Just a few weeks ago we drove across I-80 in Nevada and hit several areas of road construction and had to slow down to 55. I remember commenting to my wife about how weird it felt to be driving so slow. I couldn't imagine driving that speed across the entire state.

However, when I drive my Jeep Wrangler to work, I always try to keep it between 55-60 MPH. As a result, I can usually squeeze one extra commute on a tank of gas.

We're not short on gas like we were back then, we're just paying too much for it. If you'd like to drive 55mph to save gas, by all means please do so. (But, do it in the slow lane so I can get around you.)

How much additional time would Americans spend on the road if the speed limits were decreased? Is that time free? If not, what is that time worth?

What's that supposed to mean? My point is if law enforcement actually went after people breaking the law, this wouldn't even be up for discussion. Yet I'm used to the control factor? Not really. I just think people should be held accountable for their actions up front so problems like this don't arise.

If the speed limit was set to 55, people might drive 75. Right now, with a posted speed limit of 65-70, people regularly drive 80-90 miles per hour on highways. I was just back home in Wisconsin, who has some of the worst rude drivers, and I was just shocked at how fast and aggressive people drive (and I'm used to LA traffic).

The real problem is the being on a highway where you have people who refuse to drive faster than 55 with people on the road going 100. The 5 freeway through the San Joaquin valley is notorious for this. It makes going around the speed limit dangerous.

The worse problem beyond this is that we'd all be fine with a 70 mile per hour speed limit if the police actually enforced the speed limit in certain parts of the country. In LA, it's regular to see some hopped up BMX driven by a drug dealing gang banger driving 120 through traffic. Maybe instead of spending money on this type of legislation, local law enforcement should spend some money on automatic photo tickets on the highways to actually enforce existing laws.
70mph speed limit, in LA? Everyone does 80-85 anyway. Photo enforced? California has gone to your head. You're getting used to the control factor.

If a certain One wins in November, they'll drop the double nickel on us for sure.

In 1980 the US traffic fatality rate was 3.3 per million miles; in 2003 it was 1.5. After the double nickel was repealed there was no increase in the fatality rate. There was a very small increase in number of deaths, but on a basis of more miles driven.

The double nickel is the most regressive kind of tax imaginable; it taxes us on the one irreplaceable asset we have.

Might this have to do with automobile safety?

I've had to abide by that bullshit 55 mph speed limit down from 70 just once. I was on deferred adjudication so I really didn't have a choice. It was extremely dangerous, I was in the right lane going 55 and the rest of the world would fly around me doing 80-85 coming inches from my bumpers. I could be on that show I Shouldn't Be Alive. Slow drivers create a very dangerous situation even if they are abiding by the law, the entire freeway had to swerve around me and I was causing people to become furious.

That's what I was thinking.

How much does one sign cost? It can't be cheap.

my Harley gets 43-45 mpg when I drive easy on the throttle at 65-70mph, but at 55 it drops to 38-40 mpg. I tried it just last night.

For you or me a 24"x30" speed limit sign would be about $60. A Gov't contract would probably be about $75-$100 @.

I found out last summer when we drove from north of Philthadelphia to Myrtle Beach that, the fast I go the better the gtas mileage. I'm talking 22mpg @ 70mph versus 25mpg @ 80mph.

That's in a 2002 Ford Escape V6 w/Tow Package.

has any auto manufacturer ever come out and made the claim that their car gets more mileage at 55 than at 60, 65 or 70?

my accord seems to max out on mpg at 72 mph, not at 55

so this would make me consider that not only does 55 mph cost more in time, it costs more in fuel, adds nothing to safety and is another problem created rather than a problem solved
