiency in winning...you were able to win in fewer innings with fewer runs (with less wear and tear on your players). Teams look to their strengths, attempt to minimize their weaknesses, while trying to find a way to match up to the opposing team and find ways to win...there is a beauty to baseball...a wonderment in how each team finds a way, a combination of the basic skills sets to try and find a way to win...ie the "5 tool" player. I love home runs, walk off runs, Grand Slams, bottom of the 9th 2 Outs Home Runs as much as anybody...but I prefer games/ scores from earlier in baseball history when games were played faster, there were more complete games pitched and lower run tallies determined the winner.

Baseball is a series sport and is based on stringing a series of wins together for success, over a very long 162 game (regular) season + post season playoff games ...it is essentially a marathon sport.

What part of sports based on Wins/ Losses is difficult to understand?
