A client of mine is wanting to ship a gun to himself to avoid flying with it. Can he ship it to an FFL in NH and then pick it up there after doing a background check almost like he did an online purchase?

He is telling me that as a non-resident of NH he can't purchase or pick up a handgun in the state.

He is a Florida resident but owns homes in both places. NH has yet to issue him a tax bill for his home this year.

Any ideas?? What about shipping to Sig Academy and taking a class then driving it home?

He's right. The FFL can only release a handgun to a resident of the state.

I’ve shipped guns to myself, in care of my dad...had to go to the UPS hub though-the stores are franchises and won’t handle guns.

Yes, he can ship it to himself.

"6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?

Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where
he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to
the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm. "

For handguns, taking it on the plane is a lot easier and cheaper than shipping it.

Why ship it to an FFL? Is there an NH law that requires this. It's his gun and unless something has changed he can ship it to himself. No FFL needed. No new background check as the gun is not changing ownership at least not in the eyes of the ATF or federal law.

FWIW I would just fly with it. Really less hassle then shipping it.

Take it with him.

He can only use UPS. FEDEX won't take shipments non-licensee to non-licensee and USPS is out by federal law. UPS is very expensive.

There are two possible reasons. One he’s connecting on a flight through the New York area or is flying into Boston. Transiting through either New York/New Jersey or Massachusetts with a firearm is a crapshoot.

If it is say a a SIG P series, I would suggest removing the slide, magazines, and barrel and shipping those with tracking. Take the stripped frame, comply with the TSA rules, and check it on the flight.

I have been thinking about this:
Shipping the assembled slide, grip frame and magazines of my P320 to my kid in NOLA next time I visit. And checking the FCU with my luggage. What stops me is trying to explain to a gun ignorant TSA dude that the tiny FCU is in fact a gun.

Different experiences in different airports. Departing KSBP, the gate agent has me sign an unloaded firearms card and hang around for a bit in case TSA has questions. KMHT was similar, but didn’t even have me wait. Said TSA would page me in the unlikely event they needed me. KPHX was a whole ‘nother rodeo. Gate agent escorted me and the bags to TSA and TSA had me open all lockboxes so they could check. In no case did they care about what parts were what with all the metal parts of two P320s in a nano vault.

I like the idea of shipping all the parts in a ‘normal’ box, then checking the stripped receiver in luggage.

One time I was compelled to fly to Maryland which is a "no go" state for non-resident CCW. So I shipped my handgun to a FedEx in a Walgreens in Richmond VA. Richmond was my ultimate destination anyway.

There is no transfer of ownership, so an FFL is not needed. Being an out of state resident, he wouldn't be able to pick it up there anyway.

Either ship it to a friend in NH or carry it in checked baggage on the flight with him. Checking and declaring the firearm is done every day and is no big deal.

Students routinely ship firearms on the flight they take to the Academy.

Shipping separatly means a pickup at the Fedex in Portsmouth. Nearest UPS in some distense away on Dover.

Not sure what CCW has to do with flying with a gun. I have flown in and out of BWI multiple times with a gun. Never had an issue. I know there are a few other members here who have done it many more times then I have.

Maryland has some strict gun laws for sure but simple flying in or out with a gun has never been a problem. Just put it in the trunk unloaded while driving here.

Sorry, old age kicking in. My flight was from St. Louis to New York and then to Maryland. From there my daughter picked me up and the final destination was Richmond, VA.

There was no way I was flying to NY with a gun and "screwed up" my original post about CCW.

It freaks folks out at first but the easiest and by far cheapest way is to just declare it in his checked luggage and fly with it.

Agreed. Fly with it. Ship ammo to yourself if you need quantity.
