Meanwhile, the fuckwit who woke up one morning and thought -'I know, we'll have a referendum to see how many want to stay in the EU and how many want to leave! That'll be interesting to see....' is standing around with his thumb up his butt wondering if he can't somehow put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Mr Cameron, I heartily wish you an enormous dose of the explosive shits combined with uncontrollable sneezing, for a start.

Tac, do you think a “hard” exit is now coming?

EU Tells Theresa May to Cancel Brexit

UK government setting stage for second referendum, Nigel Farage warns

Following the British parliament’s rejection of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal, the EU Council President, Donald Tusk, has told the country to stay in the bloc.

“If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?” the top EU official wrote on Twitter.

Frans Timmermans, the deputy head of the European Commission, EU’s executive arm, also advised the UK remain in the EU. Quoting British author CS Lewis he said: “We can’t go back and change the beginning, but we can start where we are and change the ending.”

Prime Minister May suffered a major political defeat after the parliament overwhelmingly voted against the Brexit deal. She lost the vote by 432 to 202, with 118 Conservative MPs rejection the deal negotiated with the EU. Sensing the opportunity, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has tabled a vote of no confidence in May’s government, a move that could end her premiership after just two and a half years in office.

According to the critics of the deal, May’s agreement will keep Britain subject to the jurisdiction of EU-run courts. Under the terms of the current EU membership, regulations imposed by Brussels dictate country’s trade, customs, and immigration laws. The British exit from the EU, in keeping with the outcome of the 2016 referendum, was suppose to change all that. May’s deal will “strangle British sovereignty and reduce us to a craven vassal state,” commentator Brendan O’Neill noted recently in The Spectator.

If London and Brussels fail to renegotiate the deal before the March 29 deadline, the country will leave the EU without an agreement on the terms of trade. In case of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit, the UK can continue to trade with the 27 member bloc in line with the pre-existing norms of international trade set up by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

If the no-deal scenario comes into effect, the EU will forfeit the $47 billion “divorce bill” slapped by its negotiators, a UK parliamentary report said.

Following the last night’s vote, the EU elite and the mainstream European media are running a fear campaign, painting a horror scenario in case of a no-deal Brexit. “If an agreement is not reached [before the March deadline], it will lead to the withdrawal without a deal with the union. In such a case, one must recon with chaotic outcome for the economy and other areas of life,” the leading German newspaper Die Welt declared. (Read here for Legal Insurrection’s take on a possible no-deal Brexit: Is UK Heading for a ‘No-Deal’ Brexit? December 21, 2018)

“The EU should prepare for the worst,” declared the German weekly Der Spiegel, “One should have no illusions: a segment of British lawmakers are fundamentalists, who are pursuing the Brexit almost with religious fervor.” The magazine complained that “the majority of the MPs, who are actually Brexit-skeptics, cannot come together without splitting their own parties and risking the anger of the voters incited by the [pro-]Brexit press.”

“Perhaps, Britain must undergo the catastrophe of a no-deal Brexit in order to come to its senses,” Der Spiegel concluded.

“Island of Losers,” read the headline in the German weekly Die Zeit. “The British exit will cause great damage to the EU. But the community is united like seldom before.”

German state media mocked the British government and parliament. “Britain’s political institutions have shown that they are not up to facing the challenges,” Deutsche Welle commented. “Brexit is likely the country’s greatest disaster.”

With President Donald Trump in the White House, the European political elite are fearful of losing a powerful member state to Brexit. “But it’s by no means assured that Europe will survive Britain’s departure,” the former German vice-chancellor Sigmar Gabriel warned on Tuesday. Adding that “Europe’s role in the world will be damaged in a way we can’t yet imagine. We’re getting a little foretaste in Washington, where the U.S. government wants to downgrade the EU’s diplomatic status.”

Given Brussels’ track record, one can not rule of an intrigue to keep Britian in the EU at this stage. According to the former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, the British government is setting the stage for a second referendum. “I think and I fear we are headed on a path towards delays and probably a second vote,” he told Sky News. “I fear we will get an extension of Article 50 and what you will hear is voices in Westminster pushing for a second referendum.”

Will the EU and the British establishment dare to steal the verdict handed down following the biggest democratic exercise held in the Island Nation’s history? Committing this day-light robbery to keep the British people subservient to an unelected elite in Brussels will not secure the continued existence of the EU. Holding the proud and defiant British people against their wishes will only hasten the bloc’s demise.

The UK has a strong hand with the threat of a no-deal Brexit. If they have the guts to play it…

“The former foreign secretary [Boris Johnson] said after Tuesday's devastating defeat, the Prime Minister should make a 'final offer' to the EU of a deal that strips out the border plan and withholds half the £39billion divorce bill until a trade deal is finalised.

Mr Johnson said he would be 'utterly amazed' if Brussels said no but insisted Britain would flourish even if it had to leave without a deal on March 29 - promising there would still be 'Mars bars' and other imports from Europe whatever happened…”

______________

“German business chiefs have warned that a no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic for their country.

The nation's supply chains and trade links are closely intertwined with Britain - sparking fears that its vital manufacturing sector will be badly damaged if the UK crashes out of the European Union without an agreement.

More than 750,000 jobs in Germany depend on its trade with the UK…”

I’m speaking from next to knowledge of the details, but I can’t help but think that the people of the U.K. will be orders of magnitude better off if they can ram a no deal Brexit down their government’s throat. 39 billion, 50 billion, whatever the number is, paying that to the E.U. for the privilege of bending over and being bound to E.U. laws with no input into those laws seems like an incredibly stupid idea.

I can only imagine that Ms. May negotiated such a horrible deal in hopes of generating another referendum. I almost wonder if the U.K. citizens have it in them to throw their own tea party? If I were part of the U.K. government trying to force remain, I’d be very particular about my security. Their citizens are not all doormats and at some point they may decide it is time to, “Get a rope!” That wouldn’t be pretty.

I hope that the U.K. politicians come to their senses and push on with a hard, no-deal, Brexit. Of course, then their politicians will actually have to do their jobs and govern. Who knows, maybe our legislature could actually learn something from them. Self determination is a beautiful thing and the U.K. citizenry may have seen enough stupidity from Brussels to demand it.

Second Referendum: Beware The Deception Around A "No Deal" Brexit

by Steven Guinness,

Engaging in double speak has become a routine means of communicating amongst politicians. Whilst obfuscation is used to confuse the public and distort their understanding of events (notably Brexit), occasionally a granule of truth winds its way into the narrative which serves to offer a more accurate picture of where members of parliament stand on an issue.

Brexit has dominated political discourse in the UK ever since the original referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU was announced three years ago. Most recently, we have seen an attempt by Conservative party ‘rebels‘ to remove Prime Minister Theresa May from office fail, the withdrawal agreement negotiated by May’s government comprehensively rejected by MP’s, and a subsequent vote of no confidence in the government defeated.

What these events have done is solidify the impression that parliament is at an ‘impasse‘ over Brexit. But as I have argued in previous articles, what this ‘impasse‘ is actually doing is creating the necessary conditions for a second referendum (a ‘people’s vote‘) to become a reality. Gradually all other options are withering away to leave going back to the ballot box as the only remaining solution. A referendum therefore assumes the appearance of being an organic occurrence rather than a premeditated outcome.

Here is how a referendum could find itself in the statute book in the next few weeks:

The next significant parliamentary event is Monday, January 21st, when Theresa May will make a statement to parliament outlining a ‘plan B‘ for how she proposes to gain approval for a revised version of her defeated withdrawal agreement. Whilst it is unknown what she will suggest, it is a safe assumption that it will exacerbate rather than quell division amongst MP’s.

The key aspect to whatever Theresa May puts before parliament is that it will be amendable, meaning MP’s can table amendments to the plan in an attempt to influence the next steps in the Brexit process. One of those amendments is expected to call for a second referendum. Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston, a supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, is due to table the amendment.

For it to be successful, three things need to happen.

Firstly, the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, is responsible for determining which amendments are selected for debate. Bercow, a supporter of the EU, has previously accepted amendments that allow parliament to assume more control over the legislative direction of Brexit. Thus it would come as no surprise if he chose an amendment that called for a second referendum.

Secondly, for the amendment to pass through the House of Commons, it would need to command the support of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party. Corbyn’s preference has been for a general election rather than a second Brexit referendum. But the defeat of his no confidence motion in the government has eliminated this option. Back in September last year, the Labour party voted to keep the prospect of a second vote ‘on the table‘ should attempts at forcing a general election fail. Now that they have, it is likely that Labour will soon adopt a ‘People’s Vote‘ as official party policy.

Thirdly, to gain a majority in the House, the amendment would require around twenty disgruntled Conservative ‘remainers‘ to support it. Again, this appears increasingly likely.

January the 29th is when MP’s will vote on Theresa May’s ‘plan B‘. It represents the first opening for a referendum to be called. If we surmise that over the next few weeks a second vote will officially be in the works, it would then become about what question parliament would put to the British people. This is the area in which politicians have been practising to deceive.

A proportion of MP’s are openly demanding that Theresa May rule out a no deal exit from the EU. One of them is Labour’s Chuka Umunna. Seen as the leading political figure behind the People’s Vote campaign, Umunna has consistently communicated via Twitter that to prevent no deal from happening, parliament must ‘extend Article 50 and give Brexit back to the people‘.

If you are wondering at this point what Umunna recommends asking the UK electorate a second time round, the answer might surprise you. Speaking to Sky News presenter Sophy Ridge this month, he advocated for the option of remaining in the EU, and also for a ‘hard‘ Brexit:

I do think you have to have an option that would please the likes of Peter Bone (Conservative supporter of Brexit), that is a hard Brexit so to speak.

Those two choices, in some way, shape or form, would need to be presented to the British people.

For some time now the term ‘hard Brexit‘ has been perceived as the UK dropping out of the EU with no withdrawal agreement in place.

Umunna is not a lone voice in advocating for a ‘hard‘ Brexit option. Over the months, former Prime Minister Tony Blair has called for a ‘clean break‘ choice on a future ballot paper, as have Gina Miller (founder of Best for Britain) and Conservative MP Justine Greening.

The Independent’s ‘Final Say‘ campaign also endorses a no deal option, whether parliament approves a withdrawal deal or not.

Then there is the man who conceived Article 50, Lord Kerr. Kerr recently appeared on LBC radio where, in regards to what the public could vote on, he told presenter James O’Brien:

Do they want the deal, do they want no deal crash out or do they want our existing deal with the European Union?

Kerr and Umunna are not strangers to each other. They shared a platform together back in November 2017 – on behalf of the anti Brexit group Open Britain – where Kerr proclaimed that Article 50 was reversible and that Britain could change it’s mind on Brexit at any stage prior to withdrawal.

The European Court of Justice have since ruled that the UK can revoke Article 50 unilaterally, but would still require the approval of all twenty seven member states in order to extend the deadline beyond March 29th.

Ask those calling for a ‘People’s Vote‘ their perspective on a no deal outcome, and they will tell you how it would be the height of irresponsibility. An eventuality that the House of Commons should in no way countenance. Why, then, does Chuka Umunna and company wish to see this option dismissed by MP’s, but presented as part of a referendum? It is a question that no broadcaster has thought to raise.

It should be obvious that by endorsing a ‘hard‘ Brexit option, it intensifies the risk of no deal rather than mitigates it.

The People’s Vote campaign continues to promote that the only way to prevent leaving the EU without an agreement is to consult the public. This is nonsense if we consider that in the event of a referendum, the electorate will likely be granted the option of leaving on World Trade Organisation terms. Sections of MP’s would view this option as reckless, but in my view the argument that ‘hard Brexiteers‘ need to have their voice heard in a referendum would win enough support.

As noted previously, Lord Kerr is on the Executive Committee of the Trilateral Commission, whereas Chuka Umunna is a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. What we are witnessing are representatives of globalist institutions frequenting both sides of the argument. On one hand they have successfully managed to implant into people’s consciousness that no deal would be disastrous, yet on the other have advocated that those same people should have the choice of engineering said disaster.

In the background as ever are the Bank of England. This week governor Mark Carney addressed the Treasury Select Committee and expressed how the recent rise in the value of sterling ‘would appear to reflect some expectation that the process of resolution would be extended and that the prospect of no-deal may have been diminished‘. Carney was quick to point out, however, that this was not his opinion, rather it was ‘the market’s initial take‘.

With the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos next week, I would expect warnings over a ‘disorderly Brexit‘ to be re-emphasised as the potential for a second referendum gains ground.

Unfortunately, as campaigners hyper focus on securing a remain option for a future vote, they continue to perpetuate the belief that a ‘People’s Vote‘ would kill off any prospect of a ‘hard‘ Brexit. The danger of this misguided logic should now be self evident.

Brexit Ultimatums Fly Freely Betraying Bad Faith

So the EU has given the U.K. a 48 hour ultimatum to come up with an acceptable change to the Irish Backstop. But, the problem is, and Brussels knows this, there is no acceptable change to the Irish Backstop.

There can be no re-implementation of a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and the EU will not accept an open border because then it will negate its entire legal structure as a customs union.

Rock meet hard place, but this isn’t the U.K.’s problem. It is the EU’s. And Theresa May has been avoiding the issue the entire time allowing Brussels to set the terms of the surrender negotiations rather than say, “Ball’s in your court. We’re happy to leave the border open.”

That arrangement is anathema to the other 27 countries in the EU. But, again, that is their problem. And it shouldn’t be Theresa May’s responsibility.

Brussels’ bullying on this is pure theatre. There is a solution but they don’t want to admit it. They don’t want to admit it because they don’t have to… yet.

Why? Because they still believe they can get the British people to stand down and allow Parliament to deliver BRINO (Brexit-in-Name-Only) using the Irish border as the stalking horse.

Because that’s what the majority of Parliament wants. What they don’t want is to be on the hook for it, so they can go back to their voters and claim they fought the good fight.

Blame shifting thy name is politician.

Time is running short for these kinds of games. Bot May and the EU are playing hardball with a British people who are beyond tired of the shenanigans. Leave means Leave and the reality is that many of the important Labour Remainers are in very vulnerable seats if there is a betrayal of Brexit, regardless of how the media and the Twitterati try to spin this.

Because if the public opinion was so in favor of Remain, we wouldn’t be where we are today. There would already have been a second referendum called or Parliament would have voted for Mrs. May’s deal which is the closest thing there could be to BRINO.

The Yvette Coopers and Anna Soubry’s are grandstanding for their paymasters behind the scenes but the backbenchers all know what the political fallout from this will be if they don’t just get on with this business.

And that’s why May hasn’t stepped down as Prime Minister. She knows what the political fallout would be and is trying to stay in power long enough to deliver BRINO or hang her opposition with an unwanted delay.

The Remainers have made their case ad nauseum, ad infinitum and it is time to admit defeat. Gods know Mario Draghi at the ECB just did.

Every day the economic data coming out of the EU gets worse and the data coming out of the U.K. is better than advertised by the Europhiles. That’s why the fear-mongering isn’t working.

People can see through that, they can see the obnoxiousness coming from Brussels and their own government and they simply aren’t buying it.

Another few months of this will only make it worse, not better.

Finance Minister Philip Hammond has now issued his ultimatum, again, out of weakness. Either vote for Mrs. May’s deal (which is what he wants anyway) or face another three to six months of torture.

But it’s people like Hammond who will have to face reality that betraying Brexit will be the real shock. The next general election in the U.K. is 2022 but the EU in its current form may not last that long.

And the British people can sense this as well. What’s so great sticking around in a political union that is sinking into an abyss financially?

The institutions that make up the EU are fraying. Political unity is not a guarantee at this point.

Viktor Orban in Hungary is warning the EU that if they are intent on forcing political integration much further, it will not hold together.

“If we are left alone and they do not force islamisation on us, Europe can continue to live as the club of free nations,” Orban said, but added that if Brussels forces Hungary “to accept the UN migration pact or the European Commission’s decisions so as to make us fit their own Western concessive policies, a breakup [of the EU] cannot be ruled out.”

If the Brexit deal collapses, England will "crash" into being an independent country again. I guess some companies will have to make their own trade deals, etc. HORRORS!

UK Parliament Rejects May's Brexit "Meaningful Vote": 391-242

Update (3:15 pm ET): The vote is in... and May has lost by a 149 vote margin - 391-242.

"I profoundly regret the decision this house has taken tonight"

Here's the wording of the motion the House of Commons will voted on:

“That this house declines to approve leaving the European Union without a Withdrawal Agreement and a framework on the future relationship on March 29, 2019 and notes that leaving without a deal remains the default in U.K. and EU law unless this House and the EU ratify an agreement.”

May then listed a succession of possible choices for the House.
When she asks if it wants a second referendum it elicits a chorus of both YES and NO from different corners of the chamber.

So what happens next?

May says there will, as promised, be a vote tomorrow on a no-deal Brexit and a vote on Thursday on delaying Brexit, which consensus now sees as failing and resulting in a vote to extend the Brexit process, although whether and how that happens remains to be seen.

The UK makes a lot of it's money because London is the EU's financial center. It it's not in the EU any more, especially with a no agreement hard Brexit, that might not work any more.

A lot of the big financial firms are looking to move their offices to Dublin and/or Frankfurt.

Really it's been Germany that's been propping up the EU. The UK was really never that into it (note that it kept it's own currency.) I don't think the UK's leaving would effect the EU much. But I think it will have a huge negative effect on the UK. A lot of jobs are going to shift out of the UK to EU countries.

In point of fact not long before the Brexit vote, there was a referendum in Scotland whether to stay in the UK. They voted to stay, Brexit may change their mind. They voted by 62% to remain in the UK.

I disagree. The UK departing a slowly failing EU only opens the door to the growing nationalist movement in other EU countries to consider doing the same thing. Anything that feeds that movement could help dissolve the EU.
