On top of all the other good suggestions I will add Animas Forks and Lime Creek Road.

Animas Forks is a ghost town past Silverton. The road is rough but doable.

Lime Creek Road will need a vehicle with some ground clearance but it is not a technical 4x4 trail. The southern exit should put you right near Purgtory.

I've only snow skied there, but I've heard Keystone is really nice in the summer.

Stationed in Ft. Carson for about a year. Also have made several vacations trips that passed through Colorado.

Beautiful state. Enjoyable most every place except Denver and Boulder.

In Pagosa Springs be sure to spend a day at the Hot Springs and also intertube down the river.

The Silverton Durango train is pricey but worth the ride. Book only one way bus up and train down otherwise the train gets a bit boring for kids. You can go on a mine tour in Silverton that is fun with kids.

I also recommend going to Mesa Verde, plan an entire day and then know that you will not have time to see it all.

Downtown Durango is fun and has lots of touristy shops and you can easily spend a couple of days there.

They use to have an Alpine slide at Purgatory not sure if they still have it but that is also fun.

Don't miss Rocky Mountain National Park and the elk in downtown Estes Park. Creed and Lake City are really cool to visit and have a lot of history.
