I bought the Ford Shop Manual for my 2016 Expedition in .pdf format. I am using a brand new install of windows 10 so it defaults to opening in Microsoft Edge.
Which just allows you to scroll up and down.

I was wondering if there is a decent reader that has good searching abilities but also can give me a view like I am looking at a book.

Adobe has the free Acrobat Reader you can download from them, and Firefox has a reader/plugin, same for Chrome.

In Acrobat Reader you select, View, Page Layout then select Facing for a book style layout.

I'm partial to SumatraPDF after having evaluated numerous alternatives. Fast and with an excellent search function among other features. It's free too.

I don't know of anything really good.

I do know Foxit reader sucks, unless you like being constantly prodded to "upgrade" to a nonsense paid version of their shitty pdf reader...

The 2 we primarily use at work.

Ninite.com has an assortment of programs.

I settled on Edge because Adobe Reader keeps updating.

If you don't like Edge, have you tried Kindle reader? Your post reminded me I need to add that as it's one of the programs I had before my Windows reset.

If you use Evernotes, it has a pdf reader as part of the program.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

If you are a student and have access to an .edu address, you can buy Acrobat Pro for cheap (~$100)

I am a fan of Bluebeam Vu. We use the full version (Bluebeam Revu) at work, and it is fantastic. Vu is the free reader, and it is great too, no ads, fast, and stable.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll start with the Firefox plug in and go from there.
Old junk computer so I am trying to keep the bloat down as much as possible.

Watch your [buttocks] on free. Two nasty events recently occurred in oil & gas on “free” software and terms of service (TOS).

One was a free pdf creator that has TOS that they own the data for anything converted. Anything they want to make money off that pdf they can - sell your secret recipe, sell attorney client privilege communication, etc.

That's because Adobe Acrobat Reader, like Adobe Flash, is a cesspool of security vulnerabilities.

Personally, I wouldn't run Flash or Acrobat Reader on my life.
